Why isn't anyone using insulated panels?

My barn has some panels with T-111 on both sides and metal one side in the horse stalls. Went up in two days and it is now 27 years old with no issues.

Struggling with choosing a multi-purpose winch...

I have a 9000 Warn winch INSIDE a tool box at the front of the trailer. Also use a remote control and rope instead of cable. There is a 12 v battery that is always hooked up to a tender and is charged from the truck through the 6 pin connector. I also have a couple of ****** blocks in the...

For property tax purposes - is this "living area"?

After reading these posts, I’m glad I live in Durango! Our assessments arrived in the mail this week and several properties went up and a couple went down. I’m more interested in the mill levy as that will determine the actual property tax I pay.

Would you hire a contractor only with a handshake?

We have done new home construction and remodels in the low six figure area and prefer time and materials and we generally pay the subs directly. Colorado does not have a contractor licensing requirement.

    Shipping container/connex roofs

I welded tabs on both sides of each container and bolted 4X4's on with teco fasteners to locate the trusses.

    Shipping container/connex roofs

Why not use prefab trusses? That's what I did when I put a roof over these twenty footers in my avatar

Sprinkler winterization - leave sprinkler valves partially open during winter?

Two major systems with 13 stations on each one. Pulling water out of ponds with 220v pumps. In 25+ years, I can count on the fingers of one hand freeze damage to sprinkler headers. After the systems have been blown out, we drain the pumps and get ready for next year.

    Permits

Flying under the radar is all well and good until you go to sell. I looked at a place built by an “anti permit” guy and I offered 50% of the asking price due to what it would cost to bring it up to code. Didn’t buy it and its been on the market now for more than two years. Any time you go...

    Sea container shop

See my avatar. Will this be a permanent location for the containers? I have some storage above the containers and there are no issues with the heat. Mine has vents and a hardwood floor. These are 20 footers.

How to selling a house with a large garage

This is a very interesting thread. Lots of suggestions about selling to someone with a home business. Forget that if the zoning is purely residential. From a tax standpoint, the OP might consider the CT home as a second home to avoid CT income tax and retain the NC home. Too, using VBRO to...

The Tool You Don't Want to Need: First Aid Kit

I have good first aid kits in my garages. Since I used to have horses, I have a product called Wonder Dust that stops bleeding instantly and peroxide in a spray container. Nicked my knuckles on a table saw last week and both of these items were indispensable.

    4 Post Lift Shopping

Someone else posted a similar request for info and I was shocked at the current price of a Backyard Buddy! I paid less then $2000 for a BYB at a Goodguys show in Scottsdale almost twenty years ago. Now they're over $5000! https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=466255

So I hate to discuss this...

I have a Back Yard Buddy that I bought about 18 years ago. Over the years, I've moved it once, stored cars and never bolted it down. Unlike some lifts, the BYB has 4" X 4" posts with slots cut out. The fact that it is made in the USA was a factor for me.

Need info on one toilet DIY septic system.

Excellent choice. However, they are pricey and require 220v. I replaced one on my house boat with a Sun-Mar composting toilet for a around $1000. I'm on my third composting toilet and they are the greatest things since sliced bread. Have one in my shop right now.

    Negotiating construction costs?

My wife and I have done several 6 figure remodels and a high end house on a time and material basis. We pay the material bills with an agreed up on percentage mark up. Contractor submits the gross payroll total with an agreed up on mark up on a weekly basis and we cut a check and he handles the...
