    The VISES of Garage Journal

Well, I believe you're like me, I have a soft spot for Rock island vises. When this 542-bx came available on FB last year I dropped everything to go get it (only 15 mins away). I can't remember what I paid but it was somewhere around 100. 225 seems steep to me, don't know if I'd pay that. But RI...

Craftsman 5198. Who made these awesome vises!!

yeah, I have zero reason to use it, it would look great in a couple of the 60's craftsman garages i've seen on here.

Craftsman 5198. Who made these awesome vises!!

It's a 4.5", the 5198 was the 5". It gets obviously an A for style but I give it a C in durability. Used properly I'm sure it would last forever, but compared to the 516x series made by Rock island, I have to give my Nod to those ones. I own a 5162 and 5163, and just feel they are a better vise...

5” Reed Vise - Dovetail Question

I like that idea of drilling, counterboring, and installing a socket head cap bolt into the nut. Probably Overkill but it's your choice. I've bought 2 Prentiss 21s now and ended up parting them both out, or scraping because I didn't do my due diligence.

5” Reed Vise - Dovetail Question

Not the end of the world, once totally apart and cleaned up, I would see just how far it goes along the nut. Looks like its only the very end from the pics. I would probably grind it a little bit and fill the crack with braze or some TIG time.

Congratulations on your new vise. Looks to be a very early Morgan Chicago. I'd be afraid to use that one! Welcome to the Morgan club (Morgan 150 is my regular user).

Looks like an unmarked model. Thats a part id number I believe, no relevance to dates or model numbers. For $40 I would own one too :)

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thats not even a nice Morgan. I live in morgan land here and 150s can be had for 100-150 but they're hard to find. 40s/45s/140s/145s are much more plentiful. I however love mine (Milwaukee 150) and its the only vise bolted to my bench at all times.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

You have a Prentiss 26 there. Look behind the swivel jaw, there may be some identification there. If not, a lot of prentiss vises were unbranded for sale at hardware stores (I believe). You have a real keeper there, besides a new handle it looks straight to me! Very desirable, the swivel jaw...

How to age a Prentiss #22 vise

Red is good. The grey/white letters look industrial and all business. Paid $150 for mine, 5-6 hour round trip. It's the original version with the model behind the swivel jaw on top. It's packed up in plastic for the winter or I'd post up a naked pic of it, and my famco 3 press is currently...

I had a 623 1/3x at one time. I believe the X might be replaceable jaws, but I never really found out. Maybe a transition model before they all had jaw inserts?

How to age a Prentiss #22 vise

Nice 22. I have mine that I picked up last year, came out of a WI paper mill. It's an older version but nice. I think im going black with it, when the weather gets nice, which I believe would have been the original color. They are beasts, congratulations on your find.

That's a nice 1C and Starrett too. I've seen swivel bases for those Starrett occasionally on eBay if interested. Nice to see a good trade work out! Just curious how/what carrier the 924 1/2 was shipped with?

    Reed 4C

Congratulations, you found one that many consider a holy Grail vise. Post it up in the main vise thread in general tools. I also have a 4C and it's a beast!

let's see your craftsman block grinders

Picked up this 1/2 commercial last weekend. Are the round tops older than the flats? The flat tops have more amps too, I have 2 of them also (1/2 hp commercial). Has anyone hooked them up to 220? Any difference? I set this one up with diamond wheels for tungsten sharpening. Light works, no...

    Show us your arbor press!

I picked up a Famco 3R a few months back with original stand. 4 ton, nice press. I figure if I need more I'll switch to my 20 ton hydraulic press. Didn't come with the pilot wheel And I love the ship wheels. Couldn't find any of those but I did find this old cast shut off wheel. Bored the center...
