    I'm not 100% sure but I think using the white/neutral as a hot (black in this case) for a switch only applies to switching a light fixture.

    Is that how the back wires were tied together? If they were I'd start checking all the electric in the house.     Did you use dielectrics where needed? The copper pipe touching any other than copper or brass? Wife using the pipe to hang coat hangers? Isolate the copper from dissimilar metals.

    Used Snap On KRA boxes (older are Canadian, newer are USA) are great and can be bought very reasonably.
