Another option might be to use his own stock. Take up flooring inside closets, under vanities, etc. Replace the take up areas with new thin (by comparison) flooring, using layers of subfloor to match existing levels. Sounds like a challenging and interesting project. Post some pics, please!

I’m sure others with more expertise will respond, but I suggest you take a look at Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA grout. Lot easier to use than epoxy.
