Mulch kit for the mower was installed....definitely happy. This was a couple hours after mowing on Saturday, 0 evidence of any discharge windrows

yard1.jpg

This isn't even with mulching blades...factory recommendation is to use the standard blades with the mulch kit which made me skeptical but not complaining with this at all. It'll be bit less tolerant of damp grass, but I can live with that

Local custom sawmill/sawyer had an open house, I'd never been to his place but follow on the socials so was an excuse to get out. Plus the wife always likes making new connections for local people for when she has custom furniture needs for a client project

Awesome piece of ash with some pretty cool spalting patterns in it....it managed to stay there....helped by the fact we were in my mother in law's Palisade and not my truck. It might become part of a wall mounted wide/shallow cabinet under a flatscreen TV

We are fine, mostly. Especially compared to people close by. My old man lives three miles East of me, and my brother a mile East of him. Their farm places were unscathed, but these pictures are from a neighbors place between them and one mile North.

We didn’t have any pivots go down, but my brother can look out his back window at the neighbors pivot that laid down two different directions. It was just a T&L though, so no big loss!

IMG_8158.jpeg

This is a screen shot from a low res video my sister in law took out of their back window. That’s where the T&L went down.

We did have three and a half quarters of corn planted, and they might all need replanted.

As much destruction as tornados bring, it's something fascinating on what happens in a storm. some of the odd ways things get relocated and sometimes looks like a crane just set it gently up high.

One of my family's farms in Alabama got hit with a tornado. My great Grandma's old house got hit and the way the back section got ripped off, roof peeled back, and walls just destroyed from flying debris, yet the kitchen was mostly untouched and some of the plates and pictures on the wall was still in their place like nothing happened but the laundry room next to it was gone. So bizarre to think, that your fate can be determined by just picking the right room to ride the storm out.

I've seen tons of bizarre things growing up in NE. Neighbors got hit one Summer and it left the dirt/flowers from the pots in place like nothing had happened, but the clay pots were gone 🤷‍♂️

reminds me of the Ripley's believe it or not exhibit in Dallas. An egg went though a brick wall during a tornado storm and they had it on display. The hole looked like a large caliber gun shell shot it but instead it was just an egg.

Martin

Glad to hear you guys escaped unscathed. I must admit that I've never seen a stock tank in that position...that's impressive!

And I laughed at the T&L comment....in our area it's either Valley or Reinke with the rare T&L and I think the odds are about 9 or 10 to 1 that if one's laid over in a windstorm it's a Reinke. We've lost a couple sections/towers in 1 Valley pivot once....several neighbors seems to loose half their Reinke units about every 3rd year but keep buying them

Logan,
Fremont appears to have been on the edge of that Storm on Friday, we just got a ton of rain.

Hopefully it stays like that and you avoid any more potential storms popping up this week! Right now just looks like a lot more chances for rain

Yard is looking good!

Thanks! Problem now is going to be getting it mowed. Tried to sneak it in yesterday afternoon between calls....I got half the front yard yesterday before the rain started....by the time I got to the fence line I might have been wet enough for a shower. Gave one of the neighbors a good chuckle as he drove by. Tomorrow is supposed to be better

In slow garage progress...

Dust collector is slowly progressing...couple more parts to print and then need a couple uninterrupted hours to make the place more of a mess

It's currently a crowded mess as things had to condense to the single stall to allow 2 SUV's in due to elevated hail risk yesterday...the storms went north and south of the area though but did produce some significant hail....so better to be prepared I guess?

may day 3.jpg

Decision was made on the laser...it got scrapped:

may day 1.jpg

Salvaged parts:

may day 2.jpg

Laser element(long black rectangle), computer controller, Z axis screws, x/y motion carriage etc. Will be putting most of them on ebay to see what I can get out of them.

Little cabinet butchery/repurposing, this was built 15 years go in the basement of the rental house before I bought my first place.... Never envisioned it would still be around!

This is getting the bottom row of drawers cut out, then the top 2 rows going under the cnc router, actually where the metal back panel from the scrapped laser is leaning. The original laser with fume extractor then goes where this was.... Or that's the plan

20240504_133908.jpg

Ripping some plywood for new carcass/case supports to hold the sides together

20240504_135500.jpg

Some glue and screws

20240504_142010.jpg

And that's where it stopped... Nap time is too short... Hopefully more later.

