Can anyone ID this old rustbucket? Is it worth an attempt at cleaning it up?

Picked up a well-used Kennedy box for $10 today. When I removed the drawers, this was in the bottom. I think they're made of sheet metal.

I've had this thing for years. Don't know where it came from. No markings on it at all. It's about 7 inches long and the center piece adjusts the length. Anyone recognize it?

Among my older tools I have a screwdriver marked "RemGrit" and "1/4 forged USA". The tip has a bit of abrasive on it and it actually grabs screws very well. All I can find as far as information is that Remgrit is a sawblade. Any ideas?
