Project Sweat Arrestor (aka helmet dryer)

If you race or have worn a helmet for any period of time, you know it gets hot in there and you will sweat. My particular genre is endurance racing in which most drivers do 2 hour (or more) stints. During the summer months your helmet can be almost dripping wet after 2+ hours, so with that...

My Valve Cover Desk Lamp Project

For a while now I have been wanting to build a piece of furniture from some combination of automotive parts. I've had a few ideas, but I didn't want to build something that wouldn't be ever seen or used. The boss is not going to let that kind of stuff in the house, and out my the shop it...

    Firewood Kart

Earlier this year I cannibalized my old garden kart for another project. I still need to haul the wood from outside into the shop so I needed a new kart. HF has a garden kart for about $80, and I guess I could have gone that route, but it would need to be modified to work, and besides, where's...

    Misting System?

I've been considering adding one of these to my 36" shop fan. Any of you guys have one or something similar? It's pretty damn hot in NC right now and I don't venture out in the shop when it's unbearable like it is now.

    Hindsight...yeah, yeah (trailer help needed)

As some of you know, I built my own 4'x7' utility trailer a few years ago. It was designed to haul my tires and tools to the track, but is used for hauling whatever I need. The construction material was overkill (again hindsight is a cruel b*tch) as I used 2"x2x3/16" angle and 2"x2"x1/8"...

Roof truss modification for a 2-post lift

I have a friend looking into doing this, and I've seen others post about similar but I can't seem to find the thread(s). Can someone help me out?

    Adding an outlet...instead of Romex

Can I use 3 individual pieces of 12 GA THHN left over from the wiring in my shop? The outlet will be tied into an existing switch literally right on the opposite side of an interior wall. The run will be less than 1 ft so I don't want to buy a whole roll of Romex just for this. What say you...

    Lean-To Shelter Design Questions

I've been needing to build a shelter off the back of my shop for two years now so I think I'm going to try and get it done before winter. Basically I need a covered area for firewood and my utility trailer. It will be about 7.5' deep x 16' long. I'm trying to decide if using joist hangers...

    Recycling CFLs?

I'm slowing upgrading my interior lighting to LED, which will leave me with quite a few CFLs. I know they contain toxic Mercury so I'm not going to simply toss them in the trash. What should I do with them?

    LED Under-Cabinet Lighting Question

I bought a some of the LED strip lighting to replace the fluorescent ones I currently have under our kitchen cabinets. My question for those who have done the same, how did you secure them? Yes, that have an adhesive backing, but I have read that once they get warm that doesn't hold up very...

    Techs...A mystery just for you!

In the category of "Name that noise", here's one that may baffle you. It baffled me, but hey, I'm a AutoCAD operator, not an automotive tech! Vehicle: 2007 Honda Fit Sport Engine: 1.5L I-4 Mileage: 120,000 The water pump, serpentine belt, idler pulley, and plugs were changed about 20K miles...

Need help with our new pantry

Now that racing season is over, Mama wants some long overdue house projects done. The first on the list is a pantry. Currently we don't have one and the existing cabinets just don't have enough room. I attempted to get a price from a local contractor who never never showed up to give me a...

    Fabrication Help

    Pneumatic Brad Nailer Recommendation

I don't need a full-on nail gun, just something for brads and the like. Any recommendations from you guys? I'd prefer to use Amazon Prime if possible. Thanks!

    Shop Ventilation Fan

My mostly un-insulated (actually the roof is) 40'x40' (10' walls, not including the peak) all-metal shop in NC is hot in the summer...go figure. After a couple of summers I think it's time to pull the trigger and buy an exhaust fan to install near the roof gable. I already wired the switch...

Handicap ramp project for my little girl

A couple of years ago a built a bench for our two miniature dachshunds to sit and look out the window during the day while the wife and I are at work. Sadly, last May our oldest "Ally" passed away after 12 years. Her sister "Katie" had back surgery just after Christmas this past year and is...

    DIY Automotive Painting...noob inside!

The wife and I want to get our '96 Miata re-painted this year. I got a quote from my painter (he did the stripes on the Mustang in my avatar) and it's more than we would like to spend. I'm not saying he's too high because I'm sure at a body shop it would be even more. He does great work, but...

    Gas logs (manual override?)

With the impending ice storm here in eastern NC I'd like to know if there is a way to manually override the gas logs I have in my fire place. Right now there is a switch for the gas valve and another for the blower fan. In the case of a power outtage, is there a way to open the gas valve manually?

    Capacitor Polarity HELP!

I'm sitting here looking at a start capacitor and a run capacitor for my lift (symptom indicates one is bad) and for the life of me I cannot find any marks to distinguish the anode from cathode. The terminals are exactly the same size and shape also. WTF? Any ideas on how to tell?
