You can move a Bridgeport by yourself, but ...

You're a braver man than I am. I used a floorjack and a dolly to move the Leblond, but it's several hundred pounds lighter than the Bridgeport. Even so, I was uncomfortable with how tippy the lathe was on the floor jack, which substantially raised its center of gravity. I have a perfectly good...

You can move a Bridgeport by yourself, but ...

It will really kick your ***. Moved this mill 35 feet the day before yesterday, using pipe rollers and a 4 foot pry bar. Had to rotate the mill 90 degrees to start, negotiate one right angle turn, and back it into the corner. Whew! The 1" pipe rollers are beat to dickens. This quick and...

Yet another reality check: cost of steel plate.

Thanks, all; this is really helpful. There a scrap yard not far from me in Gloucester. I'm going to swing by there on Monday and see what they've got. I already have a nifty steel bench frame (Navy surplus), so all I need is a top and casters. My brother has a 1" top plate, which is pretty...

Yet another reality check: cost of steel plate.

Hi, all, I realize how great are the variations in prices across the country, but can anyone give me some idea what I should expect to pay for a 36"x72" sheet of .5" steel plate. There's light surface rust, but no pitting. I'm thinking of building a welding table, but want to guesstimate the...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Re: what did you do in your garage today? Well, you did ask for it. The mill came from a retired Navy submarine machinist who's upgrading to a variable speed. He bought it from a shop that manufactured parts for boomers back in the day. It's dirty and I'm starting a cosmetic degreasing and...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Re: what did you do in your garage today? Unloaded my "new" '56 Bridgeport mill. It's amazing what a couple of determined guys can do with a rollback, some pipe rollers, and 2200lbs. of cast iron, but I'm feeling it right now.

Suggestions for moving a Bridgeport mill

Moderator, if this is in the wrong place, be free to move it. Is there anyone in the Tidewater region of Virginia (Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News or Gloucester) who can offer any aid or advice in regard to moving a BP milling machine from Portsmouth to Gloucester? The weight of the thing is...

Haven't moved it into the shop yet, but bought it on Sunday. Naval subcontractor used it to build boomers. Chandos

Deal or no deal on this Lista?

Someone here suggested a rough rule of thumb of about $50 a drawer. I've paid that much once or twice (and never more), but more often less, and I've got seven of them. I count five drawers and some very expensive casters. You can do the math. All best!

finally getting a bridgeport.. what should we get for accessories?

I am actively looking for a mill. Would you mind telling me approximately what you paid for this little gem? Cheers! Chandos (who just dropped $2000 on a LeBlond 13x38 Regal with a lot of tooling).

1946 Delta Wilmaukee Band saw, worth the price?

At that price, fork the money over instantly. It's an excellent saw (a riser will increase the vertical cutting capacity) and parts are comparatively easy to come by. Youl could not replace it with an equivalent saw for less than several hundred dollars, and even then, you'd be getting...

Items you upgraded after realizing how much you used them

Another vote for air compressor, but, then, I never replace anything without upgrading it, within reason, of course.

    I want a drill press

Can you tell me who made the enclosure for your VFD (a link would be great)? Is it sealed, and, if so, have you had any problems with cooling? Many thanks! Chandos
