    Show us your welding projects

Apologies if I've posted this before, I truly can't remember....but while we're doing the stool pic theme, here's mine. I got fed up with my ad hoc stool (shown in the background). It was an old office chair, with a piece of padded plywood bolted atop a steel extension. Insofar as it...

    But.....air tanks don't actually blow up......right?

My compressor is in my shop. The storage tank is behind the garage. "K" copper in between.

    Affordable Multiple Feature DMM

I stick with Fluke for all my meters for one reason & one reason only: Excellent fusing. When I mess up and set it for amps and try to check voltage (c'mon...admit it: we've all done it), that fast-fuse blows instantly. Ever seen a cheap meter hand grenade? I have. Not pretty. I had a...

    primeweld tungsten size

I use 3/32" up to 185A (water cooled). I use a 1/16" for small work, especially SS. I've never use an .040"...

also: do NOT use green (pure) on an inverter machine. It never works well. For me, all I use is "blue".....for absolutely everything.

Just for fun, if you are of a certain age- do you still have any of your first tools?

I'm 67....I have the Weller soldering gun that I got when I was 15, and I have a pair of needle-nose pliers that I got around the same time. Still use both. Craftsman metal-badged 6500 tool boxes...I have about a half dozen of them. One of them I got for my 13th birthday, but I don't know...

Don't use it, in the way, can't get rid of it

I have several trays sitting on the shelf. The dust is an inch thick; haven't touched them in eons. @Packard V8 Tell ya what: I'll pitch mine and you can pitch yours. Deal?

"NVD" (New Vise Day)...couple of questions

:) :) I've been a member here for 6 years and this is my first "YOU ****". I will wear this as a badge of considerable honor, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! I already wire-wheeled off the surface rust and hit it with 2 light coats of Rustoleum primer. The big question now is...

"NVD" (New Vise Day)...couple of questions

I'm really not a "vise collector"; I already have more than I need. But when a 1996 USA Wilton 1750 appears for $60, who can say "no", right? "Filthy" doesn't come close to describing what I bought...I got it from a auto mechanic's shop who's retiring & closing down. Cleaning his tools wasn't...

Question about the neighbor’s steel roof

I'm a big fan of open-ended questions. Like, "so when are they returning to finish your roof?" That should start quite the dialog... :)

    Unidentified Metal coating removal?

Slightly off-topic question: Will H3PO4 'burn' millscale off of hot-rolled steel? I know HCl will (I use it for that all the time), but it would be nice to be able to do so with something that's not an oxidizer. Anyone know?

    Caterpillar tool box paint code?

let me check.... I checked with "my guy", and he confirmed my understanding that the color has changed over the years. The '70s would have been some version of "Highway Yellow". Here's a chart that may (or may not!) help...

    Unidentified Metal coating removal?

Glad it's working for you.....but if it helps: Vinegar (acetic acid) that you buy in the grocery store is usually 5%. If you go to the big-box stores, you can buy 30%. It makes a huge difference.

cutting sheet metal sheet with a circular saw and a jig

I, too, have heard that a diablo blade can damage a "regular" (wood) circular saw, but so far, I've not experienced any issues. That said, I did NOT do this with my "good" circular saw...I bought a used B&D on CraigsList for $20. If the metal shards kill it, so be it. Circular saws on CL...
