    Today's thrift store goodness

I was so busy looking over the piles of junk in the thrift store today that I didn't notice this beauty sitting over in the junk furniture section among some old beat up luggage. My wife gets credit for this one. Picked it up for $7. It's a vintage Kennedy 520 machinist's box. Missing 2 drawer...

    What is this tool???

Bought this today at a thrift shop for 2 dollars just because it looks old and interesting. But what the hell is it???

    Need handle for adze?

So I was at the scrapyard about 2 weeks ago and picked up a trunk load of weird stuff. Stuff like an old aluminum outdoor beer sign from a demolished convenience store and a big safety hook/pulley from a crane. The thing I'm working on now is what I believe is an adze. It's in good shape and is...

DEWALT DW2045 Magnetic Bit Tip Holder problem

Hopefully this has happened to someone here and you figured out how to fix it! I have a bit stuck in this thing and it's not coming out. Not even using a vise and a 24" pry bar! The problem is that the bit retention spring has somehow slipped and it sitting on top of the bit. Anyone else?

    Hex/Torx bit

I was looking at the Craftsman thousand dollar mechanic's set and comparing what it comes with to what I own. The only thing I don't have is a set of hex and torx drivers for my ratchets. I think I'll get a set. Can you guys tell me what brand it is that lets you cut off a standard hex wrench...

    Tool for drilling glass?

My wife wants to make some nite lights out of empty liquor sample bottles like these: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/385480049327864621/ How do you drill/cut out the bottoms? What do I need to buy? Thanks!!!

Wilton Bullet Vise vs Angle Grinder deathmatch

A cautionary tale. If you have a weak stomach, stop reading now! Let this be a lesson to all. Never give an angle grinder to someone who is flagrantly incompetent. And if you do, stick around to supervise! I'm not too worried though. I mean, Schiller Park Wilton Bullets are a dime a dozen...

OK how do I sell sockets?

My father-in-law was a tool dealer for about 30 years. Nothing too expensive or anything to get excited about. We sold 99% of his old stock a couple of years ago. Yesterday I found a box full of sockets. I put together a set of just about everything for my son. Very cool! But I have a weird...

Craftsman wrenches changing in my store

Seems like the sets have all been made in China for a long time. But if I wanted a single wrench or needed a warranty exchange, the individual ones were still USA made. Well, not anymore. Made in China singles started to be stocked as of last week here. You can spot them by the white tags on...

How do you attach tools to power cords?

So my OLD angle grinder finally died. I got a half price deal on a new DeWalt and it works fine. I was happy to see the box said "tool-less" for changing stones/blades. I wa sick of using that spanner wrench! But it's NOT tool-less! It takes a 6mm hex key! Grrrr! I've already lost 2 of them...

    proto 5249 ratchet question

I got one today at the pawn shop for pretty much nothing. The chrome and everything is PERFECT! It's squeaked and felt awful though. So I took it apart and cleaned it and lubed it. It's as good as new! Amazing condition! But the 2 screws that hold it all together don't fit flush. They stick...

    What is this weird tool?!!

I got this tool for free from my dad. But I only get to keep it if I can figure out what it is. It's been driving me crazy all week. Dad thinks it's hilarious and reminds me all the time that I'll never know as much about tools as he does. And he's right. The only clue I got is that he say's...

    Identify this tiny, tiny vise!

Got this for literally nothing today at the pawn shop. It's only half of the vise. But I think it's kinda neat and maybe one day I'll be able to fix it. Before I make a new part, I'd much rather try to find the other half. But I can't do that without knowing what it is. Sooooo, does anyone...

    Today's pawn shop finds...

I had a half hour to kill, so I stopped in the local pawn shop to dig through their "bulk tool" bins. I call them the scrap and **** bins. :) THOUSANDS of sockets in there right now! And tons of broken junk. But here's what I managed to haul away. It's not much, but keep in mind I paid only 3...

    Monthly sale at ACE Hardware

Not a bad flyer this month! I got a couple of 7" vise-grips for $4.99 this morning. Irwin 6" quick grips are a steal at $4.99 as well. A few other good deals this month...

    The OTHER kind of M18

I am needing an M18 clevis pin for one of the grab hooks on my 5/8" chain. They workers let it rust, and since it couldn't turn, it wore out pretty badly. Took me a week just to extract it from the hook! Seems like every hardware store sells M16 and M20 bolts, but only one even has an M18 bolt...

Need advice on selling some chain...

I bought an entire drum of brand new 5/16" grade 80 (made in the USA!) chain this week. I was really just looking to buy 20-40 feet of it, but I got a deal on CL I couldn't refuse. So I'm planning to sell a bunch of it to make back my money, essentially getting mine for free, hopefully. :) I...

Kinda cool scrap yard find this morning...

Well, it's cool to me. Maybe not so much to you. Let's see!.... I was doing some charity work this morning and delivering some furniture. I was within a mile or so of my favorite scrap yars, so I decided to see if anything cool way lying around. Not much goodness today, except for a 10-foot...

New thing I guess I'm collecting...

Seems like every time I go to the scrap yard I pick up a couple of hooks for my chains. Usually 1/4" up to 3/8" stuff with clevis pins. Slip hooks and grab hooks are both good to me! The reason is that you just can't find any still made int he USA anymore. Even the pricey high test stuff says...

    What drill do I need?

So I use the M18 drill and impact driver pretty much every day. I also have a cheap HF (11 bucks with coupon!) drill I use when I don't have enough batteries. But once in a while I get a job that requires more. Last month I had to drill some concrete for rebar. Impossible with a regular drill...