In other stuff, insurance adjuster was by to start the process thanks to the hail storm. It's not done and the claim is over $50k so that's going to take some attention over the coming months. Full roof replacement, gutters and downspouts will be hired out. Also have garage door damage, some window damage, and some significant refinishing to a deck and 300' of cedar fence.... So yay.

Yikes...that's a hell of a claim! We had some hail last night and 80/100 of rain, but nothing to make a claim about.

I was pretty nervous as I've heard horror stories with adjusters fighting etc, but I'm insured with Farm Bureau and had a hail/wind claim on our Iowa house they treated me fairly and without a bunch of B.S. on so I was hopeful the same thing would happen here. Adjuster was a very reasonable guy, out of the KC area to help with claims. We talked about windows for a bit and what can/can't be replaced, he climbed up the ladder and took a gaze across the lower roof portion and hollered back down "I'll have to climb the rest for pictures...but I've got all I need to total it out right here". He and the contractor who'll likely have the job talked about what needs to happen to replace the metal flashing and how they'll need to pull the 1st layer of siding etc to get the new flashing back on correctly and what repairs/repaint will be needed to do that.

3/4" here from that storm....seemed like 2x that based on the lightening! You make it over to the swap meet at Douglas County Fairgrounds? As my parents got rained out of the field they made the journey, didn't hear if they came home with anything substantial or not.

That's a big claim, start looking for the next insurance company now sadly, I suspect when you get your renewal it'll be less than ideal.

Yeah...that has crossed my mind and I know who I'll talk with if they opt to not renew. The renewal is actually in June...so hoping that it's too early for them to have made any significant decisions and I get at least another year. I debated waiting on the claim until after that renewal was done but didn't want to delay the process that long. We'll likely be upgrading to Class 4 impact resistant shingles, so hoping that will help our standing and lessen the inevitable rate increase

Taken from the county road, so kind of hard to see, but here is that T&L South of my brothers house. They had a tub down at the end to drain the liquid electrons out.

IMG_0495.jpeg

If it's like around us, it'll get drug to an out of the way field corner/waterway/wide ditch to "ferment" for a year or 10... Over the winter we filled 8 or 9 semi trailers of scrap metal....you can tell there is less old iron laying around but the activity stopped due to running out of time....not cause we ran out of metal!

So garage door/opener question for the hive mind:

Part of the hail damage claim is garage doors, and as I was thinking about that I'm strongly leaning towards putting a jackshaft/side mount opener on the single door. It's a 7' tall door(double door is an 8') so the opener is lower, and that chain drive is right in the middle of the work area with less then 8' headroom. As there is no torsion spring, it wasn't really an easy option with the existing setup...but if it's a new door...that's a different story

The space in question:

door 1.jpg

Side view...opener would go right there in front of that bike tire, electricity already available right above:

door 2.jpg

The dealer that quoted it carries both Genie and Liftmaster and said over the last 3 or so years, they have far fewer issues with the Genie(it pained him to say it as he likes Liftmaster better), so they quoted this opener:

Any reason to not do this or potential issues I'm not thinking thru here?

I don't know anything about the unit in question but devils advocate.....

I have had 5 Liftmaster 8500W's running for 5 years. Not one single issue other than 2 dead backup batteries but they are cheap on Amazon. I'm a fan and would use them again in a heartbeat.

1000007514.jpg

Liftmaster is real proud of their (likely rebranded) batteries and wants like $80 each for them. When they die, I throw these in.

I was surprised as well by recommending the Genie over Liftmaster. The 8500 was their go to, however over last 5 or so years it's done better at keeping the service team busy and the Genie has been pretty bulletproof. They still sell the Liftmaster, just having better success with the Genie

In good news....it's strep and is easy to treat
Just had the flu go through us all, one at a time. Took over two weeks. Thankfully no stomach issues with anyone.

That's rough...been there....though this is the only time we've had this that it hit all of us at roughly the same time. One after the other is definitely more common in this house, and it normally skips 1 person....but it's rarely the same one.

When I did my garage doors, I really wanted the sidewinder. Two of three salespeople I got quotes from talked me out of the sidewinder due to reliability - they did not want the service business created by the repeat issues.

Genie was not a part of those discussions and there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of the LM being trouble free.

I think its a 'roll the dice' situation.

That T&L is already gone. Saw it going past my place the two days ago. A different farmer bought it, and is probably going to use if for a corner system, not sure, I'll have to ask when I see one of them. A new Zimmatic is suppose to be going up in the next few days.

