So.......Was it a big event this year ? Always good to get away and get home to a fresh start at work. :bounce:

Valentines is always just a low key event (that's kinda what I like about it ;))
20 years this year, so as a major sponsor, at least I didn't have to do too much :D:D (makes a change :p)

Dunno about a "fresh start" just another day of busting my **** & running in around in circles :eyecrazy::willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

My new school based kid who was due to start today (DIDN'T TURN UP )
I'm sick of unreliable people, or none at all !!
Why can't I find staff :sad::sad::sad::sad:
I would have given my right one to work in a Rod Shop when I was young.

Well I always find after being away I get a fresh perspective on things even if it takes a few days to get back to speed.

Oh how sad and sadly so typical. You know a firm I deal with has been having the same problem and just today had a new worker. A senior Citizen I will add, keen to work and keen to do his best even if he was slow he was cautious not wanting to damage a finished project he was cleaning and I am told he arrived to work on time. I was told all this as I was asked to show him how to do a job he had not done before and I had just called to collect some parts. May be you need to do the same ? Look for some one like that.

MATE!!
Been there............ Done that!!
I have had Old & older try out for work & the young, though I find I can not match the wages that are paid by the mines etc (they tend to "START" at least 3 times the normal wage & just go up from there :scared::scared:)
I also find it's hard to get someone who will move to the country (even though I think they are missing out as I wouldn't live anywhere else ;)) or someone who just has the right attitude (to me, good ethics & a love of cars will get a start, everything will click if they have those 2 things)
Oh! well,
Maybe I'll just retire & take my skills with me :sad::sad:
The "full time" jobs I have had going for nearlly a year, are seperate from the one for a school kid (I usually give a school kid a go for a year, so each year I have a new one...........kind to give them a go with a "first job")
He is a decent lad, so I am a bit disapointed :sad:

Any updates ? A few of us here on the forum have been patiently waiting to see what is happening.

You'll have to wait a little longer (sorry!):sad:
Just been clearing work at the moment (still no staff :dunno:)

Got a couple more out the door last week.
This was one of them the "night" just before it left (Thursday late :willy_nil)
The Zephyr in front of it was supposed to go the week before, but it eventually left the next day :rocker::rocker:

002-16.jpg

I acually "looked" at the Workshop Truck today (I usually just have to walk past it :sad:) I even thought about doing something to it this long weekend, but with plenty on (& a car club turning up on Sunday for a Tour) I spose that won't happen :eyecrazy::eyecrazy:

I am impressed at the amount of work that you are putting into the Shop truck along with being really impressed with the quality of the work.

It's sad that you can't find help. I know that if I lived close to you, I'd probably help you for free just to hang out to see what is next to be done. What you do is a dieing art. The young ones of today would rather sit behind a computer all day long and not have to do any physical labor. Sadle someday the ones like yourself will be no more.

Looking forward to any pics you post and especially of the work truck.

Yeah Sorry ! (this thread seems to be more of some of my work more than just the Shop Truck Build like it is supposed to be :lol_hitti:lol_hitti It's a good thing I don't really post all of my work here, or other wise it would have to be a "What's Happened at Rods & Relics" thread instead :scared::scared: )

****** Me!!
I had a workshop full of people today & nearly everyone past some from of comment or another about the Shop Truck :wtf::wtf: :(

Now,
You have to understand these people are not Rodders, or even Vintage guys.
A group of Drift Car guys from Adelaide have been reaising money for our hospital (the community own the hospital & the Governemnt took away some funding a while ago, so we have had a fight on our hands to keep it open)
Anyway, they made the 2 1/2 hour drive to deliver the money
So when asked if I'd open the shop up for something interesting for the guys to see, when they came, I couldn't say no (even if they drive Jap **** :shocking:)

Anyway, I was amaized at how many hug around the Shop Truck & started to ask questions (gee, I felt very guitly every time I had to say I hadn't done anything to it for a year :():eek:
It's a public holiday here tomorrow & "offcially" I won't be open but maybe I should go into work :wtf::wtf:but do something on the old girl instead :scared::scared:

:headscrat:confused:What all those Ricers through the workshop and no photos ?:needpics:
Remember todays Ricer could be tommorrows new Hot Rodder ;).

