    Biggest bench vise ever made?

I've posted this already, but not in this thread. Starrett Athol 926. This thing weighs about 250lbs. Paid $200 for it with the stand.

    Plastic dip on boots

I suggest barge cement and old inner tube, but you'll never get the color selection. Cheers! Chandos

    Show us your arbor press!

I've got one of these, too; a CL pickup from several years ago. I confess that I wish I had a bigger one. The "0" has been great for working on motors (it's makes short work of removing bearings) but is a little too light for some of the things that I'd like it to do. Cheers! C

    Shop/garage clothing

I've been pretty pleased with the Schmidt brand from Tractor Supply; they fit well (I'm 6'4" and thin so this matters) and seem as durable as the Carhartts that I also own. They also seem to be perpetually on sale. I live in insulated coveralls during the winter, whether in the shop or not. I...

    Show us your drill press

My most recent acquisition. Canedy Otto 10" DP and Boyd DP quick release vise. Cheers! Chandos

Help writing a spec for a tankless water heater

I installed a Rinnai tankless a few years ago with a circulating system based on a small electric point of use water heater and a thermostatically controlled Grundfos circulating pump. I'd done a partial remodel (added a full bath) and went ahead and ran the pex to all the outlets in the house...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The mother of all vises? A recent CL acquisition (as of this afternoon): Starrett Athol 926. The vise is in extraordinary condition. No repairs, dings, misalignments. Original paint intact under the grime. PO pulled it out of a storage locker that he'd won in an auction. Noticed it when I...

Rivets for attaching Snap On stainless steel trim

If it is in fact a drive screw, use a dremel to cut a slot in the head and back it out with a screwdriver. Cheers! Chandos

    What color metal roof?

Green or red are, in my view, the only proper colors for a metal roof. I see a lot of silver in the mid-west, which also looks pretty cool, but of it were up to me, I figure out some shade of the first two that worked with the building/setting. This is an opinion grounded entirely in taste...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Re: what did you do in your garage today? Third day of trying to extract oil stains from a badly made concrete floor where I need to level it before laying down the RaceDeck--at the same time trying to frame in a new door for the shop--not a single right angle, non standard dimensions. Oh joy.

    The RoboReel Again...

Hmmm. We have a choice between the views of a guy who paid hard cash for one and had a miserable time of it, and a guy who got one free, who likes it a lot. What's to balance here, really? Maybe a dozen or so reviews might tell us something, but I can't think of a dozen people, myself...

What do you use dead blow hammers for?

FWIW, I picked up a couple of Northern's medium dead blow hammers the day before yesterday to help bang out a sheet metal cabinet. The worked wonderfully, and have a decent, quality feel to them. I can't remember what they cost, but they were pretty inexpensive. CHeers! Chandos

    The Securall Experience.

Dragged home a 60gal Securall safety cabinet the other day to store solvents and other combustibles. The thing is new, but shows shipping rash. I bought it surplus. For the jollies, I dropped Securall a note asking whether touch up paint (red) were available. Their customer support was...

Harbor Freight 1-1-13 25% off single item coupon

Interesting. I bought one of these on Dec. 20 from the site using a 20% coupon. It arrived at the door for $183 all out. I'm glad I grabbed it when I did, though I probably won't set it up until the spring.

Looking to purchase a Drillpress for a homeowner

I've mentioned before that my Jet, a fifteen-year old Delta knock off, is an excellent floor standing drill, and if I were to confront the same decision now, given what I knew then, I'd make exactly the same choice. I'd at least keep it in the mix. I know nothing about what Jet's producing...

Looking to purchase a Drillpress for a homeowner

Now that's a drill press. Cross-slide vise, foot control, all the bells and whistles. If one of those pops up within range, then I'll have 4 DPs! Can I ask what you got it for? Cheers! Chandos

Looking to purchase a Drillpress for a homeowner

I know this thread reached a sensible conclusion, but all this talk about DPs got me excited. I know that this isn't everybody's cup of tea, but I bought this today from a seller on CL. It's a Canedy-Otto dove-tail machine drill dating to the 20's or 30's. The PO had the motor overhauled...

    Compressor Restoration-Final Assembly

Did you fabricate the air lines or are they original? If you replaced them, can you provide a source? I've got a Champion R-15 two stage of about the same vintage and cooling fins on mine are a bit battered. Beautiful job on this rebuild! Chandos
