Look out Knipex, here comes ICON!

A pair of actual Knipex pliers with the Snap On name isn't a patent violation.

Anyone here build a fallout shelter?

Not to nitpick. The first atomic bomb, also known as "Little Boy" was a uranium bomb. It was a "gun type" of bomb. Essentially, a really big shotgun launched a slug of enriched uranium into a cylinder of uranium (with what might be called 'one hell of an interference fit'). When dropped on...

Anyone here build a fallout shelter?

A container full of bananas will set off the radiation detectors at a port. The most radioactive food you can buy are Brazil Nuts. Anything with potassium in it, including potassium supplements, will contain small amounts of the radioactive isotope of potassium. Granite countertops are...

Look out Knipex, here comes ICON!

At least it's made in Taiwan and not China.

For the most part, SK for chrome sockets, Sunnex for Impact.

Who's actually broken Chrome sockets with an impact?

Saw a guy have one go, once. It split, then pealed a thick slice of flesh off his hand (leaving it hinged on one side). He was off work for two months, and in PT for months after.

New Lug Nut Sockets - Merrick Tools

It was a very small shop, and thus I was the front desk. This is how we did it. Car comes in for an exhaust leak. You raise it up and it's the pipe to manifold, but you see it's rusty as hell. So, when I write the estimate, I tell the customer, "The studs look pretty bad. We can try to remove...

New Lug Nut Sockets - Merrick Tools

Where the hell do you work? If a bolt looked iffy, we called the customer to let him know he might be in trouble. We'd tell him we'll do everything we can to save the situation, but if it breaks, it's going to cost him, then leave it up to the customer to decide what he wants to do. On older...

    Catastrophic air compressor explosion *warning*

I think it started on the seam from fatigue, then propagated away from it. Weakened by rust, and fatigued by too many expansion cycles, it finally let loose. I'm no engineer, though.

I agree (y) (and I sad that in my next post, too).

    Catastrophic air compressor explosion *warning*

Watching the video, I don't see any rust. A vertical seam going to be a flex point and eventually, it will crack along the weld. I do agree, the fact it needed repair meant it was time to replace it. Like you said, "The take home message is still the same. Compressed gassed can be dangerous...

    Catastrophic air compressor explosion *warning*

It failed at the seem, not at the repair (crappy or not). I think it was just run past its lifetime.

The Truck Tool Equivalents Thread - Gathering Data

Agreed, and Cornwell has even more. Still, Snap On is headed that way. They have to in order to compete. At least the Knuckle-Savers are made in Taiwan and not China. Know who makes them?

The Truck Tool Equivalents Thread - Gathering Data

MAC makes all their own hardline (sockets, ratchets, etc). MATCO means MAC Allied Tool Company. MAC Allied was the portion of MAC Tools that made the boxes and brought in the tools sourced from outside vendors. They split back in the late 70s or early 80s as I recall. All tool companies...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

No pics, but I replaced the motor mounts and the driver's side valve cover gasket on my wife's car ('98 E320). Washed the oil off the outside of the engine and changed the oil and filter. Tomorrow I have to put the hush panel back on the underside (left it off to let the all the washed off oil...

Getting ignored from the tool truck guys

Maybe I wasn't clear, but I didn't say he ate the warranty, I said he ate the costs associated with the warranty (he eats the shipping, for example).

Getting ignored from the tool truck guys

Yeah, as a tech, I loved spending my time searching for the information needed just to buy the tool I needed to finish a job. It was great. The customer's car didn't get done in time, I didn't get paid for my time, the next customer couldn't get his car worked on because I was spending that time...
