People trashing our public lands...
Hey, this thread's about "pet peeves", not "major flaming hatreds". All the beautiful places I've seen trashed by assorted idiots is rage-inducing, not a peeve. Why are there SO MANY OF THESE PEOPLE?
Here's a pet peeve: claims that something is "waterproof" or "water-resistant". Everything leaks.
I once paid many large American dollars for a pair of Gore-Tex motorcycling boots, with the famed "keeps you dry guarantee". The left one keeps me dry, the right one leaked from the very first bit of rain.
Have you ever spent the day with one dry foot and one wet sock? It's exquisitely peeving. Both wet, I can cope; just part of the adventure. But that one dry sock is a constant reminder you that your very expensive new boot has failed.
So, buoyed by the Gore-Tex promise of a replacement for defective gear, I contacted Gore-Tex. Contact the vendor, they said. I contacted the vendor. He asked me to ship the boots to him (on my dime). Wellll... OK, fair enough. A few weeks later, the vendor claimed that he put the boots in a pan of water and they didn't leak, so obviously I was lying, and he sent the boots back. Notwithstanding his "test", the right boot, just the right boot, continued to leak in the rain. He told me to contact Gore-Tex. I contacted Gore-Tex, and they told me to contact the vendor. This cycle of finger-pointing went around three or four times, with both Gore-Tex and the vendor refusing to honor the guarantee.
So rather than devoting my time, fortune, and very soul to exacting revenge, in this life or the next... I still have the boots. They're pretty good other than the fact that one leaks in the least bit of rain.
Gore-Tex is BS.
