Advice for insulating unheated garage ceiling

The plumbing should be on the warm side of the insulation otherwise you may have freeze issues. Verify both the electrical & plumbing do not need work before encasing either in foam. The whole slab from the parking garage side is getting chilled so I expect insulating only the part under your...

    HOA vs HOME MECHANIC

I wish my HOA would call me when I leave the garage door open... happens occasionally on my way to work. Now, if I happen to be working around the house or in the garage with the door open... they can pound sand.

Help me decide between Gladiator bamboo or maple top workbench.

I have the maple one... happy with it. Being Canadian... I am partial to anything maple. Before someone tells me to hand in my man card... I have previously built several workbenches. I'm tired building workbenches... decided to buy this one... no regrets. The Gladiator is one solid...

    How to finish my workbench

My Dad's workbench has 1/4 Masonite on it as protection. He also painted the Masonite. He has been gone many years but that Masonite is still on it... and the top surface of the bench is pristine. It was built in the mid 50's. The Masonite; however, has acquired some "character".

    Changing your own oil. Savings?

I used to change my own oil. My current vehicle advises me of when an oil change is due. So far, this results in a yearly oil change... so I take it in and have them give it the once over. I have a 7 year / 75,000 mile warranty. If something happens to the engine I don't want to give them the...

    Stupid stuff in the garage

Woke up early one chilly morning at the cottage up north and wanted to quickly get the fire going so I could jump back into bed. Put some kindling then a coupla logs in. For good measure I soaked it all with Coleman fluid then shut the door on the stove while looking for matches. Found the...

    Need to build and outhouse

Start with the hole. At a cottage I once built an outhouse with a 6 foot deep hole... I kid you not. Needed a rope and bucket system to get the dirt out with someone on surface hauling it out... and a ladder for me to get out. If you dig that deep, be sure to line the hole to support...

How do you store petrol in your garage?

I have 2 gallons of mineral spirits in the garage stored in metal cans... and I don't even like that in there despite having my car in there with a full tank of gas. Guess I am paranoid after hearing about so many house and garage fires.

Garage Lights: CFL vs: T8's, Help Me Decide!

Ultimately, you have to decide what is best for you... however, I don't think doing a tally of the posts is a very good method to make that decision. Keeping an open mind, exploring all the options and keeping in mind your own personal criteria is the best way forward. Personally, I don't like...

Garage Lights: CFL vs: T8's, Help Me Decide!

I have 4 strategically placed electric outlets in the ceiling of my 20 x 18 garage. The original plan was to use those for plugin fluorescent fixtures. Until I get around to working on the garage I went with plug in adapters in the outlets that I can screw bulbs into and went with 4 - 100...