Read this on the HAMB
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=705620
as it has a comment about Ricers

I have asked if anyone took pics (I was tooooo busy answering all the questions. many didn't even know a place like mine even existed :headscrat)

If I get a reply with pics, I can post them if you wish, I didn't even get to see how many cars turned up (I believe 76 were due to go on the cruise, but not sure how many cars made the trip?) there is only the one that I know of didn't make the shop tour, as he had to do the return trip asap. So who knows??

You are of course correct, one bloke is apparently aready talking about building rod (but with jap running gear) so I hope I can pursway him better, but at least it's a start
Read the link (Thanks!) very interesting & VERY cool gauges (I love those needles!)

It's ok Rocket. We will be here when you do get around to the Shop Truck! I do have to say I am glad you opened up your doors to the Drifters! I think a lot of different car cultures could learn and enjoy each other's work (and shops!).

Jason,
I tollaly argee

I have always done that for individuals or car clubs.
I've run many a shop tour (after hours I've just done) the more that get to see "the other side" the more they might not just disregard us as been a "stuck up mob"

As I also cater for the Vintage guys, I "hope" I have also managed to close the gap there. Many a Vintage/Resto person hated Rodders as we are known for cutting up "their" type of car, Now they get the fact that we have a go at making anything or can copy something & I get approached now days more by them to do work than I do Rodders :headscrat About 4 or 5 to 1 I reckon :shocking::shocking:

That Restorers - Rodder gap closes more every day with many joint events happening these days and even older Rods appearing Restored in Restorers magazines. Alot of my market is the the same now 50/50.

Rod you may want to edit the quote in post 299 as that appears to have been a spammer and the original post has been removed. (The red X's are the bad links).

That post 299 has now been deleted as you quoted a spammer in that post with bad links. Post numbers have been changed. Post 299 is now as you say ok.

If you recall - You responded to some one about your hoist. These spammers make about 6 posts in random topics with bad links and then get deleted.

Yeah, I do seem to recall something about the hoist (who knows :headscrat)
if asked a question, I just answer honestly thinking it is genuine :wtf:

Well,
The Ricers that visited.................
I got a phone call today from one of them (he's doing yr 12) & was wondering if he could come & do 2 weeks work experience. We will see if we can make it work for him.
On another note:
Today (after MUCH PRESSURE from the Education Department & others) I have agreed to teach Auto at the local school one day a week. I'm not real happy being presured into it, but it's for the kids that count. We have such a lack of kids in all of our trades these days, hence why I always open the shop for car club or anyone who is interested. I have always run a class for the yr 10's each year & also out of town schools, but as the Government spend nearly 3/4 of a million Dollars on the tin shed with a hoist, the trouble is...... they didn't think........ who was going to teach it :headscrat:headscrat
Anyway, just like I need more on my plate, I'll make it work some how (I just found out I have "another mad dash" to Adlaide for the new 90 day rego scheme :wtf::wtf:)
So no shop truck yet!! but I have at least started my new chassis jig today (35-40 Ford) something I've been needing for a while as we build a few of them, especially pickups through to '41.
if someone can find me a full running rolling F250/350 with a V8 diesel, that would be great!! CHEAP!!

:thumbup:Good for you with the teaching and for taking on the young fellow for work experience .

As for the F250 / F350 I will keep my eyes out for you but the Brazilian made version we had here in Australia did not last long on the market so surely that tells you something :wtf:. Also told they are not easy to get parts for now and I recall the steering box had issues.

How do I convince you to think earlier Aussie Chassis and Cummins Diesel :headscrat:confused: as I did. 1970's era F Series used so many Aussie Falcon parts as well that you just have to think part no's and interchange parts. So many older Aussie F Series still running round tells you they have been built to last even if some of them now have LPG conversions on the big V8's or Chevrolet :spit: Diesels swapped in.

