Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: maybe a good pair of gloves might be on the list to buy instead of the heated handles? looks like the kids had fun and i bet there Dad was smiling while dragging them around.

does snow usually stick around for months in your area once it shows up? we might have had a couple days of snow on the ground last year and i think the most we've had is maybe 2 weeks for the snow to stick around. since our temperature usually rises above freezing in the daytime we get a nice coat of ice on the road under the snow or black ice which is worse so driving is pretty tough for most of the people around here when we do get the white stuff.

personally i like the snow and if the people that don't know how to drive in it would stay home i'd get around nicely.

cheers and best of luck getting the electrical hooked up. also ask more questions if you need to on the sheet rock (drywall) fix. you might also want to put a couple cross members in to give the piece you are replacing some more support.

......................Took time today to get the home made Tobogan down from summer storage and pulled the kids around for 30 minutes......

Thanks for sharing the white stuff. I didn't get a chance to do much but work yesterday, but one of the items on today's agenda is some tractor sledding. The kids love it, and I'm betting yours had a great time.:rocker:

Gonna take me appx 3 hours to unbolt for the front fenders!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: i'm not sure i've seen a coil of copper for a ground before. is that code or did you get that idea from a good electrician?

when i read you had an outlet hooked up i didn't read close enough that the new panel wasn't hooked to the main box yet. good luck and stay safe. also with the little guys hanging around teach them about the negatives about electricity. my little girl thought a pair of metal tweezers fit perfectly in an outlet and boy did she get a surprise. luckily it only melted the tweezers and destroyed the outlet that was easy to replace. she was about 5 at the time.

is there still snow on the ground?

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives snow is pretty well gone have small amount from roof slide off that is in the shade!

The ground coil is cause next summer I'm reduing the trench to add in the wood boiler lines and I may move this whole panel to other side of window to make room for boiler lines?
I don't know yet but if I leave extra length on the ground line I'll have plenty if/when I have to relocate the panel

Drives to clarify, the ground wire that is coiled runs out side to my ground rods the coil is just the extra wire that I left in case I decide to move this panel.

Same for having the extra mhf wire looped above the panel.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Since there is now power in the garage!
Huge item off before winter checklist!

It's back to the awing for the atv workshop!

Got the lower 4x4 cut to length and rough placed they will just float on top off the landscape blocks! If my landscape blocks don't shift much in the spring then maybe I'll anchor down the 4x4s

Got the upper 2x4 s attached to the side of shop!

Ran out of daylight after this!

Sub: I'm not sure how you are going to make that awning work, but looking forward to seeing it up there. take plenty of pictures or maybe have your wife take a few. also make sure you have plenty of support so it doesn't fall on you until you get it secure.

good luck and congrats on getting electricity into your garage.

Re: Yea Old Garage

I'm happy for you that you now have power in the shop. You've come a long way sub.

And drives story about the tweezers is the same one I have. Our youngest (about 5 at the time) stuck a pair into a light socket. Than God it just popped the breaker and did not kill her.

And keep all the snow right there. We had enough last winter. So far no snow here, but it was 16* here this morning.

Thanks for stopping by Strouty!

DLC and 1/2 having power is so very nice! Though all I have right now is 1 outlet but that's way better than having none!

Got the car started today and moved to its winter spot in the garage but before that I set up for a quick pic!

Truck is also lurking in the background

Drives back in 2000 first summer I had the car it was the daily driver!
Unless I was short on gas money then I had to take the bike to work which was a 20 mile country drive!
I had to take the bike like 5 days that first summer!

This last summer I ran 1 tank of gas through the car!
It now has a leaking heater core that needs fixed!
The carb needs the choke reset as its a bear to start after it has sat for more than a day!
I get garage insulated and inside finished off then car is moving up on the projects list!

Also kids are now old enough can just ride in booster seats which are a lot more muscle car friendly than baby seats!

Ps thanks for the nice words about the garage!
After all the grief I give you, It really means a lot!

Re: Yea Old Garage

As with most on her you have a goal!
To get that goal done its seems like you need to due 5 other things to get that goal done?

