    Exterior door jambs for dummies

Hey Jim - this is the door I'm hanging: The dark green with the hand-carved lead motif is the outside. Too bad it's only going on a shop! But it's got tons of character.

    Exterior door jambs for dummies

So, this garage project has been a series of firsts for me: first time framing an entire building myself, first time managing multiple contractors on a (very loose) schedule, first time renting equipment to fix work done by a contractor (not the last I'm sure)... Now I'm faced with another...

    Small shop/garage build in Arizona

It's a weird calculation: if it is in the back 1/2 of the property, the easement is the height of the building + 5' I think? If it's in the front half its more, which is why I had to get a variation. I am not a city planner, consult the appropriate authorities before building haha!

    Flat roof repair

AZ Pete, Sounds like you have what I have on my new roof, a rubber rolled roofing that has a asphalt/like cap sheet. Mine was installed in two layers, both peel and stick: a bottom rubber later that the flashings get applied and patched over, then the second cap later is applied over...

    Small shop/garage build in Arizona

Gilbert is known to be pretty stickler on the code; I found the process a bit tiresome but the people I worked with were very professional. I had to get a variance from the city for the location of the building, but that was the worst of it. The larger hassle for me has just been learning about...

    Small shop/garage build in Arizona

Also, after discussing it with the lead guy, I'm moving my panel from the outside to a recessed interior panel. Labor and parts costs even out, and I'm happy not to have to go outside and through a gate to check the panel.

    Small shop/garage build in Arizona

The electricians have been awesome so far, very responsive to my questions, suggested improvements to some of the lighting layout even. They spent some time talking out issues with the garage door installer (my ceilings are a bit low due to zoning height restrictions). Good guys. So far I...

    Small shop/garage build in Arizona

Is it wrong that I want to play hooky from work today so I can just sit and watch the electricians rough in?

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Did final rearrange and cleaning for the electricians to show up in the morning. Kicked up a cloud of dust and triggered an asthma attack, so that sucked. Glad to have things moving along though.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

What did you do "IN" your garage today? Outlaw, that's a way to use them - these came from a fencing company that had moved and left a bunch of old steel and shelving on site. New owner is selling it off and said I could come back in a few weeks to pick through the scrap steel (woo)...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

What did you do "IN" your garage today? Not exactly "in", but went to pick up some storage shelves today. Looked all wood in the CL post, turned out that had a complete 1.5" steel tube frame (bonus!) but also meant they weighed a ton. Guy used a forklift to put them on the truck...

    Small shop/garage build in Arizona

Hey folks, Today I spent some time framing out the inside of the garage doors in preparation for the stucco contractors coming tomorrow: Foam and chicken-wire lath is stacked in the shop, waiting for an early start! Still waiting to get on the electrician's schedule.

Prep for garage doors - stem wall in the way?

Yep - I'll be padding it out with one set of flat 2x4s, then taking the flat 2x6s down to the floor.
