Nice scores there fellas.

It's been a while since I'd been to my friendly local recycling yard. Glad I stopped by today. :)

They had this Morgan vise sitting there just waiting for me. :rocker:

$30 bucks later and I was on my way.

Well done. One customer today was a scrap yard, turned inadvertent tool pick. There were several tables of salable items up front. Last time it was all household, but today household plus several boxes of tools!

While waiting on the customer, I took a quick look. One box had 5 or 6 no name jumbo wrenches and a broken torqometer wrench for $175, priced non-negotiable. Ouch!

The other box of random hand tools was marked $40 and had a nice Snap On plier and #2 phillips, some Craftsman tools, plus more. The lady said this box was negotiable or by the piece.

I picked out 7 pieces for $7. The Snap On pliers and screwdriver, old Craftsman locking pliers and adjustable, like new Channellocks, 4” Crescent wrench.

Asked how much for the rest of the box, and she gave me a sweet deal of $13 on all, which included a set of Craftsman SAE ratchet quick wrenches, a few Craftsman pliers, other random tools, and 25 brand new promotional carabiners from a company (most of which I gave to my co-workers).

Probably good I don’t go to this place often.

The tools at this estate sale belonged to a mechanical engineer with quite the car collection. I overheard his sister-in-law mention a Shelby Cobra and ’67 Cougar. Unfortunately, the cars were not on site but the garage was packed with high quality tools. The line wrapped around the block an hour before the doors opened. I managed to grab a Craftsman tool box marked “Plumbing” for $40. Here is what was inside:

Tools 1.jpg
- Craftsman silver box with tray (Is this the original tray?)

Tools 2.jpg
- Ridgid 10” pipe wrench
- Diamalloy 10” pliers
- Diamalloy 8” pliers
- Knipex Cobra 7” pliers
- Knipex Cobra 10” pliers
- Craftsman pipe wrench pliers USA
- Japan needle nose pliers
- Craftsman bit driver with bits in handle
- Archer nut driver set in case

Tools 3.jpg
- Husky 10” adjustable plumbing wrench
- Superior Tool P.O. plug wrench
- Superior Tool sink drain wrench
- Superior Tool tight spot wrench
- Superior Tool tub drain wrench
- Slip & Lock basin wrench
- Bibb seat wrench (top left)

Tools 4.jpg
- Oxwall folding ruler
- Channellock No. 960 electrical locknut pliers
- three promotional pocket screwdrivers with reversible bit and magnet
- Mini “Imp” tube cutter
- Other misc items

Tools 5.jpg
- Snap ring 300 pc assortment
- E clip 300 pc assortmanet
* Better to have it when you need to avoid having to drive to the store.

Tools 6.jpg
- Goof Off
- PVC primer and solvent
- Gatorade container full of plumbers putty

Spent a lot more than usual today but came away with some good stuff.

I finally found a Wilton vise from the Chicago era. It's a Cadet 9140 with 4" jaws. I haven't taken it apart yet but it looks to be in very good shape. The jaws are a little worn but not bad for a 64 year old. I'll post more photos on the vise thread tomorrow.

24 Jul 20-1b.jpg24 Jul 20-1c.jpg

I picked up the CM Crown torque wrench because it was still in the box. and the Indestro Super 888 ignition set looks practically unused. This makes my third Holo-Krome box--unfortunately, when I got it home only one of the twenty hex keys was HK.

24 Jul 20-5.jpg24 Jul 20-5b.jpg
24 Jul 20-3.jpg24 Jul 20-4a.jpg

It was the first day of the sale and they hadn't price-marked many of the garage items besides the Wilton--$176. I had already balked at the vise and a couple of other things but I kept bringing items up and asking the prices. When I brought the torque wrench, ignition set and hex box up the boss quickly used his price gun to mark them $16, $4 & $12. Negotiations ensued and I wound up with all four items for initial asking price of the Wilton--$176.

24 Jul 20-2a.jpg

Then on my way out of the garage I saw the Stevens Walden TV32 set and remembered that Provincial had schooled me on STW last week. The boss smiled and said he was being nice as he put a $15 sticker on it. I haven't been able to find a catalog with this set in it and it appears to be a conglomeration of 1/2, 3/8, and 1/4 tools. Sadly, no ratchets. I think it must be a fairly late production since AA doesn't mention the socket style at all. Probably from the 70s or maybe 80s. Any help would be welcomed.

Pretty good trip (Lugz 2020_27) to the flea market today.

attachment.php

The pliers, from top to bottom, are original (Forged Steel Products, not Snap-on) Vacuum-Grip water pump pliers, WWII CeeTeeCo combo slip joints, 1st gen linesman logo Klein, and Kraeuter BELL SYSTEM. The punches are Long C and BLUE-LINE (I have seen some DOE wrenches, never anything else, forget who owned this 50's brand...). Vlchek screwdriver. Bought the cheap-o midget hinge handle just to see the brand under the wooden handle a PO put over it. The swivel is a 3/8-inch drive PROTO spark plug socket. The 1/2-inch drive cog is BRITOOL.

They are probably around the same vintage as these sets. They have that style of sockets. I’m not sure of their exact vintage.

picked up this MBC tool chest locally for $50. Was very grimy, I think machining oil, since there was alot of machining swarf in the drawers. But the oil mostly protected the box from rust. The drawers and top surface had cork liners on them, which I think is the cause of the residue on the top surface. The larger drawer is not shown in the pics but I have, and the bottom drawer(s) and slides (below the horizontal brace) are missing. MB-304A 6023.

Anyways, after alot of Dawn soap and water, and a couple of sponges donated to the cause, it cleaned up pretty well. I may sand and paint the bottom of the bigger drawer (not shown).

I was able to straighten most of the drawer slides, but would like to replace one or 2 of the existing. What brand slides (17") should work? Any ideas on donor drawers too?

thanks

I believe the Archer nut driver set was sold by Radio Shack.

What were all those plugs in the hex box removed from?

Nice finds so far, gents! I'm still in self-quaratine for another week after returning from out of New England travel, so no sales for me. Guess I'll wile away the weekend working on the LS swap into my Impala.

Happy hunting, all!

We went to a few Garage and Estate Sales this morning and I found something at a Sale we go to periodically. I think the woman is in the Estate Sales business or has access to leftover items from ES's because she has lots of varied stuff and it's obvious none of it is hers.

Mrs No_Garage picked up 2 smalls and I found a Craftsman pre-block grinder in 1/4 HP for $25. The bearings are smooth and the ONLY weird thing is that I see NO EVIDENCE that it was ever equipped with a power switch! It was manufactured in June 1964 - so it's older than me.

Has anyone seen a grinder without a switch?

Cheers

Jim

You guys are doing well!

JNG, those have surfaced (Without a switch), but clearly its something you will want to ad...

Shelby, I have one of those Jorganson clamps I use on my DP periodically... Nice finds!

Its dead here today -One drive by, worthless, and one estate sale, (masks and the use of hand sanitizer required (sanitizer provided) I had gloves so got a pass...

Not much the estate of an elderly woman, and the merchandise generally showed it, I passed on a Skill saw and a SS water pressure fire extinguisher ($20, so more than I'm willing to pay... it did have the nicer wide mouth, but $$$)

So I left with a Pyrex (branded) baking dish and a 2 cup measuring cup that actually pours cleanly (Why can't they get this right anymore?)

Not a necessarily a garage sale, but I hit up the local Amazon return store after seeing them advertise an M18 Impact Wrench on Facebook. All items $5 each. Had to wait in line for a while, but I would say for $5 it was worth it. Also picked up a few other random things.

Clemson, I've never heard of an Amazon return store, but are you saying that you got that Milwaukee impact for $5?????

Outlaw, I thought it was my imagination. The newer Pyrex measuring cups drool everywhere!

That does sound strange. Maybe it was intended to be used with a remote (foot?) switch?

Yes, I got the Milwaukee impact for $5. There is a store called Bin-Time near me that sales returns from mostly Amazon. They re-stock on Saturday and Sunday when everything is $5. Then $2 on Monday and $1 on Tuesday for anything that's left. Everything is thrown into big OSB bins. Today was my first day and it was quite the experience for sure! Thankfully most people were going after electronics so I was able to quickly scan the place for the red box! :rocker:

My wife made me take the family Pokémon hunting and while driving through an older neighborhood, I spotted 2 tool boxes set out for bulk trash pickup. Here's what I found.

I've been here since the inaugural thread in 2012 and I think that Pokemon hunting might be a first for a backstory! jeffmoss or Outlaw can confirm.

:eyecrazy: Is that box on the left with the external cantilevers marked Snap-on!? If so, I am getting the ****-O-Meter ready. These boxes were made by Duplex in Sherman, NY from 1932 to 1957. Snap-on branded them HandiKits, and they came in three sizes: Junior, Senior, and Master. I have a Junior and I've been hoping to run into a Master for years. I may have to take up Pokemon hunting!

So in early July, I told a FM seller I would drive to her location in the morning to buy a worn out Gerstner for $75. I offered to send the payment then via Paypal but she didnt respond and later that evening she Messengered me that box was sold. Oh well.
This evening I had made arraignments to go buy a 4 1/2 Scout vise and just as I was getting ready to leave I saw the Gerstner posted again, same seller , now for $30!. I was trying to get a message to her about sending the money right now via Paypal but couldnt get it to sound right to me to, so I left to get the vise.
By the time I returned and messenger-ed her about the box, she replied it was sold... Well, Dang !

However... the vise seller asked me if I was interested in some vintage tools. Well, yes !! He had a brace and some bits and a gun type hand drill, which I bought as it was cool. Got it home and I see it is made by The Ruger Corp.
Well, a little searching turns out is was the same Ruger company of firearms fame. So I got over losing the Gestner.

You never know how the day will turn out! (Needless to say, the wife was impressed!)

+1 on missing out on FM deals - even when you offer to pre-pay! At the same time, so of my favorite finds have been from FM.

But that Ruger hand drill is a rare piece! I have only ever read about them! Well done!

Wow lots of good luck out there for sure.

Those tools without the switch (like that grinder) were usually plugged into switched outlets...

I finally had time to clean out that rolling Snap On service cart I got. No time to check each tool but quite a few Blackhawk sockets. Guy was a real slob. That pile behind the tools was mixed in with it.

Just got everything out into the back of one of my trucks for now. I'm getting back logged on tools to sort, so much AC to do here atm.

Haven’t gone to almost any sales, but I’ve been scoping out the local classifieds. Saw an ad for three sets of Snap-on impact swivel sockets for $150 so I ran down there. The guy told me he had just won a storage unit auction and it had a ton of tools that he hadn’t sorted through yet. He let me sort through the many piles upon piles of things he had unloaded from his truck into his backyard. Paid the $150 for the sockets (they run from 1/2” all the way up to 1 5/16”!), and picked up everything else in the photo for $50

Included are 20” Blue Point pliers, misc Snap-on sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, THLF72 ratchet, and Snap-on/Browning pocket knife.

You, excellent haul there! Some big sockets.

Redvise, that’s a sweet find. Haven’t run into one before, but I have the feeling someone selling one in the wild wouldn’t want to let it go too cheap if I ever do see one.

Not a necessarily a garage sale, but I hit up the local Amazon return store after seeing them advertise an M18 Impact Wrench on Facebook. All items $5 each. Had to wait in line for a while, but I would say for $5 it was worth it. Also picked up a few other random things.

Wow. I bet there are a lot of jealous members reading your post. Does it work? Major suckage pending.

My wife made me take the family Pokémon hunting and while driving through an older neighborhood, I spotted 2 tool boxes set out for bulk trash pickup. Here's what I found.

Is that an Any Angle wrench? I can’t believe what people throw away.

This is the box I purchased from the scrap yard, of their items for sale out in front. I cleaned out trash and other junk before photos.

The long Snap On pliers had me hooked. Ended up with whole deal for $20 :)+ $2 more for the Klein crimper, thanks to a negotiable seller.

There’s a 4” Crescent for the collection. Today I discovered the tiny Owatonna screwdriver!

Kind of bugging me that there isn’t a name visible on the rolling head pry bar. Looked it over again today. It’s an old one for sure, with the hex stock.

Pics cont.

There are a few cheap pliers and wrenches, one S-K combo, Snap On pliers and screwdriver, a nice Channellock. Craftsman pliers, adjustable, screwdrivers, and a nice set of wrenches. Quite the cheapo knife collection. Atkins hacksaw, Irwin and Credo ? Screwdrivers. 25 or so caribiner clips, etc.

A friend and I hit a much touted estate sale, 425 pics on the posting, said they expected to take 4 weekends.
So of course we went, pretty good distance away.
The prices were pretty much at premium and some cases beyond.

Still found a bagful of things to get. Handful of US cutters and needle nose.

I think my highlight of the day was this Ajax drill bit holder with bits for $10.

An assortment of Weldon counter sink bits.

A pair of German made end cutters that are on a 45 deg angle.

They had some nose vises, they weren’t too bad on the prices.
I picked up this one cause it was neat, no name that I’ve found, just a bunch of numbers on the various pieces.
It’s a older on with the bolt that goes through a bench top.

Each of the jaws swivel.

I have another with the mount bolt design.

:rocker:

I don't know why no one else seems to be paying attention to your score, but YOU ****!!!!!

I need to find a place like that...

Cool Ruger, never knew those things existed! Does it still function? Are you going to restore it?
