I just finished cleaning a recent find - a Prentiss Bulldog 207 208. The dynamic jaw is marked 207 208, while the fixed one is marked 207 only. You can see how small it is vs. the Coke can. It has 2” jaws, opens 2 ½” and weighs 4 lbs. 7 oz. The PO (or an earlier one) had replaced the original jaws with aluminum ones (glued on).
A little something too go along with your nice find.

I kept having problems finding and keeping this thread, (It's a me problem, not criticism -my brain is found wanting often) found it while looking for REED 104 1/2 info (1912 and 14 patent dates) - just curious, and pressed the watch button.

Anyway spent a bit of time reading the Stanley Victor stuff which is of interest to me, really like my original paint 742 (pre 1915) Thankyou heaps of good info and will continue to reread till I make some sense of them and delve a bit further into this thread.

I've been coming across a few more catalogues, Aussie related - a lot of US/UK vices before local manufacturing took over, overseas vices seemed to become rarer after the 1930's( just my observation-I ain't no expert) and had some little breakthroughs with dating Dawn Vices from the castings. Still a bit of a black hole around 1920-50, but getting there.
Actually this thread just pisses me off, took another half an hour to find it, yes I have it on watch, no I never get notifications for it, no it never shows up when I use the search function, I just wanted to do some research is all. even had the post number to look at .

Yes I'm a pain in the **** so I'm assuming I've been blocked - didn't think I was that much of a fuckwit. but there you go.

To add to what Outlawmws said, if you just check page 1 or 2 of the "General Tool Discussion " section, it is almost always there. It is not the busiest thread, but definitely enough comments to be on page 1 or 2, at worst page 3. Should take all of 1 minute to find it.

This ^ should be the solution.

I have to check my watched threads now and then. For whatever reason I'll stop getting notifications for a thread and I find it with unread messages. It's seems to be random.

Edit: like this one that got left behind Screenshot_20250407_130019_Chrome.jpg

Thankyou, looked everywhere for that earlier, I have to deal with constant head pain and when I start getting frustrated/annoyed the pain increases and I just go downhill rapidly, can't deal with it.

Thankyou, I had looked there, going to have to write all these helpful hints down as I'll forget and get lost again in 2 weeks, not having a short term memory for this stuff is annoying.

Write these hints/tricks down on your computer (Word, Excel, whatever...) and have that "cheat sheet" handy and open at a times.

I live on spreadsheets... Even keep a diary in one.

Nice images from that old Oliver catalog Colmal. I may have to copy the bench in the first pic with the drawers. I have an old oak desk that would be a good start. Just have to replace the current desk top with a wider and maybe thicker top leaving room to mount a vice outside the legs. Ed.

I was hoping someone would like and do that, noticed it has the materials and sizes, I would love to see a finished product with the Oliver branding on it.

I only got the handbook 2 days ago, added it to some other stuff I bought from one seller as the price was good.

That handbook is a really nice find colmal. A lot of useful information to go along with their extensive product line. It would be great to come up with an original Oliver bench but I expect they are few and far between these days.

BONNEY Hercules Vises
An item in the September 3, 1896 issue of The Iron Age was about a line of vises from Bonney which describes them as "All Steel"*.

*The 1914 Bonney catalog page describing the Jewelers Vises of the line said they were "semi-steel castings".

NOTE to KMS: There is already a Bonney 200 in the Vise Spreadsheet but it is definitely not a 2" jewelers' vise. The 1896 Iron Age item lists 22 new unlisted BONNEY models. Have fun!

I just noticed that the Hercules models have Parker type collars and that the 1914 catalog drawings have the Lehigh logo. Parker advertised that they made semi-steel vises too. I wonder... Check out this 1887 Parker No.19 for comparison. 1887 Parker No 19.jpg

FMC: It looks like the Motherland has been converting to Metric in fits and starts for a long time. I could find a 1971 Record catalogue that has sizes in Imperial and Metric but not much before that. They were still doing that by 1991. Take a look at this size chart. With the sole exception of the 5Vs at 156mm jaw opening, all of the metric units of width are in nice increments of 5 i.e. there are no 103mm or 127mm jaws. It appears that the UK has been dragging its feet a bit, but not as much as its recalcitrant former colony.

I only put that remark about Imperial measurement in to act as sort of a time stamp. However, the metric conversion happened much later than I assumed so all it says about the vices in question is that they likely are pre-1971.

A long time ago I had a friend who was much older than I was. He was old enough that he had been married in tsarist Russia. He had some interesting stories but I forgot to ask him about measurements, lol.