I put wall mount openers on all three doors on my garage, I don't know why anyone still installs a traditional opener????

Lifespan of those is pretty short anyways, based on my experience. Basically get about 4-5 blows worth of bubbles and then they get dumped out

That's no joke lol. My kids aren't so bad... But the neighbor kid loves bubbles and rarely makes it more than 4 blows before it's all over the ground... But he's a good kid and his folks are good people with a well stocked garage beer fridge so all is forgiven. I have repurposed an empty washer fluid jug as the bubble wand refill...and bought concentrate online. Need to print a custom funnel with a breather vent to make refills easier

Tempted to try some "recipes" for giant bubbles vs normal ones... Cause it just sounds cool

the giant bubbles are fun to do a few times for sure! Worth a couple hours on a saturday for sure. Hope you're feeling better quickly!
Wonders of modern medicine has the house on the mend...thanks sir! And the kids actually got to play with giant bubbles with a science demo at daycare today....they were excited about it....so sounds like it's on the docket

Speaking of things being on the docket...this apparently just got moved higher up:

1715829072440.png

While topping off the oil on the wife's ride tonight....I heard a big "pop" and looked over and saw this....torsion spring broke on the right side of the center support. Frickin A....

Was able to assist it enough to get the door up, her car out and it back down again, so the panic call of she can't get out of the garage and I'm still at daycare won't happen in the morning.

Now I either drop what I'm guessing is a $750 to $1k service call/spring replacement on a door that was planned to be replaced this summer anyway......or make her park outside until the door is replaced? DIY'ing the spring replacement isn't something I'm particularly excited about, so think this one I pay someone to deal with....or remind her she can park in the driveway until the new door shows up. I'll at least make 2 calls tomorrow to get a quote on the spring replacement.

Logan,
I have seen where they will hose clamp the Spring back together as a stop gap until a new spring can get installed. Normally this was on large commercial doors that have special springs that they did not have in stock.

I know you said you didn't want to DIY the torsion spring, but it's not that difficult. Plus you play with table saws and other dangerous tools, I'm sure you will be fine doing it.

I just completed this on my garage door due to, just like yours, the right spring broke. Replaced both springs at the same time and was done within an hour. I had to remove the whole shaft off the assembly cause the wall was 1" from the end of the rod, which hindered my ability to remove the spring. I did it by myself but it would of been nice to have someone with me. Not a requirement, but just would of been nice.

Use the website www.expressgaragedoors.com to figure out which torsion spring you need to buy, unless it's written on the spring. If you want to take the time, ****I Take this back, you will have to loosen the good spring due to how it's connected to the center of the assembly to the other spring****** you can count the numbers of 1/4 turns you have to do for the spring by loosening up your good spring. But there are charts to figure out how many turns you will need to do base on width and height of your door. I got the 18" bars to turn the spring with from home depot for $22, I got both springs for $120 from home depot also. So, for a total of $150 after taxes I replaced both of my torsion springs and spent just an hour doing the work. Also, that website has a good video to watch to show how it's done.

Oh and I actually got to use my 3/8" 8 point socket to disassemble the torsion bar, it was nice to see there was a reason I held onto those 8 pts sockets.

I didn’t get many photos cause I was just focusing on the job, but you can see how I didn’t have any clearance for the spring to come off the bar.

Oh the joys of home ownership! Hopefully you can find a quick/inexpensive solution in the meantime.

Thanks for the feedback gents! I started going down the path of a repair block with a couple of holes and bolts to clamp down on it. Flawless execution on a failed design....ok maybe flawless is a bit of a stretch

1716323307015.png

And no...I wasn't drilling aluminum at 312 rpm lol...that was taken as she was slowing down. But either way the block was way too large to get the spring wires wedged into....so I went back to the stupid simple approach and a couple of wire cable clamps/clasps. Got it rewound...maybe a bit light on tension but it's close enough for the hopefully intermittent usage it gets until new doors show up. We've given the go ahead on the new ones...haven't gotten the contract to put the deposit down and things released to production yet though

And got the door spring scabbed together just in time to put the inlaw's Palisade under cover. It's going to reside here for a couple weeks until they come back, which doesn't work out too bad as it means I should be able to tackle some projects on the Volvo and my truck without the stress of needing it fixed same day.

