Nice job. I have three stands made with 24.5 truck rims in the shop. I weld two rims together for more stability. Total of six rims for three stands.

Can you create/buy a swivel base for a vice?

Weld it on a 2, 3, or 4" hammer union. You can make a hammer union cheaply by welding pieces of round stock (I use rollers from large truck wheel bearings) to a black pipe union.

Cordless drills that don't ****, Chuck related

I've been able to replace my most used keyless chucks with keyed chucks. Those damn keyless always seem to slip, then back off when I most need them.

Hanging type shelves in shop, anyone done it?

I use "plumbers tape" for my hanging shelves. Screw or bolt into wood and bolt into metal. No welding. Amazing how much of a load that stuff will carry.

    Hex Female Drive Ratchet?

X2. Use to buy mine at the Gambles store. Late fifties, sixties. Still have a box full. Very tough tools. You could put a 24" crescent or pipe wrench with cheater pipe on adapter and not tear up socket.

Is a 1 ton crane sufficient for engine and transmission removal and installation?

I have the HF 2 ton collapsible. I have a 8' and 12' square tubing boom inserts and a ballast box welded to rear of picker. Use 18" sections of RR track for ballast. With 200 lbs.+ of ballast, I can remove/replace complete sbc with 6-8' of boom. I can set a 450 lb. welder in back of pickup with...

Anyone use Jet.com to purchase tools?

Well, Walmart bought Jet.com to compete with Amazon, so I would think the service would be excellent. I have not bought tools from a Jet, but have bought other items and am well satisfied.

    Welder advice

That's a great economical welder. In the sixties and seventies there was one of those in about every shop. I learned to stick weld aluminum on the D.C. Side of one of those, an ability I still use today in the field. You can't spool or tig when the winds blowing 20 mph.

Will a cheap AC stick welder be a benefit just to practice technique?

You'll probably be tested on a D.C. Machine. Maybe they'll let you stay late or use the machines at work on weekends to practice.

Lincoln Square Wave TIG 200. Experiences?

I have both Lincoln and Miller in the 175 amp range, both are about 15 yrs. old. Really prefer the Miller. I am not associated with Indiana Oxygen in anyway except I have been a very satisfied customer for years. I buy all Miller through IOC and my local welding supply shop says I'm buying...

    Plasma cutter consumables lifespan

I bought $400 worth of consumables when I bought my Miller cutter. My Lincoln before it ATE consumables. I had a half a dozen semi trailer king pins and plates to change in the field and didn't want to get caught short. That was 5 years ago and I'll bet I still have $350 worth of those...
