Vintage craftsman table saw hums but won't run

Personally (doesn't mean much) I'd prefer to keep the original motor. There is a value somewhere on the cap or go to the internet or a motor shop and ask what the value should be. It is not rocket science. There is a value, typically a range . Find a source ( motor shop, internet). If it...

Vintage craftsman table saw hums but won't run

Typically, the cap is outside the motor housing in an enclosure about 2" in diameter and 5-6" long. Usually flag terminals, just pull loose. Worth trying a new cap, value will be on the outside. Easy access. If that doesn't work, come back here. If there is a motor repair shop close...

Which Motor would be better? Air Compressor

If the motor runs, why replace it?? Fill the oil cups with non-detergent oil and run it. Then you don't have to worry about pulley size, etc. If it doesn't, the 1 1/8" shaft motor is the way to go. I reckon the original motor was 1750 RPM, so you don't have to worry about a new pulley. Just...

    Electric Motor Shuts Down

For $23 I'd order the switch. Just me. Those things are somewhat calibrated to the motor to open at a percentage of full rpm. The consequence of some fault would be excessive heat. Did you inquire as to the cost of a new motor??

    Firing Up an Old Compressor

An explosion, by definition, requires a combustible gas. They burst, rupture, whatever you want to say, not an explosion. Can scare the s--- out of you. Or, in a very rare instance, hurt you. I would, it it was mine (it's not) make sure it had oil in it and light it up. If you are really...

electric motors with oil cups - which oil.

Not motor oil. If the motor has oil cups it likely has oilite bearings, not ball bearings. Oilite doesn't like detergent. So, 3-in 1. Or, a zoomspout oiler. Or, any non-detergent oil.

    3 HP compressor motor-single phase

Holy s---. I haven't got time to read nor can I understand all this stuff. Even if I was an EE, given the era I'm from I don't need all this . And, I have 9 years of education beyond High School. Guess I wasted my money or have a pea-sized brain, you choose. And, I have four VFDs in my...

    Well Point restore

If you can cap the well, throw some dry ice down the well, cap it. Blows the crud out. Do it more than once if you need to. In spite of the scoffers, shooting a gun down the well does work. Not a long term solution, but helps for a while. I don't think that a 22 bullet would introduce a...

    Electric Motor Questions

A motor shop can megohm the windings, tell you if it's worth it, bake it (to dry it out), dip it in varnish. Beats speculating and taking amateur polls. If you want to replace the bearings yourself, you can. If the motor repair man is decent, he'll sell you bearings at cost or with a minimal...

How do you keep a gravel driveway weed free?

My neighbor used the propane torch, then went in for lunch, then called the fire department. Tore off some siding and some sheetrock. Be careful. Monobor Chlorate works for me. Non-specific herbicide. Fairly large sized pellets. I spread it by hand, out of a dishpan. Seems to last 15-18...

    Upgrade Compressor Pump

Amen. I would watch Craig's list, offer up, etc. If you aren't in too much of a hurry, you can score. I am personally not a fan of 3450 rpm motors on compressors. The slower you can spin a compressor and get the volume you want the quieter, the cooler, and the longer it will last. And, 21...

    Forward and reverse motor

There is a way to instantly reverse single phase electric motors using a special centrifugal starting switch which is not electronic. It allows the leads to be reversed while the motor is running, unlike conventional start switches. I think it is not possible to retrofit an existing motor with...

    Forward and reverse motor

Electric motors on industrial or heavy duty electric chain hoists have special centrifugal (start) switches allowing instant reverse as a safety factor. A device called a SinPac allows the same function electronically. Google it, or find an electric motor repair shop and buy the repairman a 6...
