    Me surveying in 1981 with a TM20C theodolite ca early 1970's and beetle top mount distance meter 1975? Now retired, but I wish I still had this equipment and the older early 1900's transits I used a couple times.

    Old fashioned

    I have several white wooden rulers like OP's . Always in my work pouch when I was a surveyor. Now in my woodworking. Been using them for close to 60 years. Never considered them old fashioned, but maybe they are. But my Stanley 68 is old fashioned compared to the new white folding rules.

    Pliers; How Many Is Too Many?

    Let's see. I have many pliers in my workshop, some in my Jeep toolkit, some in my truck, some in the basement, spares in some assorted toolboxes. But I think I need some more. A person should have pliers everywhere that they think they may be needed.

    Something as small as this, I would probably clamp the rim joist in place temporarily , then nail the joists to it, leaving toenailing for last.

    Do your last paragraph - build the walls, then rim joists and joists above that. Just like if you were going to have a conventional 2nd floor. No need for joist hangars. rim joists and joists are toe nailed to the top plate. Plenty strong. And put plywood on top for storage if you have room up...
