Haven't gotten back to the drill press yet....but at least got the oil change done in the wife's XC60



Still have mixed feelings on remote oil filters with replaceable filter media inside vs the old school screw on metal ones..."remote located" is marketing speak for "PITA to get to". The oil change isn't bad...resetting that stupid Maintenance Interval reminder inside without a better scanner is a pain and took 20 minutes and 3 YouTube videos till I held my mouth just right and it cleared out

Then I had intended to go back to drill press....however daylight savings time screwed up my kids nap schedules(apologies out there to the other parents of mini-humans as well struggling today) and afternoon nap time didn't really happen. So instead we headed to the park, to drop off 6 gal of oil at O'Reilly's and then to chase bubbles in the yard after refilling all the wands.

Regarding remote oil filters, that reminds me of the ones that used toilet paper rolls and didn’t require you to change the oil too. Frantz oil filter system comes to mind as I used to own an early demo model setup with each auto model’s adaptor.

I like the Subaru where the oil filter is still a metal canister but is upside down on the top of the motor. Easy to change and not have to deal with the oil running down my arm.

Thanks...I was introduced to it with the Prusa and thought it was super slick, this might be the first time I've actually incorporated it into one of my models.

For clarity, the red zip ties shown in the image is fed thru a cavity in the print. This is done by a revolved cut so you only have to sketch a rectangle or whatever cross sectional shape you want:



Then revolve it around the axis, leaving this as the section:



And voila...built in cable mangt tie off points!. For this I drew the top one, then as the exact location wasn't important, just patterned it 2x more times. I ultimately only used the bottom and top.

And hint....make sure you've either got support turned off or support blockers in those locations...otherwise you get to pick out support material....wink

Looks great! The speed pickup mount is really good! I have an old grey Powermatic 2300 that has a Reeves drive. I did a vfd as a phase converter only. It it a great machine. You're going to have a very flexible and capable machine!

Thanks! Very excited to get this one wrapped up. Talking with my brother the other day he mentioned one he used in a neighboring shop that had a tapping mode which flipped it to super slow mode and activated momentary buttons on each of the downfeed handle spokes which reversed the feed...which got my head turning. Then I remembered the number of times so far that I could've really benefited from that and put it into the back of my head. Though if I did that....I think I'd move the reverser switch to a footpedal for simplicity.

Drill Looks good! And yea Murphy law states the harness will show up after you have made a new one. It has happened to me several times on the camaro.

I'm actually surprised it hasn't turned up yet....lol. At least it was a common harness, the socket was your standard 4 pin computer fan header which according to some googling is apparently called a JST socket and has a 2.54 mm pitch. I bought this kit as I figured it would come in handy on other things eventually:

Work has stolen most of my time this past week, but few minor things...

Saturday night had us actually out of the house with a babysitter to catch this guy's show in town:



If you don't know who it is and you have kids in the house and under the age of say 15...especially under the age of 10....look up "Dude Dad" on any social media channel...he's on all of them. If you don't have kids or they're out of the house...you probably won't enjoy as much as much of his stuff is life with mini humans. If you like his stuff....we really enjoyed the show, would recommend it

And while I and the male half of the couple we were out with got drinks...the wifes each got us the same shirt as well...for fathers day....so we each now have 2...we thought it was hilarious...the ladies were less impressed we ruined their grand father's day gift plans

Did get a bit of time back into the garage over nap time today and started to button up the drill press project. Still have some wire mangt and loose ends to finish up...but it's very functional now so that's a big step!



It also adds to the list a new top/table for it....so probably something like this gets made soon:



In place of T-Track it'll probably just be the Matchfit type dovetail grooves as I already own that tooling and clamps. router table style back fence that can be easily adjusted

But now that I've got a drill press with variable speed ranging from Roadrunner on speed to tortoise in January....anyone have a favorite spindle speed chart/rotating or sliding calculator etc to mount on the machine?

Bonus points if it's cool/vintage looking etc...and doesn't have to be free...if it's a poster or nice print etc I will pay. Ideally hoping for a couple material types (wood/soft metal/steel etc) and then spindle speeds for common diameters. I could open the app on the phone...but the ease of something right there that covers 80 or 90% of what I'm doing (a couple holes only) is what I'm hoping to find...while looking cool-ish

Right now something along the lines of this is floating in the drawer there somewhere....so not hard to look better...but this is effective

That sounds equally fun and insane....you sir are brave! I bet the kids had a blast and slept good though at night with 7 of them running around! Longest road trip we've done so far with both kids is 5 hours or so, some neighbors went down to Golf Shores, Alabama last week on spring break and on the return decided more thought would go into that 1k mile road trip before doing it again.

