It’s been a few years ago so I’m not sure exactly how far off they were. But I am certain it was well over 1/8”. I trashed the HF tapes after that and started getting other stuff as my free items.

I’ll question how good those previously free and now cheap tape measures might be. Few years ago I was using one at the miter saw while another guy measured and installed trim. Pieces weren’t fitting. My cuts weren’t off; his Stanley FatMax measurements were different from the HF free tape...

From my observation, that seems to vary from store to store. Most likely store or department manager’s choice? Best bet is to just ask a friendly worker what they do with them?
