Need to fabricate an Aluminum Ladder

I built an aluminum ladder about 25 years ago out 1 1/2” schedule 40 pipe. Very sturdy and still in use. I have a tubing notcher for drill press. Just notched ( saddled is what we call it) the rungs and welded it up. Very simple.

Trying to decide if I want this tank

You know you can buy an ultrasonic thickness tester for around $100 that will work fine for compressor tanks and take the guess work out of it. My oldest compressor tank is 40 years old and the newest is about 10. I check them every year or so. Had to shitcan a 15 year old tank last year.

Threading 1-1/2" (1.5") galvanized pipe... best options?

I have hand Ridgid to 2” and power driven Ridgid 2 1/2” to 4” and HF to 2”. ( I’m old and can’t recall the Ridgid numbers right now) When threading under 2”, I use the HF. It’s lighter, quicker, and cuts good threads. Amazing tool for the money.

help please; Bishman bubble tire balancer

I have a similar balancer for truck tires. Used mainly on 11:24.5, but will go down to a 17” wheel. It just has a valve on the inlet. Air it up until tire/ wheel is supported, then close valve. It doesn’t leak off. Has button on side of valve block to release air, but we usually just unplug air...

    Anchoring an open carport?

Here’s the way I anchor sheds, carport, or what have you. I dig a 2’ hole with post hole diggers. I take a 30” piece of 3/4” or 1” all thread ( depending on structure) and weld scrap iron, old bolts, or whatever on about 20” of it. Drop it in hole and cement it with quickrete. I drill holes in...

Plumbing - Frost Proof Hose Bibbs?

If you have copper lines in the house don’t forget to use an insulated connection if silcock is galvanized. I made THAT mistake years ago. Took about five years for electrolysis to eat up connection and flood basement.

Teflon tape on compressor hose connections?

IMO tape is terrible. I was involved in a test of Teflon tape in late sixties. Total fail. You’ll seldom gall a thread with dope, but you can easily gall threads with tape.

    Radio antenna problem

I replaced all the fluorescent lights in garage with LED. Love them, but they caused terrible interference on both AM and FM radio if radio was plugged in on same circuit as lights. Still some AM interference on different circuit, but tolerable.

Painting a vehicle in a standard 2car garage

I’ve painted two cars, two pickups, and a cj jeep in a 1 car 12’x25’ garage. No problem. All above good suggestions. Hang plastic. I use box fans covered in damp dish towels. Can’t have enough light. I did have to paint my f350 longbed crewcab at my truck shop. It was just too long. You didn’t...

    Truck Shop Ideas...

I was in the trucking business from 1959 - 2017. Always did most of my own work. In my opinion a clean, bright pit is invaluable. You will find things when you roll a piece of equipment over a pit that you’ll never see laying on your back with you nose pressed up against a differential. Chafing...

What do you guys use to paint metal that is durable?

Anything that says “stops rust” on the can. I think they’re all oil based and so thick you can barely pour it out of can. I’ve found the flat and satin finishes much more durable than gloss. I buy those $10 hvlp spray guns at Harbor Freight. High acetone content will eventually plug tip on big...

What do you guys use to paint metal that is durable?

I use rustoluem. Bare metal, painted metal, rusted metal, and ect. Clean it and wipe down with rag/acetone. Cut paint 50%-75% with acetone where it will spray easily. Drys almost instantly and hard as a rock. Can redcoat almost immediately. 3-4 coats. Immediate dry and hard. Looks like powder...

    Pressure washer help

I have 25+ Honda 390’s at one time or another. The spark plug phenomenon is related to the resistor spark plug wire cap. Also, the aforementioned resistor can go bad, but it’s very rare.

    LED replacements for florescent tubes

I replaced 4 4’ light fixtures (8 bulbs) with led about a year ago. Absolutely love them. Instant on and much brighter. I like the white light so these are 5000k & 24 watt. Had to remove ballast and wire one end of fixture. Did it on ladder, about 5 min. per fixture. Bought off EBay about $7+...