As I'm wrapping up the drill press project and getting closer on the dust collector, went ahead and ordered the components for the sander vfd conversion this AM. Source is https://www.factorymation.com/?lang=en_US

Will have buttons for start/stop, a switch to flip direction and also speed adjustment in a remote box somewhere easy to get to...probably above the disc sander. Will also put a rotary disconnect in so that I can kill power to the VFD without unplugging. The hope is to mount the VFD inside the base in an box, then have the push buttons and disconnect handy...will see how that goes once the parts show up and I figure out where there is space

Going to try and make progress over the next week, I'm on a bit of a "staycation" using up carryover vacation so hoping to have significant house/garage/landscape time....see if that works out. There is also some vehicle service that needs looked at, including coolant change in both vehicles and a serpentine belt along with some other "while I'm there stuff" on the Volvo that will consume an entire day that I may try and tackle next week as well.

We drove from Detroit to Boston or Cape Cod every summer for 17 years. 13 hours with 2 munchkins. My daughter was just 4 months old her first time. We had some interesting experiences. Some trips were easy. Others required industrial levels of patience.

We did that for 7 years of her life until last year we went to other places that were long driving trips. Each trip has been pleasant and overall drama free. She asked me a month ago when we were going somewhere again! I got lucky in the traveling partner department so far.

Growing up we would do a couple trips a year from Detroit to the farm in Kansas before we moved there when I was in 4th grade. 900 miles of which the worst was Iowa. If you've never driven I-80 across Iowa...here you go:

Now I honestly prefer Iowa and I-80 to that boring *** stretch of road called I-88 between Davenport and Aurora/Chicago's western burbs. It's only 2 hours but dang is it boring and bland

The first year of our daughters life we flew a lot, between work travel and a promotion on Southwest I got Companion Pass so my wife flew free and the daughter was lap child so free as well. And when you can fly out of Midway in Chicago, you can get to most places direct so we did a number of trips to Vegas for her family, Florida long weekends and some other places...probably didn't utilize that enough.

First plane trip with both kids was last fall to Vegas....went really well so we've talked about what else we may do/go this summer but with some ongoing medical challenges in the extended family I don't know if we'll be comfortable/able to go too far. Time will tell.

But that price put me off. For 10 minutes of modeling and a couple dollars in filament and a few threaded inserts I can have it printed. Would I want it printed in a higher usage location...no...plus the lack of UL rating could cause issues with some insurance providers in com'l settings. But for my home garage I'm comfortable with printing the enclosure

Well right on time, I'm trying to be productive and a kid gets sick. In good news....her car seat needed a wash anyway? Oh well, it was at least close to home when it happened...hopefully we can limit it to 1 kid

During nap I volunteered for the Target run, which means big orange box gets stopped at to since it's next door. Then I was forced to drive 6 or 7 miles to go check out some stuff for sale on marketplace....ya'll know where this is going:



Went for the #7 jointer and the chisels(metric widths but that's ok)...ended up buying the Honing Guide and the somewhat rusted tenoning jig while there. He tossed in the stones as well. Jointer has a bit of surface rust but should clean up well. Chisels have had some work to flatten the backs but could use some more. So that may be a night time project when I'm not feeling up to something more more involved. Tenoning jig is going to take more clean up...but I've been watching for one like it and the last several Delta's like that sold for $80 to $100 and I gave $20

Got a shipping notification from FedEx the box of components from FactoryMation shows up on Monday. Shipping from Georgia and ordered Friday morning, ready for pickup email around noon and on my door on Monday with FedEx ground shipping....0 complaints with that. Guess that means I need to get version 1 of a switch box modeled up to see what I think!

I’ve really only used it for tenoning, but it sure works well!

No idea why it did this...previously successful PLA, it is a new beta version of the slicer...but either way it doesn't matter as its a test box for the sander vfd controls to get and idea of how big and where it could go. First up...see what I think of the ugliest print in awhile for playing with control locations:



So thinking the 4 button(well 2 button, 1 switch, 1 speed control) will go there, tab off the box onto that socket head screw and it could rotate for either belt or disc usage but think could position it at an angle where either can use it acceptable. I don't like that it requires reaching over the disc to do it...so probably going to print something hopefully less ugly overnight and look at it more tomorrow

Disconnect probably going here(below disc side) where a prior start/stop switch was...hole likely gets cut bigger, then gets a 3d printed box and cover plate. Keeps the run of the bigger wire shorter....would prefer the disconnect and control buttons to be closer....still pondering that







Biggest question is VFD home. I want it inside the cabinet, I don't need a wart on the side to be a shin killer and source of investigation for the kids

There is an existing cover plate that is on the and looks like with the help of a cutoff tool there is sufficient depth...but it's close. The VFD is approx 5" tall/wide x 6" deep



Back of the machine, under the motor is where I'm leaning right now:



Again requires some metal cutting...but it'll get protected from dust in a 3d printed box with a clear front cover and this location has more space to make it work.

