I'm down in Gaithersburg, MD doing turnover maintenance on a rental property this week. I found the local ReStore was right behind the Home Depot complex, so I dropped in. Even though light fixtures were 50% off, I couldn't find anything less dated than what's already in my mid-eighties house.

However, there was the tool department...

I got this Crowntop Craftsman toolbox with very grimy interior and quite an eclectic collection of handyman stuff. I won't catalog all of it, but here are some of the highlights:
Crescent Tool Co tin snips
Channellock side cutters, missing a chunk out of the jaws
Klein 4" Grease gun nozzle
Kitchen knife :dunno:
Big ol' soldering iron
A collection of sockets, to include a Thorsen 1/4" square nut set, Pow'r Kraft, Mac, Craftsman, Dayton, and two Mossberg sheet metal sockets!
Spark plug gauges
Feeler gauges
Old school hose clamps
Tiny oil can
Drill bits, four lugs, Taiwan spark plug wrenches, cotter pins, etc, etc, etc.

Some people might have just pitched this grimy old fella into the trash can. I'm glad whoever had that decision to make chose a second life for it.

Edit: purchase price was $20.

Hey guys. First and most likely not the last time joining in this fun thread. Stopped at a local pawn shop and got a digital Starrett caliper for 35 bucks, a like new Warner 32' fiberglass ladder and the odd (pencil sharpener?) looking thing for a buck. Anyone know what it is?

Was #8 on line this morning and got in with the first wave. I ran to one corner with a stack on box and stood my ground and searched every inch. The first thing I grabbed was the small red box with the Bausch & Lomb loupe in it, I knew it was a goodie. This will get me back what I spent today threefold.
After searching I went to see if there were any scraps left in other areas and came up with a few like the chart and machete.

You could of went $50.00 on the box but then again no one took it for $80.00 so they might go $40.00. Other tools you got a nice haul on those. Any tools in the machinist box.

No tools it was empty! Yeah i was going to offer a little more then 1/3 off which would of sold it to me automatically at the end of today but i thought i didn't need it that bad and i just wanted it because it looked cool. I am kicking myself for not being there earlier the first guys got the good stuff and everything was marked really good

Well i left early in the morning so some person could of picked it up and tomorrow it will be about $57 dollars or best offer so someone will probably get it. But i figured more then $40 for something i will just use as a display wouldn't be worth it for me.

I TRIED to avoid going to garage sales today but I am hooked LOL. First stop was actually an antique show but I mostly wanted to go look and there was some nice stuff, old tools and cabinets and such LOL. Picked up the Nylint Model T hot rod, I really like these vintage metal toys. Paid $25.

Hit an estate sale after lunch, pretty picked over but picked up a USA wire brush, 2 Chinese brass brushes, Craftsman P2 stubby and a vintage Craftsman Vanadium flat tip screwdriver and Klein needle nose piers for $3 total.
Hit one more estate sale, practically no tools and then found a Snap On P2 screwdriver on the kitchen counter for a buck!

Nice opening post, Jake. Now, I'm going to violate one of the rules.

My favorite flea market was digging out from under the flood, so I went on to another antique shop that has been good to me a few times. I picked up a big cast iron electric/manual cream separator for $40. SWMBO was with me, and I figured the price would be much higher and I could pass with a clear conscience. No such luck. Good thing she's so understanding! I think with its heavy, bolt-down base it will make a good grinder stand. And, for $2 I scored a very interesting pair of parallel-jaw pliers. The mechanism is kind of like a Crescent wrench - never seen anything like them.

No pictures - but I'll get some and post them later. Really!!

...aaannnnd here they are! Turns out the Plierench is fairly common - several on ePay, and in its condition mine is worth just about what I paid. Love the bearclaw pattern on the handles.
I don't know if the cream separator will work for a grinder stand; the big, sturdy center column is shorter than I thought, and that three-armed bucket support may not be strong enough. We'll see.

Cody, that box is not worth more than $40 imho, I would have to really be in a spending mood to even pay that for it after owning one. They are not built as well as a comparable Kennedy, again jmo but they look cool so there's that.

Nice job...I once went to a sale on the last hour of the last day and was blown away at what I took home but for the most part......#8 in line is where you need to be. Good job.

Yeah i was going to put a $50 bid in but changed it to $40 because in the end i would just be using it as a cool display piece since it was in nice shape and had the keys with it. If i get it for $40 great but if someone else wanted it more then me that is okay i don't need it that bad i already got alot of other good deals at the sale.

Btw i went to a estate sale a few months back but i over slept and was about 30th in line and missed out on this wilton bullet vice they only wanted $35 for it and i wanted to see how bad i screwed up on it? I have seen these anywhere from under $50 to over $300 and i am not sure where this one falls in?

Not sure what size that one is but it's worth at least double that if it's not damaged. I think I paid more for a 5" one that was damaged and still got $40 or $50 for just the swivel base,

You screwed up on missing out on that wilton. Did you know it was $35 before the sale started?

You can see the price on the top of it! I know i was pissed all day that i didn't get it. I felt like offering the guy who bought it double what he paid but i am sure he knew what he had.

If you had paid him double you could have easily doubled your money flipping it.

Maybe next time.

You can read it on the neck it's a 8450 4.5" jaw width vise.

Also I can see Chicago 14 on it so it's probably a 1953-1960 vise.

BFBOB:

Thanks for putting up pics of your cream separator. Could see it being used as grinder or even a vise stand.

A year ago I bought a DeLaval which I intended to sell, but still have and restored it back to working condition.

Cream separator bases make excellent grinder stands at least in my experience. I have one that I've used for 40 years and my dad used it for decades before that. Just took off all the upper pieces and made a flat mounting plate for the grinder to sit on. It still has one of the bottom round plates that pivot still on it and I typically use there for a dressing tool or other temp storage.

Stumbled upon an estate sale today. Most everything was horrendously overpriced, but I got a box of tack cloths and then found a Roku box for $3! Works great!

If that vise wasnt broken, I probably would have hurt myself whipping out my wallet to pay for it.

What do you guys think is the time you should arrive at a estate sale if you see something you really want like the wilton vise?

If your not in line at a "popular" ES at least an hour ahead, the cream will generally be picked over or gone, (unless you are lucky and its the non-garage folks in front...)
