    Holes in studs/etc

This is to consolidate three recent posts of mine regarding which hole bits to use when, a question about Fastcap Quick Mandrels, and which drill to drive them (https://tinyurl.com/y96plzea, https://tinyurl.com/y8dzua2m, & https://tinyurl.com/ych57qfl) which really shouldn't have been separate...

When to use: stubby augurs vs self feed vs hole saw vs spade bits

When do you use a stubby augur bit vs a self-feed bit vs a hole saw bit vs a spade bit? I'm talking about choosing one over another for holes they can all do up to say 1-1/4" diameter & say 2 to 3" deep, not door installs/larger holes where I'd use a hole saw or 4x/timber/several plates where...

    Drill for holes in studs?

    1. Will a corded Milwaukee 1/2" magnum drill with hole saw bits fit inside studs 16" on center? or 2. Is there a cordless 1/2" right angle drill suitable for hole saw bits or auger bits, or do I need corded? Overall I'd rather have #1 if it would fit.

FastCap Quick Mandrel and hole saws

I was looking at some of Paul Ricalde's youtube vids and he really seemed to like the FastCap Quick Mandrel. http://www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=57432#!prettyPhoto Anyone use this? Looks interesting. Also, I'm looking for some hole saw sets. One is a cheaper version for...

Nail kitchen under-cab LED light color first time

We just recently had new countertops put in, and then we installed the backsplash ourselves. I want to nail the color of under-cabinet LED strips we will purchase soon the first time if possible. The pics show our gray-toned countertops and backsplash. The cabinets are ever-so-slightly warm...

Knipex Pliers Wrench 5" or 7"

I want a smaller pair for hard to reach small plumbing and for (re-)straightening copper wire for electric installs etc. I'm thinking the 7" would be fine but are they worth the $45+? What size do y'all like? I have the 10" pair.

Where would y'all relocate this outlet

We are getting new stone countertops in our kitchen next week. The end result will be all flat without the bar "riser". However, we'd like to keep a receptacle on this end of the peninsula. The dishwasher is so tight against the carcass that even a shallow box wouldn't fit. The bar riser is a 7"...

When will I find stranded resi wiring?

I do disaster demo/rehab/rebuild, and it generally will be on older, lower-income housing which may be under or not insured and may not be up to current code. I'd like to be as handy as possible for rough-in and wiring up outlets for on-site power. Volunteers are permitted to work up to a...

    Workwear

[There hasn't been any info on this topic since '13 so I'll start a new one.] What do y'all wear while seriously working and why? Boots: I have two pairs of steel-toe Wolverines. The waterproof pull-on's have a plastic sock so you can actually stand in a few inches of water. The non-waterproof...

    Adjustable wire strippers

Anyone use adjustable wire strippers like these? http://www.kleintools.com/catalog/adjustable-wire-stripperscutters/adjustable-wire-stripper-solidstranded Irwin has a pair where a 'nut' with a flat ground in is the stopper. Most use the screw head as a stopper. Can't tell from the pics what...

    Hand sanding stainless?

Our son and his fiancee bought themselves a house a few months ago and I've really enjoyed helping/teaching them on some fix-em-ups. So he's in a real DIY mode and wants to clean up his stainless golf club faces a bit himself. I could let him use my ROS if hand sanding would work. What grits and...

    Non-Craftsman tools at Sears

Our local Sears was the only place I found Knipex, Greenlee, and Wiha on the shelf in my little town. I have a set of cheap Evolv deep impact sockets that are in my job-site set so that if I or someone else loses one that's no big deal. I just don't foresee any brick and mortar stores that will...

What combo wrenches do y'all keep on hand?

What size combo wrenches do y'all keep for immediate access, such as in your toolbox or on the wall, for general wrenching? I know it depends on what you work on, so this is for just in general. I mostly use sockets but I keep the following combos in my box next to my bench... Kobalt flex head...

Test for dead Bosch impact driver?

Can I test my Bosch 18v impact driver and my two slimpack batteries to see which is/are dead? I have a multimeter but I don't know how to use it for this. First one battery went out then almost immediately the second did... or so it seems. It's several years old and has lived a good but hard...

    Knipex CoBolt vs Center Cutters

It's me again with another cutting tool question... but hey, I do demo work and every incremental advantage pays off. I bought the 10" hi lev dykes already, intending on getting the CoBolts later. Now it's that time. Looking at the 8" CoBolts and comparing them to the 10" hi lev center cutters...

    Axe/Maul/Hammer handles

Maybe a little discussion on swinging tools handles? Especially my question on the maul handles... First pic top to bottom: 2.5 lb Berylco H322 Double-Faced Engineer's Hammer Original handle was 15" and ruined. I put on a new 9" handle, very slightly oval, constant in section, slight knob, and...

Convert Ridgid 2.5 gal comp to 7.5 gal?

I have a Ridgid Mobilaire 2.5 gal compressor http://tinyurl.com/j8hn5ay . It is 9.6A/125V oil-less with 2.1@90, but I cannot find the hp rating (calcs say it could be 1.25 hp but I think that's high). I want to see if I can mount a 5 gal pig I have laying around on it to increase capacity to 7.5...

    Trimo pipe wrench

I need more pipe wrenches like I need a hole in my head but I picked up this 14" Trimont Trimo last Thursday in Little Mountain SC because I only had Ridgids and one Schick til then. It's in good shape and will make a fine user with it's sharp teeth. I don't know if I'll hit it with a brass...
