11b30b4's Vintage Classic Craftsman Drill Press Information Thread

BSWS, Is that drill being put in the living room or man cave because it is way too good looking to be stuck in a shop and get chips on it!

    Which blasting media

Do you have a vacuum hooked up to your cabinet? Although the media I use is dusty, the vacuum keeps it manageable. I use a small shop vac attached to the vacuum port on my cabinet.

Ground rods and wire for shop

I would also check the local building codes for their requirements. That would be the minimum you need to do.

Maybe the best woodworking solution is a metalworking solution

I have had some success bending pieces opposite the warp and clamping down for several days until they take a set. More of an art or trial and error process. Bend it too much and you can break the piece. Usually done this with unfinished raw wood.

    Which blasting media

What is the dual tube mod? I just bought a used cabinet and am using whatever Menards has. Works great on rust, is awful dusty and not enough time to determine how long it lasts. One mod I did is it needed a new viewing “glass”. I had some 1/4’ plexiglass and just cut the original out leaving...

    Craftsman Drill Press

On my Drill presses and all the ones I rebuild and resell, I add T bolt hose clamps below the head and on floor models below the table. Stronger than conventional hose clamps. They do hold. Ask me how I know!

Garage Framing Question - Where to divide the wall when framing? (Also, mistake advice)

My own opinion would move the break at least 1 stud to the right of the entry door. The doors are used every day and the frame needs to be solid. As for the angled wall studs, if the window will still fit, I would not worry about it. If you do adjust them use a sawzall parallel to the sole plate...

Sander was completely disassembled, all parts cleaned, repainted. Worn parts replaced. Fafnir bearings cleaned and regreased. New cord. Runs like new. Very heavy and solid, this sander won’t walk off your bench. Can send an 14 second video of it running. Asking $195.

    All Tool rebuild/restoration thread

Friend gave me this a few years ago. Finally got around to rebuilding it. No markings but people here tell me it’s a Hammond 400. It has a 36x4 belt. Must have had 4 coats of paint on it, but overall nothing was wrong with it. Didn’t have a fence and I fabbed up one. It will be going on the...

    All Tool rebuild/restoration thread

How about a thread to post pre and post pictures of tools you salvage, rebuild or restore. Any brand or type. I’ll start with a Craftsman wet grinder and I believe a Delta or Rockwell stand.

more efficient use of shelving space in garage to hold smaller items?

You would make my late Uncle John proud. As a kid I could go over to his work shop and ask for any size bolt or nut and he would go to the spot and get it. First thing I thought of when I saw your post! Unfortunately I did not inherit those organizational skills.

    Old Belt sander ID help

Friend gave me this belt sander a few years ago. It is horizontal and vertical, need to take out 2 bolts to change from h to v. Finally getting around to rebuilding it. Looks like a fence may be missing as there is a bolt in the area a fence would be. There is no name and it appears the base and...

    Battery terminal brushes

I put nickel never seize on my battery terminals and can’t remember the last time I needed to clean them. Had (still have) one like in the first post for the connector, but usually use a wire brush on the terminal post then put on the never seize.

    Show off your vintage lathe.

Went through about half the posts. Did you guys know lathes can be used on wood too? Did a cosmetic upgrade on the Craftsman lathe that I had for years and got the stand on market place and completely redid it. Shortened the stand and used the extra original wood from the stand for the drawers...

    Craftsman tool chest parts needed/question

The strip is from some stainless sheet metal I had. The bottom tab is 1/8” stock, 3/8” wide, the top tab is 1/16” stock, 3/8 wide. The hinge on top was a 1/4” bolt I drilled out. I inserted the strip/hinge assembly and closed the lid and scribed a line at the top of the drawers. The bottom of...

    Craftsman tool chest parts needed/question

Ended up making the drawer locking bars. Not much to look at but they function as should. For the lock I used one from our camper that I had when I upgraded the locks on that. Have one with a key if I decide I want it lockable. And yes, I kept the original lock. Made dividers for all three...
