    Impact vs Regular Socket

I too have used many a chrome socket on many an impact, never had one "explode" although I have cracked a few 3/8' drive sockets that way. Just don't hold the socket while you use it, peeling chome will slice you wide open and a cracked socket will shred your hand.

What Brand Impact Sockets Do You Use?

Mostly HF, but a couple kobalt, snap on, napa, and proto. The HF I've had for about 12 years of constant abuse with 1 lost and 1 broken in that time. The others I either snagged at a pawn shop, bought for a specific purpose or to replace my 2 missing HF. I don't use HF swivels though, for those...

    Time Lapse Camera

One of my point and shoot cameras has a recurring timed shutter on it, I cant remember if it's the cheapo Kodak or the Nikon. But I have used it several times when storms were passing near me to get some pretty cool shots. It has several settings from a few seconds to something like every 10...

Re: Best Tire Changer to Buy?

Re: Best Tire Changer to Buy? +1 for anything that says coats on it. You pay a little more than a ranger, but parts are widely available and the machines are tough/dependable.

    lathe purchase opinions

I'd go with the grizzly, they are the same lathe but the customer support from grizzly is far better. My dad bought a shop fox about a year ago at auction that needed a few parts, shop fox would not sell him the parts-they said they only sell to retailers and referred him to a few retailers, of...

    goofy handtool drive system

Matco Special Forces Socket set, I stupidly bought one when I was young and dumb. It works pretty well for a few applications, but never recouped the investment. And it is now obsolete and they do not have any support for the set any longer. I wish I could find someone to take it off my...

    My little brother is awesome

It's nothing special, just something I cooked up in the garage to free it up, some used engine oil, a little marvel mystery, and a dash of gasoline. Not ideal but I didn't have anything else in the garage (all my good chemicals stay in my side locker at work,) but it did a nice job of cleaning...

    My little brother is awesome

So today I got off work and went to my younger brothers house to help put a leveling kit on his truck. While there I was kicking around his garage looking for a hammer when I found a rusty old napa nh47 ratchet, a nice napa nh55 breaker, and 2-3/16 and 2-3/8 napa 3/4" drive sockets. I asked...

    Metric Talk: Most uncommon size

9, 11, and 20 are the LEAST used in my box. 9 I use on occasion, usually when installing trailer harnesses as some of the plug brackets come with 9mm head fasteners. 11mm for steering shaft pinch bolts on GM, and 20mm I've only ever used on gm fuel filters. I used to use 5.5mm all the time...

Which fluke for a auto tech student?

Fluke 88 has treated me well for 12 years now and still going strong, although most of the technicians I've worked with have had fluke 77's, it is a pretty good one too and can be had for under $200 online. I would probably have a 77 if I hadn't made an amazing pawn shop find on the 88 kit for $125.

What's a good diagnostic upgrade from an Innova?

With a primarily gm stable I'd also recommend a Tech 2, it's an amazing tool that absolutely cannot be rivaled for gm by anything aftermarket, and they have come down quite a bit on the used market. If you want something that will go beyond gm, then either a solus or autenginuity bundle would be...

Who carries a leatherman multi tool?

I've carried a sideclip (discontinued now) off and on for the last 10 years, it's great but working back in the shop full time I rarely have a need for it. When I worked on the ranch however it was indispensable. I also have a SOG, the pliers are compound leverage and work great, but it is...

    Scanner

If you are spending the money do it right the first time and get one with good bi-directional coverage. You will regret it otherwise, if you are looking for something to just pull some codes and look at some pids then grab a less expensive one, something from otc's lower end or an actron or...

    Ratchet Straps in Tool Box

I keep a couple in my box at work. Use them for seating beads on tires, holding misc stuff out of the way, holding transmissions on the jack, and they are great when doing intake gaskets on gm 3.1 & 3.4 v-6's for rolling the engine forward and holding it there. Tons of other uses but those are...

Tools Required for Import/European car tech (steering, suspension, brakes)

When the boss man tells you to fix it then you fix it or roll your box out, and my box is happy where it is. Most of the euro stuff we see are refurbs for our used car department, or ones we sold that the customers return for us to service and/or repair. We do not sublet any repairs except...

How to protect your tool box with high tech

Hook a small battery powered fence charger to your box, it's just a mild shock but enough to make someone think twice the next time. I know it's risky in our litigious society but in the area I work it would fly just fine, no sympathy for thieves in a small town.