1716323678965.png

Also thanks to the storm from overnight, our daycare had water and staffing issues this AM so was closed...so we hit the zoo instead:

1716323796280.png

Hope @Atlascycle is doing ok....his general area got 5-6" or more in rain overnight....I got just over an inch but the runoff in the creeks from the downpour overnight across much of the metro is impressive:

How was the zoo? I haven't been in a few years but it was really nice.

Yeah, I've got several direct reports in central Iowa who had 4" or more in their gauge Monday morning....this isn't going to help. This rain fell on a generally already wet area as well:

1716330639676.png

Looks like weather was worst south I-80, this is Greenfield, IA this afternoon

Drone video showing the storm track thru town, much narrower then some of the other storms recently it appears...but basically total destruction for anything in it's path

Omaha Zoo....still flipping awesome. 2, maybe 3 hours is about the limit for my kids so we generally do half of it. Last time was the "front half" which is the rainforest, aquarium and desert dome...maybe sneak back to gorillas and sea lions. This time was the "back half" which is African Grasslands so giraffe, rhino, elephant etc, Asian Highlands, Sea lions, Gorillas...the awesome kids playground if it's open(it wasn't)...splash pad in the summer etc. We get the annual membership so it's an easy thing to go and do. Days like this with weather are always a mixed bag as to what will be open/out for viewing, several things were closed/under construction and some of the animals were still off exhibit...but still cool to see:

Logan,
We are doing alright over here, My wife's 6 month old explorer did not fair to well yesterday, dam hail, It has a trip to the body shop in it's future.
one of my coworkers said that when he came in yesterday (5:00am) his rain gauge showed 7.5" of rain overnight. The last front came through here around 12:30pm and @ 7:00pm we still have lots of flooded streets in Fremont.

Relatively calm on the storm front hear at least....prayers for those impacted in the nasty outbreak over the last day or two. We did have to hit the basement Thursday morning about 2:30 am thanks to tornado warnings....was a couple miles south of us but just moderate winds at our place. Saw this morning that they did classify a couple EF-0's that touched down about 2 miles east of us from that storm...definitely more fond of them in the daylight when I can see what's happening!

Otherwise....

A team member recommended this....so I had to try it....not a bad recommendation

bottle .jpg

Finally used the drill press on something that really needed it:

bracket 1.jpg

1/2" holes in 5/16" plate, (3) per bracket, (3) brackets total. Brackets were a neighbors that he was repurposing to mount some stadium seats for his garage or basement...I told him it was good he told me after the fact they were to mount seats from Donkey Stadium in Denver ;)

Finally getting back to some of my own projects...slowly

Had the intake port for the dust collector filter manifold printed in 2 parts for a couple weeks. Finally got the time and energy to go out and glue it up. Was also using up some old spools so it's a multi-color print.....slightly improved with a can of rattle can gray before install

duct 1.jpg

Glue was your standard superglue CA from the Starbond kit

Was in meat cooking mode apparently as there was a pork **** for pulled pork on the smoker and yard bird quarters were lunch off the oven:

yard bird.jpg

It got painted with the aforementioned Krylon and attached with grk cabinet screws. Hole was cut out with the jigsaw

duct 2.jpg

And installed. Used whatever gray, partial remaining tube was in the caulk gun to seal between the box and port. Little squeeze out to clean up but it'll peel right off with a razor blade.

Next up is cleaning off the long 2x4's from the shelf where it's going to go and hauling it up there, also need to get the insulation on the lid and the lid mounted to it before that happens.

Coming off the printer tomorrow morning is hopefully this holder for cutting fluid to go by the drill press...AnchorLube and Tap MAGIC. Planning to just double stick tape it in place...but if it works out embedded magnets in the base and back has crossed my mind

lubes.jpg*

*Image for representation, not shown in orientation it'll actually be printed at

For comparision, because of that embedded text, if it was printed as shown(standing up) with that text in a different color, it's a 12 hr print and it changes colors 242 times and it's about $3 worth of filament on color change "purges"

Laying it on it's back and using supports to help keep the circular cutouts...well circular:

slicer 2.jpg

Drops it to 6 dollar print and cuts 25% off the cost by only doing color changes 2x as the letter color is only on the last 2 layers in this orientation. Those supports cost about $.75 cents in filament and 1.5 hours in print time...but still worth it. Print times based on the Bambu printer, the Prusa mk3 would be about 1/2 the speed or 2x as long....and I'm honestly not invested enough in the lettering to do color changes and manual change filaments on it.
