    Arc of shame

This has to be the grandaddy of all arcs of shame. I zoomed in on the pic, and it looks like the original table broke off (at the arc of shame), a steel plate was bolted on, and same *****(s) kept drilling away. Too bad, as I could be a player. Still, at $150, I'm strongly tempted.

    Interior metal siding/wainscoting question

I just put up metal wainscoting in my shop. It's a little over 4' tall, looks good, and is spark-proof. If you've done this, how do you deal with the gaps where things like workbenches **** up to the metal? The ridges are about 3/4" tall, creating a series of spaces for small stuff to disappear...

Electric water heater indicator light wiring?

I have a 30 gallon electric water heater in my shop. I don't use it all the time, so I shut it off at the breaker. The problem is when I forget to shut it off at the end of the day, and it's wasting electricity. I figured I'd add an indicator light right by the door to remind me. Light on=...

    Leaky threaded pipe fittings

I've always had trouble getting threaded pipe fittings to seal, and now have a dilemma. I'm finishing the inside of the shop, and have a new external hose bib. Of course, the pipe fittings leak. I can fix it- eventually. Here's the problem: I know I'm going to be replacing the exterior siding...

    Surface conditioning tools?

I'm seeing ads for these things all over. They have a wide drum of abrasive, and are touted for jobs like stripping paint. Has anyone used one? In restoring my old pick-up, I'm finding that paint removal is the biggest problem. Chemical paint removers don't work like they used to. The truck is a...

    Progress!

Despite the blistering heat this summer, I am making progress on finishing the interior of my shop. Galvanized wainscoting rests on top of a PT 2X4, then pegboard, then white hardboard to the top. I did one section on another wall, but used J-channel to hold the bottom of the tin in place. Works...

    What's going on with R410A?

Yes, I know it's being phased out. I thought it would be by now. But- I'm in the market for a cheap mini-split for my shop, and brand new units are still 410A. In a way, that's good for me, because I already have three other units that are 410A, and I'm all set up to service them. What I have...

    Post mounted drill presses?

I've been seeing old post-mounted drill presses on FB. I'd like an old machine to tinker with, and the floor model camelback drill presses are too much money, and eat up too much valuable floor space. I have 4 posts to choose from, so I have a good set-up for one. I don't need it to drill holes...

    Thoughts on re-siding the barn

I built my barn about 14 years ago, and was on a very tight budget. It's a 28X48 gambrel, framed with 2X6's and sheathed with T1-11. That was the first mistake. The second one was painting it with very cheap red paint. Now, the T1-11 is starting to deteriorate, although it is still solid. I...

What to do with tools that just don't sell?

I'm in the process of a shop purge. I have a lot of tools that I just don't use any more, and at age 71, don't see me ever using. I've had good luck selling on FB Marketplace, but some things just aren't moving. I have a corded Milwaukee circular saw and SawZall. Lot's of nibbles, but no sale...

Look at this beast! Drill press

Good thing it isn't close by, or I'd be figuring out a way to get it home. Doesn't say who it's made by- any guesses?

    Stock storage- Vertical or mezzanine?

I'm totally gutting my shop to prepare for insulation and finished walls. I had put up a semi-temporary mezzanine that was 4 X 12 feet, hanging down from the ceiling. I had a bunch of lumber stored up there. I had to take it down to do the finish work, and I like the way the shop looks without...

    Painting 4x8 panels- Lessons learned

I'm in the middle of putting a ceiling up in the shop, so I thought I'd jot down things I've learned. Some I knew most of my life; others I figured out recently. I'm painting about thirty 4x8 foam panels. I'm putting two layers on the ceiling of the shop. The first layer needs no paint, so up...

    York 'bullet' vise?

I ran across an ad for a 6" York vise that looks sorta like a Wilton bullet. I've never seen one before- are they any good? At $250, it's a lot cheaper than what a Wilton would go for.

    New bathroom vanity project

Nothing fancy here; just a basic, functional vanity. When I was building our house 12 years ago, I was about out of money at the finish line. I had an old piece of furniture, and snagged a free faux marble vanity top off of a curb alert. The concept didn't work very well, and the crappy vanity...

Any idea who made this box?

I saw this interesting box on CL today. It has drawers on one end, and cabinets on the rest. One pic showed a metal cover that goes over the drawers, I assume to lock it. Might be an interesting restoration project.

    Minor assembly required...

This is a follow-up to my thread about using foam panels. I got an even better deal. I bought 60 2-1/4" thick 4X8 panels for $12 each! Now I just have to figure out how to get them on my ceiling. These panels are specifically for roofing, so they have some sort of a fiberglass-reinforced paper...

Making solid 'lumber' out of plywood

I'm building a custom vanity for our master bath, and employed the same methods I used for the kitchen drawers I made 12 years ago. Solid lumber is expensive, and prone to warp. I use 3/4:" cabinet-grade plywood instead. Of course, plywood edges are UGLY. I use iron-on edge banding, and it...

Why do vises crack like this?

I see a lot of old vises that are in OK condition, except for a lengthwise crack in the back of the moving part. They seem to split right down the middle. like this one. Repairable? Usable? Junk? The one shown is an old American Scale Co.

    Assembling foam panels?

I finally found sort of a deal on foamboard. The plan is to attach it to the ceiling trusses, then put tin over (under) it for a finished ceiling. Here's the catch- the foam panels are all 4X4X2-1/4". My thought is to put up a double layer, getting me close to R-25. I'm thinking about assembling...