My goal is to get the ceiling of garage insulated!
Have electricity to garage now! Big check of list as now I can work after dark with work lights if I want! Plus put a fan on my wood stove to disperse some heat around, once wood stove is hooked back up!

Next goal is to get insulation!
Ordered insulation batts i wanted for ceiling! Need to go pick them up!
Need to use 78 ford truck to haul insulation batts home!
Truck has load of wood on!
Unload wood from truck!
Wood is for garage wood stove!
Wood stove needs to be in place before unloading wood!
Pull wood stove in place unload wood from truck!
Car was parked where wood stove goes!
Get car started and moved! Not easy when choke is unhooked!

Snow is 99% gone right now and nothing in the forecast this week so far!

Still have my snow plow blade on the backup atv!
Primary atv is in the repair bay for fixing the heated grips when I get time!

Soon as I take the blade off the atv it will probaly snow!

Some times it seems all I due is move stuff from her to there but then I look back at this thread and I realize there is actual progress going on!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives thanks,
On page 4 post 80 is a pic of my little little brother and the kids and the atvs

I had 2 brothers but one passed away in 2003 due to leukiema when he was 24 years old,
A lot of the tools I use was my brothers he was a real good carpenter by trade!
Every time I use them I think about him! Also the honda atv with fancy rims was his!

Any way me and the little little brother get along great! 8 years younger then me!
He lives in phoniex so when we get time together we try to make the most of it!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub, it's a sad story about your brother. I was best man at my brother's wedding, and he at mine. We talk every day, and our kids play together often. He's 11 years younger.

I don't envy your work load at all. That shop of yours is getting a whole new lease on life :). Can't go wrong with insulation.

Wow, just read threw your entire thread, I love what you have done and how you went about it on a shoe string budget, it made for an interesting read and thanks for sharing. This should be a inspiration to anyone starting out on a budget, What a transformation! The look of your garage sort of resembles a cabin out in the woods, very cool

Thanks Bears fan!

Had a free pass to the house on the rock today!
https://www.thehouseontherock.com
So took the kids, which shot my work time for the most part,
Still got some work in on my atv tracing out why my heated grips not working!

So far I snap off 3 bolts getting front fenders and rack off!
So looking forward to having to drill them out now!

But I think I found where my bad spot is just need to test it out

Pic of atv minus front fenders!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: while i'm looking at the before and after pictures and the amazing transformation i thought i'd offer some advice on how to keep ants out of your garage. we've been fighting moisture ants almost all year inside my house so we've found boric acid is their death. Terro traps you can buy at Home Depot are easy and a bit expensive. Diatomaceous Earth comes in a powder form and you can just put around the outside of the foundation and inside too and pet and kid safe. not saying you have or will have ants or other critters in your garage, but with all that old wood, sawdust and firewood you have i'm just guessing ants might thrive if they find you.

also if you have a stump not far from the garage or house that you know has ants or termites in it burn it or get rid of it because once their family grows and they look for more food sources your stuff will be high on their list.

did you also know potato bugs eat wood? don't ask me how i know all this, but storing wood to keep it at the ready isn't an easy job.

this post is making me hungry. Soup or ice cream. soup is homemade so a no brainer and i've had enough ZZB's for the weekend.

cheers

Sub, I also wanted to add that you have done a great job. And in a short time to boot. It shows what can be done on a shoestring budget. And all the time you worked, you also found plenty of time to spend with your kids. Cudos to you my friend.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Got some insulation put up in the ceiling the area above the car is done so now I can work on the rest and won't have to hassle around moving the charger in and out which is a good thing the old 440 is a bear to start when cold!

This is just the rough in look it's gonna have layer of 1" stryofoam bead board underneath you can see my 20" starter strip on the right as to how it will look when done I hope I just wanted to get this up and over the car so now I can work on the rest and finish fit it as I go!

Or that is the plan!

Sub: i bet with insulation the garage retains more heat now from your little heaters? did you see the fancy mouse trap thread in Free Parking? 1st post had 4 dead mice in the picture drowned so guessing it works.

hope all is well and is brother still around and is he helping with something in the garage or just having fun riding around with you on the ATV's?

cheers