The Builder Carpenter I have do some work for me even had a loan truck for some time, early 60's F100 with an Isuzu and he said it drove just as good as his old Dodge.

Is this a homemade lift under the truck? How is it run?Looks cool.Looks like a fun project, lotta work, gotta have a lot of heart to take on something like that and work 7 days a week

That is what was posted by the scammer except the deleted bad links have been removed.
the only way you know it is a scammer is they post multiple replies with the same weird links.

Rocket....I never noticed until this morning, the lift the car is on. Is that a fairly common style of lift in Australia or is it more along the lines of something that has been altered quite a bit. I do see where the rails on each side drop into the floor. I assume they are flush with the concrete when lowered all the way? I also noticed jack stands under it in the front. Is that so it will remain stable or is it the case where you just let the pressure off of the hoist?

Kevin,
We refer these hoists as "widow maker" hoists in Oz as they will drop without notice (they have been around for years!)
I use the axle stands under each end to take the weight, as the single cylinder ram (air over hydraulic) is just that....... not reliable! The hoist (not used much these days) while would have been great in it's day (it has quite a few handy attachments that fit the rails to carry diffs, front ends etc) is just plain dangerous :scared:
I only use it to get a car to a reasonable working height (with the use of axle stands for safety) so as I'm no bending down working on sills etc.
1 extra foot in height makes a huge difference :willy_nil

A few years ago, I had the same hoist with a small vintage truck on it, drop 1 foot in one go without warning. It scared the u know what out of me (as I was under it working at the time) I will NEVER trust it at all. I ended up popping stays there to take the wieght just in case it happened again, hence I d not make a habbit of using it.:sad:

Been a little busy today:
Threw together a jig for acurate '35-'40 chassis (well, to fix them really!)
It's not finished yet, but at least when done, I will have something I can pop a chassis in & make sure it is dimensionally correct & square (unlike the way this chassis was before I started :eyecrazy::eyecrazy:)

002-17.jpg

Once all the extra bracing is in, I could even sepperate the X-member & all the crossmembers, repair the rails if required & then box & add new crossmemebers & it would still suit an original body. No Shop Truck work, but it still gets one more job done & hopefully a bit of help to any others that arrive in the future :D

This would make someone happy if I bought it for the running gear

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1-OW...rs_Trucks&hash=item48466f8e6a#ht_47929wt_1282

You can do better than that. Mine is a newer engine than that model.

Very cool, What swap meets do you go to? I always wanted to cut down a COE Pete and make a mini pete!

This site may give you some ideas > http://www.lilbigrig.com/ yes I know I said ideas as they are not COE.

No Joke! (yours is brand new!) but doesn't it have all the electrics too?
I'd be happy to go for basic stuff, easy to work on (besides, I'm not loaded like you, so 2nd hand it the only way it'll happen)

Well you (should) know the story, Cummins made me an offer on a newer 2008 Engine that I could not refuse. Mine is non electronic and just the plain simple Cummins not like the newer engines in the Dodge Ram.

Loaded  Loaded  :scared: Oh I am loaded but not in the way you think. Loaded with headaches from suppliers that fail to do things the right way just as you are loaded by not being able to find good staff.

In fact another Hot Rodder I know has just gone west for work (Mining) and asked me if I would go to.

Ar yeah! I forgot the trouble you had with the first one
I know what you mean. One of the reasons I can't get staff is the wages they expect (compared to the mines that will end a lot sooner than people think)
i ran another Metal Shaping workshop on the weekend & everyone of the blokes whould be happy to work with me (BUT!) they live over the border :eyecrazy:

How about an update on that project even if it is just a photo as it is now ? Give a few of us some inspiration.
Well, I spose I have done something (if only a little :dunno:)
I had a work experience kid down from Adelaide & he wanted to work every day I was around, so on one Sunday we did another door bottom repair.
No pic (they just look tha same as the others anyway :willy_nil)

I might find a decent employee there one day :headscrat
but I'm not expecting one out of the current bunch though :eyecrazy:
Been real busy running Metal Shaping Workshops too :scared: (one last Saturday) & another in a months time :eyecrazy::eyecrazy:
