Saw a praying mantis at a city park (at night) a few weeks ago! Very rare to see them around here!

Got a call from a guy who said he had a vise and anvil for sale, came home with these. Anyone have any ideas on the anvil? English? Early? About 150# and it looks like at some point it stubbed its toe

Visited two disappointing sales this morning. First promised a small Reed-looking vise that turned out to be the most welded and braised hunk of metal I've ever seen. Should have taken a photo, but was too despondent to think about it at the time. Second place offered a 6.5 gallon parts washer, but it was pretty well used and they wanted $55 for it. They were unimpressed when I pointed out you could buy a new one for that.

Stopped by a third sale on the way home that I didn't think had much promise but came away with some gold for $25.

CM Heritage tool box in very good shape, (looks like it was silver spray bombed, but it's just the lighting)
a sturdy unmarked OD box that the PO kept cotter pins in, (Slowly chipping away at very resilient 40-50 year old masking tape)
a soft wire wheel, and
a Stanley Handyman 80-210 2.5" clamp-on swivel vise.

22 Oct 20-1.jpg22 Oct 20-2.jpg

And of course, my ever-present wanna-be garage dog.

Love the Heritage box. I saw a nice one like it at my last flea, but I had spent myself down to a single dollar at that point.
The de-mummification of the OD box may be aided with alcohol (applied to the box), which gets between the dried adhesive and the paint. I’d test an inconspicuous spot first - if the paint gets a cloudy white surface when the alcohol fully evaporates, it contains lacquer, so try WD40 instead.

Flashlight flea market finds from this morning (Lugz 2020_50) include a wonderful vintage Navy tool bag and a pair of PLOMB LOS ANGELES 3/4-inch drive sockets.

This bag is very well made. Note the steel corner supports. It has plyboard riveted into the back and bottom. The canvas straps and steel buckles are intact and not at all weak or deteriorating. All the rivets are copper. The material is heavy impregnated duck. The only issue is that it is very stiff. Something heavy must have been sitting on it, with the front part collapsed, and it will take some softening and maybe a thick wooden box or improvised "jacks" or something stuck inside to get it back to its original rectangular shape. WWII at least. Maybe older.

Lugz, NICE Heritage jointer/planer. I don’t think I could have walked away from that.
That one left-behind...I guess the white vise is a Prentiss, but are you also showing the speakers? I can’t make out the brand.

EDIT - oh, maybe the workbench? Nice legs.

I made it out to a huge hoarder estate sale today. There was literally tons of good old tools there. I could have and should have left with more, but I’ve been trying to focus my collection a bit more, plus I was getting crazy from the crowds. I’ll probably go back tomorrow and pick over what’s left. I’m sure I missed plenty.

Here’s what I did grab. The 1st photo is the pile, the second one is Plomb on the upper right. Snap on below it. Proto, craftsman, and misc to the left.

EDIT - oh, maybe the workbench? Nice legs.
Posted the wrong photo. The workbench is actually the reason I left the Athol vise on top of it behind. He wanted to sell the whole shebang. The bench is Hallowell (Standard Pressed Steel) and nice and had a hanging shelf system that went under it. It was just a little too much/big for me to deal with it right now, and I didn't feel like spending that much, either. I am going to post photos in the Metal Cabinets thread.

Here’s what I did grab. The 1st photo is the pile,
Is that a Bakelite Remington U.M.C. RH-4 sticking out of that sheath?

Have you looked closely at the sides to see if there are any type of marker marks on it?

You left the wooden drilled tool holder (desk organizer) behind? Shame on you those are selling on Etsy for good money. The hipsters are all working from home and need reclaimed wooden desk organizers to hold their pens and stuff.

Yes. Thanks.

I didn't think I put it away as rusty as those first pics. I did a bit of cleaning first. Likely just WD40 and a bit of a brass brush. The huge difference a bit of TLC makes!!!

I picked up these today. I thought the design and seller saying Swiss made were both good. I haven't seen sockets designed quite like this. Traditional sockets come to a point. Radius sockets come to a half moon. These are closer to how metrinch looks but these are just metric. I haven't found anything online about them but thought $25 was very fair.

Seller said, "They are Swiss made. Very early 2000’s. They were supposed to be used on a “historic” job in NYC , but job was shut down , contractor went out of business."

1/2" drive 10mm-32mm.

Every hear of the brand Stanlux? Good quality?

Interesting to me how the quick release mechanism works. The drive tang is setup just like the original Craftsman RHFT QR in ~1970 with the plunger pushing out the front.

S&A Pens? Desk tools? Can they pry themselves off the Laptop/Phone/Tablet to use anything "analog"?

Decorative props. We all know those people are paperless, it'll save the world.

I will say, without a drill press and good drill/forstner bits, making a good looking pen/tool holder isn't very easy:(. The Etsy store does do a nice job on those, more power to them for having a nice product and finding someone to pay their price for it.

Now that we’ve returned to the Bay Area, we thought that we should check out a few sales. Shiftless and Username had mentioned one in Concord, CA and we went there first. The advertising made it look like a huge honey hole but the prices were ludicrous. Items were marked three to four times their average value. eBay equivalents including shipping would have been higher quality and cheaper. We left empty handed. We did run into an old friend there who also left without buying anything. Sale number two netted two clutch head drivers for 50 cents each. Sale number three was a surprise. The tools were in a plastic tub and I ended up buying about half of them for a reasonable price. The last sale netted some Thorsen Vee DOE wrenches, a Powr-Kraft DOE and a mystery speeder. The best thing was that almost every tool customer we saw today was wearing a mask.

Anthony's sale? Listed as Estate?

The expensive sale in Concord was listed on Craigslist as a Tool and Antique sale. I’ve actually bought a few tools from him previously when he had the sale out of his garage. He was high then but now he’s astronomical. I didn’t catch his name.

Indeed. You now that's a Keystone Mfg set, right? I don't think we have one on the Keystone thread. You should post it there. It will get buried here on the GS thread.

Some nice finds fellas.

This box and tools came from Habitat and a pawn shop. Caught a sale, I have under 6 bucks in the lot.

-Utilco cash box by Union Steel, Leroy,NY. Some dents, works great. May be a new home for the growing 4” adjustable collection.
-nice Fleet and Easco pliers
-cutters, can’t quite read the brand. Looks like GM and a series of numbers
-Ford and Williams wrenches
-Proto bit socket and drag link
-Craftsman bit driver

From another pawn shop,

-Mac 1/4” speeder. Was marked a whopping $30 and located in the bargain bin. I asked the girl if that was the price and she said what do you want to pay. I offered a couple bucks and she said just give me $3! Never hurts to ask.

Pleasant morning expedition to Haycock Mountain with my son, Wawa hoagie lunch & stopover at Quakertown Flea, where I collected four rusty Bonney wrenches for $5.
The two 10” Crocs are pre-1921 and Mar1923. Jan1945 Bonaloy DBE and stamped B-shield S-wrench. Derusting will have to happen before I can be sure of much else.

Snuck out to one sale today. Paid a whopping $17 for everything but got some clean items you don’t normally see...
Rehandled p&c ball pein 24oz-$4

2 p&c 3/8 drive Phillips sockets, snap on Phillips sockets and the craftsman vv metric sockets in a grab bag for $5. Metric runs from 4 mm all the way up to 11mm. I can’t believe someone didn’t grab these since I went at 11am.
Proto la cape chisel
Proto mfd ignition pliers-$2
Proto professional thumb wheel ratchet adapter-$5...

Not a huge find and not the usual kind of sale I normally like. The tools where super clean and some of the stuff was a bit overpriced but I still got some deals! Super excited about the ratchet adapter and the snappy bits

Interesting day today. First stop was early (7:30 AM) and an Estate sale. Good prices, I should have bought more. the first thing I grabbed was a 26" Kennedy tool box, (8 Drawer 526, BUT I didn't know that at the time! it was locked shut. Heck, I wasn't sure it was Kennedy...)

For $5 and unknown content, it was worth it! It wasn't heavy so I had to hope th contents were a good surprise... The Box and the proof it was Kennedy after I got it home and after I got it opened... (More on that process later) I actually came home, and opened it up, as the rest of the sales starter at 9...

attachment.php

The remnants of a Kennedy decal - Barely enough to convince me its Kennedy...

attachment.php

I also picked up 3 cylinders of Propane (old stock - these don't have the raised seam the later and current cylinders have - that's important for people that have the vintage Turner slant bottle stove or lantern, as the new stuff won't fit in the sleeve...) Plus the Hemostat forceps

attachment.php

A few TOOs had nothing but I did get these clamps at a planned 9:00 starter:

The wing of the 4 inchers has "Pat." on one side and MAY have a year date? Maybe after cleanup

attachment.php

And after that trip I went to one more that had a late posted ad - SK extension and 3 sockets, 3 SO, sockets, and a SO thumb spinner in 3/8 plus a Proto (the larger of the two), a NB DBE and 2 sockets, A Bonney breaker, a multi level, an old upholstery button needle, an "spoon I'm not sure what its for (it has relatively sharp edges), a wood molding plane (1/2 round), and some para-cord.

attachment.php

A VERY old dovetailed box with MUCH patina! About 6X6 inside.

attachment.php

An a Rainbird head on a tripod - I've seen a couple of these at a house with a large yard on my daily walks. I thought they made them, it but clearly these are manufactured! for $3 it was a no brainer!

attachment.php

$15 all at the last Estate sale!

The lock on the Kennedy box fought me a bit., but I manged it. I first tried the keys on my big key chain and one fit, but would not turn.

Then i tried picking it, but it wasn't having that either.

Then I got out the "key collection" and found close to a dozen thst fit but no joy.

I went back to the picking....

I went back to the first key that fit, and jiggled and worked it and jiggled and worked it and suddenly it started! once they start, you are in!

So this was what was revealed...

In the top - Papers and a couple of vials of contact cleaner from the 50's:

Center Drawer, some plastic boxes, and old vinyl tape:

A small drawer - some flashlight bulbs and ancient ointment (allready tossed):

Another small drawer: Tube socket adapter, an empty vial of the contact cleaner, a feeler gauge, and some specialty tool...

Yet another small drawer, "Stuff"

The top wide drawer: an envelope and an adapter tool for testing electronics (has a BNC connector on one end...)

And in the envelope, another divider for the box:

All in all It was an "Al Capone's Vault" moment...

For practical purposes it was empty!

I got a call from my son who was at an Estate Sale nearby. There were 2 stacks of 3 "case" Globe Wernicke Barrister Bookcases for a reasonable price. I hemmed and hawed and agreed to come meet him. I love them - but I don't have any room for them at this time . . .

They were in the attic of the house and were holding Readers Digest story books from 1955 on - a Spring and a Fall edition each year thru the 1960's. The cases are a little battered but mostly complete - the base on one stack needs to be taken apart and rebuilt and the top is missing from one of them. The good news is that it's a simple design so I can make a copy from my wood supply. There is some veneer damage that will need to be fixed.

The 2 stacks don't match in size or interior finish so they will have to live separately when they are done.

They are currently sitting in Mrs No_Garages parking spot so we need to find a home for them until we can begin the repair and refinishing of them.

Cheers

Jim

Congrats, Jim! I've got a short (2-unit) G-W stack that I found for peanuts earlier this year, and it's sitting on top of that old Wright Field tools chest I picked up also earlier this year. And I have that barbershop display case if you recall. But I could really use a 4-unit G-W to round out my refurnishing of the Lugzsonian. I've seen the same unit 5 or 6 times this year but the guy just won't come off of $375.

Jim, nice finds on the barristers' bookcases. That is one of my favorite things to find at at sales as they go for $200 a shelf at antique shops.

Awesome finds everyone! I will finish taking pics in a bit of my hoardings.
