Hot water heaters for radiant heating

I think a lot of it has to do with the temp of the returning water and how much water is sitting out in the PEX (I know it's circulating, just trying to simplify the concept). If you have 40 gallons in the tank and 60 gallons sitting out in the PEX with a significant temp drop in that return...

Hot water heaters for radiant heating

Some of the info looks like it was updated, like he mentions the 300 foot PEX limit being based upon the boiler tech available at the time and a couple of the 'snake oil' slab insulation products that are on the market now. Just adding it to my growing collection of links and absorbing the info...

Hot water heaters for radiant heating

Thanks again, Brian, for the links, photos, info, and taking the time to talk to me over the phone. I did a bunch more research last night and stayed up until about 1 AM playing with LoopCAD. What got refreshed in my memory last night is that I had seen it mentioned almost in passing in a couple...

    eliminating a 3 way switch

^^^What he said^^^ I did this with a couple of switches in my house when we moved in last year. You can find the wiring diagrams and sepcifics on how to ID the wires by Googling...try something like 'convert 3 way light switch'. That's how I got the info needed. Let me know if you're unable to...

Hot water heaters for radiant heating

Wow...that's scary!! I'm researching now and live in Mid-Ohio too just across the reservoir from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. I'm all electric as well (just switched back off of my standby generator a few minutes ago due to a power outage) and the fear of a monster electric bill concerns me. I...

    3way wired lights

IIRC there's two slightly different ways to wire up a 3-way. You should be able to easily find instructions with diagrams by Googling...found plenty of info months ago when I was reworking several of the lights & switches in my house.

    concrete floor questions,stones,insulation,etc.

I'm in this stage of my building planning right now and have been digesting a good bit of info over the past few weeks. Here's what I've gathered: 1) Vertical insulation (up the side of the slab, is a must do) 2) On a smaller building, you can go either way underneath the slab...insulate it or...

    Hanging Lights in Steel Building

Perfect...I was just about to post the same question. Thanks for the info.

Question regarding conduit size and top plate framing

That's excellent!! I think I'm going to call my power company and see if they'll do the same for me before I go and start digging trenches and drilling holes.

    Sizing a Generator

That gets old *real* fast...and expensive. It's fine for a brief outage, but adds to the misery of an extended outage. What I ended up doing with the borrowed portable was gassing it up in the morning before I left for work (oh yeah...you gotta chain that puppy to something to deter theft)...

    Sizing a Generator

Use the various sizing charts (they're all over the internet...I looked at several and erred on the side of caution where they disagreed), the real world numbers from the tags on your intended appliances, and take a good, hard look at what you really need/want to have if you're down for a week...

hardiplank siding - adding exterior outlets

Ditto on Arlington...I've used a few of their products on my house to correct stuff done by the previous owners. Check Ebay once you know which part numbers you need...you can usually find someone with better prices than retail.

What wire for 100A feeder? Upgrade main to 200A?

Thanks for the info. Excellent link and good idea on contacting the inspector...he should be able to tell me what he'd be looking to see run. The electrician seemed like a nice guy...he hung around and chatted for a bit after the contractor left (that's how I know he doesn't have any work right...

What wire for 100A feeder? Upgrade main to 200A?

Anybody?? Did I offend the electricians by not wanting to pay one for the grunt work portion of the job?

Simple question on a Dimmer Switch :-)

Ditto on the remotes. You can find them new or slightly used for far less on Ebay. When we bought our house last year, the PO had installed ceiling fans in the eat-in kitchen and all four bedrooms, but you had to use the chains to control them. I bought remotes for all of them off Ebay for...

What wire for 100A feeder? Upgrade main to 200A?

Oops...I goofed...I have 150A service in the house (main is in my office), so scratch the whole 200A panel aspect of this. What's the recommended wire for my run? I know #3 copper, but don't know any designation beyond that.

What wire for 100A feeder? Upgrade main to 200A?

I'll check into that, Stuart. I could do the whole thing myself (a buddy and I installed my standby generator), but don't want to risk running afoul of the codes and my buddy is working down in Texas now and I wouldn't want to bother him with this on one of his short trips back home. With the...

What wire for 100A feeder? Upgrade main to 200A?

The work and expense for that would be financially prohibitive. My power comes off of a pole in the edge of the woods downhill/north from the house east of the well and the house...that's why my entrance & panel are on the east side of the house. I'd probably have to go west across the front...

What wire for 100A feeder? Upgrade main to 200A?

What wire for 100A feeder? I have a 150A main in the house and bought a 125A sub to install in my yet to be built detached shop. I'll be running radiant floor heat at some point in the shop as well as a lift and a 220V MIG plus the usual lights, power tools, etc. The main is on the east wall...

    Interior walls for steel building?

Excellent...that's along the lines of what I was thinking for coverage, don't need to finish the entire height of the walls or even all of the walls. I'll probably just do the back wall and one sidewall.