The more I think about it....the more I'm leaning towards not hanging the controls "out in space" above the disc and putting in (2) separate sets. Full controls cut into the base, under the disc not far from the disconnect, then another start/stop only set off the belt sander side. Keeps hands out of the line of fire and the extra work for the second remote set of controls isn't that hard or costly

Beta version, is this Orcaslicer for your Bambu machine? PLA you say too? Surprising because it does appear to be a wet filament issue, but that never happens. Could be heat creep but it looks like it was having issues from the start.

Yes to Orca...figured if it got your stamp of approval it was good enough to try! Installed the 2.0 Beta though I see now a new release is out so will probably try that. Was most interested in this update as this is something I'm frequently annoyed with:



I also immediately went to wet material and went so far as to pull the roll out to confirm it was PLA and I didn't mislabel it in the software....it was PLA and has been in the AMS with desiccant holders since it was opened....so I'm kinda in the same camp as a plug, heat related issue or some sort of extruder related defect that carried thru the print once it got started...though it was still a success in that it let me visualize the concept and iterate faster!

It's running a different print now with PETG and appears to be working as expected....so

Orcaslicer is incredible, and the 2.0 beta added so many awesome new features including the great one you shared. I'm currently knee deep in my largest 3D printing production ever, sitting at a total of 5,100 parts so far of an estimated 40,000 total parts. I dialed in my filament profile as well as print settings with extreme precision thanks to the detailed features on Orcaslicer. Not a single failed part out of 5,100 blows my mind!

I just went through the same process tuning in a config in Bambu Studio for a friend's product he prints on his own Bambu machines. He's not "ready" for Orcaslicer so I had to use Bambu Studio and it was pretty disappointing how stripped down it is compared to Orca. I still got good results, but I know I could get it better if he was willing to use Orcaslicer.

Dang...congrats on that job sir! Well hope it's congrats....the most "memorable" projects for me for work are often those that are memorable for the wrong reasons so hopefully it's going similar or better than anticipated!

And yeah....as I was bouncing between PrusaSlicer, SuperSlicer, Bambu, Orca....damn there is a lot of settings and started to pay more attention at how many more there are in Orca than Bambu. On that "I should do it list" is just committing to a single brand of filament and tuning in a couple profiles really well....maybe soon-ish?

I was getting a bit irritated with it, then read a bit farther and found the problem

Panel Setting 2 was "Default motor setting"....and showed the default for single phase input was 50 hz...ok perfect....I can change that easily.....or not. After half a dozen attempts at trying to change it and hitting different buttons for it to try and hold the desired 60 hz value....I read on

Sure enough...I needed to adjust settings like 9, 13 and something else as well, and before I adjusted the start up default. Cause the Motor Max Hz being set at 50 will prevent your default startup of 50 from changing to something higher...in the end the documentation is better then some I've seen and it's actually fairly decent English and not some other English version translated by a non-native speaker. Just annoying that setting min and max motor Hz isn't before the default...but oh well.

Between a couple other outings, sunk some 1/4-20 inserts into a piece for the dust separator:



Was curious if the M12 cordless soldering iron would do it...answer was yes. Largest inserts I've done with it so far....really need to finish my heat set insert arm...

After liberally slathering the mating cone with silicone it got installed




And then I found out I was out of 1/4-20 bolts of sufficient length....so the next piece isn't yet bolted on....

Broke out the tracksaw and first use of the Stealthmount quick square device thingy....tape measure had it a bit out...but for breaking down sheet goods to rough sizes or where +/- 1/8" is acceptable....seems fast and easy:



Sacrificial piece was the top off the former miter saw station...2 layers of 3/4 melamine with a sapele edgeband

So left to do to make the cyclone functional is:

• Connection between top of separator and impeller/blower housing
• Lid and connection hose to the chip container(aka former shop vac canister)
• Exhaust plenum into the filter assy

After that it'll be

• PVC duct work(main trunk to be 6" and already have at least the first several elements)
• Wireless relay to trigger the VFD to start/stop it

Few steps forward

adapter to go from the cone of the cyclone to 6" flex hose printed. need to cut back the bottom of the cone to get a tight fit. Plan is to just attach with silicone but if necessary will add rivets





Next up is the mounting flange for the other end on the shop vac lid


Got the wireless start/stop working. $14 dollar, 4 channel wireless relay from Amazon. It's not how I thought it would need to be wired to work, but it is working and only took up 1 channel instead of 2.



There is currently a separate relay/remote killing power to the vfd. Plan is to rework that so it can run off this same remote. Have also thought and may still just make that "power to vfd" relay be energized when the lights in the garage are on, that switch is already a smart switch so making that happen would be pretty easy.
