    Electrical grid question

They do! I have 3 poles on my property, the one at the street, one midway between my shop and the street and one near my shop where the transformers are located. All were originally installed in 1967 when Dad built the shop. The city electrical utility replaced them all last summer based on...

Multiple thermostat failures on newly installed furnace and a/c.

Update: Wire was replaced, along with another fuse and thermostat. Ran fine for awhile but I think only in cooling mode. It's my daughter's house so taking her word for it. When heat was needed, blew another fuse. Company owner came out and checked current draw every where and found...

    L- shaped Addition... Roof Framing

I've done a few of these. The end of the new 'short' rafters that meet the old deck and 2x8 are cut with a bevel angle matching the old roof pitch ( I think a 4/12 matches a 20deg bevel for instance) and a reverse angle to the ridge cut.

That's what I've always encountered too.

Multiple thermostat failures on newly installed furnace and a/c.

Actually the first failure was a battery powered unit. I'm not sure it actually failed because I replaced the batteries and it worked overnight, but was dead the next day. Didn't try another set of batteries, just replaced it. Probably should have tried new batteries first. I suspect that...

Multiple thermostat failures on newly installed furnace and a/c.

Apologies for posting a non-garage question. But, it could be a garage furnace. It's my daughter's system. Installed late last summer. First, the original battery powered thermostat failed, found bad batteries and changed them. Dead next morning. Replaced thermostat with new smart...

Plumbers putty vs 100% silicone for Kitchen sink in rental

I've never seen a rubber seal between the sink drain and the sink opening, only at the bottom. Putty on top.

    Top N Bond before epoxy?

Maybe invest in a needle scaler for the divots. May not get all the paint but at least it will be roughed up for a mechanical bond. And paint them with a cement adhesive then let it get tacky before the top and bond. It is only 20-25 bucks a gallon, you'll have a lot left to mix the top...

Stop roll pins from walking out?

Use a ground down pin punch in the pin's hole to expand the roll pin. Should increase the tension without making it impossible to remove if needed. Remove it and do this on a hard surface of course.

    Another Porch Rafter Span Question....

Guess I wasn't clear as I meant to say I wouldn't use PT lumber for rafters but substitute a higher grade fo KD material.

    Another Porch Rafter Span Question....

Another question regarding the use of treated material. It is almost never found as kiln dried after treatment and this will warp badly. Locally at least it is ungraded and most seems to be #3 at best. And last, it is protected from water and shouldn't need treatment. #2 kiln dried SYP...

    Doerr 2hp 3ph electric motor

I've never seen an electric motor with a non-standard bearing. Should have number(s), usually found on the edge of the outer race. Of course, I've not seen every motor either.

    Source for sheetrock bullnose end?

Paint will stick to PVC fine. That tile edging from Lowes linked above is often used to edge wall tile and is painted to match the wall. I have some on two walls of my shower. Tile extends outside the shower an dies into the wall.

Sill plate vs top plate size

I don't think those tables apply to his circumstance. Here is the prelude to them from the IRC. R404.1.1Design required. Concrete or masonry foundation walls shall be designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice where either of the following conditions exists: 1.Walls are subject...

Asphalt Drive and Concrete Trucks...Oh My

I've done some off-roading so airing up/down is familiar. But that is done to increase flotation, by reducing load per square inch, not to reduce total loading on the surface. Bigger footprint, shallower ruts. But total load never changes, so damage to hard surfaces, especially those not...

Truss Construction – Mending Plate from Scrap Zip Sheathing – Attic Storage – Code Compliance

Well I'm way to late for my opinion to matter but, the design seems fine to me. The execution however lacks. IMO (and experience) that type of splice in the ceiling joist is fine IF the 'mending plate' is long enough and thick enough with adequate fasteners. I've done similar but used 4ft...

    Solvent Remove Thick Automotive Grease

If it what I think it is, not just grease, but lots of imbedded dirt then more grease repeated over and over, the answer is no. At least none that I've found. Scrape, wire brush, diesel, wait then pressure wash. Repeat. Repeat 'til done to your satisfaction. That was the protocol I settled...

    Straightening Rafters on lean to

I think I see two definitions of a crooked rafter in the suggestions above. I mean some think they are bent horizontally, ( not parallel with each other), others visualize a vertical warp. Which is your issue? Pics would help. I suspect it is the lack of parallelism that is the issue...
