I need to widen a slot

I have a slot that is about 1 1/4" wide by 6" long in 1/2" thick steel, I need to widen it to 1 1/2" wide. The slot is nicely machined and I would like it to look nice (not hacked) when I am done. I have a mag based drill and I was thinking of some way to use an end mill in the mag base to get...

This a good price for a Enerpac?

Is $100 for a Enerpac P392 with 3 heads and working gauge an amazing price? I did a quick search of the internet and it looks like a great deal. This is something I would have a use for occasionally, so it would be nice to add to the tool collection. I am just not sure if this price is...

    Cleaning rusty sockets?

I found a pile of sockets in the scrap metal bin laying in water. The rust is mild, looks like minimal damage to the chrome finish on them. They are for work use, pretty isn't so much an issue. I would like to invest little time or effort. Would like to save the chrome if I can. I am...

    Rebuild Bottle Jack?

I bought a 12 ton Wilmar (Taiwanese) bottle jack at the swap meet for $5. I didn't think to op test it before buying, Doh. Wouldn't you know it, it doesn't go up. I haven't disassembled a bottle jack before, but I am familiar with hydraulic systems. I am guessing it is a bad o ring or...

Should I buy this bench grinder?

A Baldor 6" bench grinder for $85. 1/2" spindle, 1/3 hp, 110 v. I did a quick search on ebay and it would seem they run for around $150 or so there. The only hesitation I have is the wheel guards are miss matched. Both guards function, buy they are from different years and don't match. More...

    How to transfer a 1 1/16" hole?

With a transfer punch of course. Unfortunately I don't have one that large. I found one on Amazon for $25 shipped. I don't want to spend that much on a punch that I will rarely have a use for, if ever again. I don't have access to a lathe to turn a bushing to use with a 1/2" transfer...

    Hot work outside?

I guess it would have been better to ask this at the beginning of summer, but... How do you all do grinding or welding outside? The little bit I did out in the driveway left rust stains on the driveway. I tried to use a torch to cut material in the back yard and kept setting the lawn on fire.

Where to buy a 7/16 lathe chuck key?

Title says it. I need one and the cheapest I have found online is $12 with another $10 in shipping! WTF? It's a pretty simple device, and light enough too. Seems it should be out there for $10 shipped. Even better if I could pick one up local. I can't think of a local place to buy one...

    Milling in a lathe?

I saw in the South Bend book: "How to Operate a Screw Cutting Engine Lathe" a milling vise for a lathe. I have no machining experience but a Grizzly 12x37 metal lathe followed me home recently. I have had several projects in the past that having a mill would have been great for. I have had...

    Lathe tooling?

I recently had a Grizzly 12x37 lathe follow me home. The price was right, free! It came with a 3 jaw chuck, a 4 jaw chuck, faceplate, rocker tool post, a follow rest, steady rest, Dorian quick change tool post (SD30BXA), and tail stock. It also appears to have an attachment on the backside...

I have a lathe, now what?

I recently asked the forum if they would take a free lathe in this thread. I was hit with overwhelming responses to take it! So I did. Now all of my friends/family are asking what I am going to use it for. My wife said I could make her candle stick holders! I have a couple projects in mind...

    Conex box in the backyard

I am thinking of stuffing a conex box in the backyard for storage. I need more space! The conex box has the appeal of being portable, I do not plan on retiring in this house. We have several of them at work, I am well versed in modifying them for storage or even workshop use. That part...

    grease a gearwrench ratcheting wrench?

I work in ship repair, so salt water is a common problem with my tools. No matter how often I wipe my tools down they all have some rust. I took my ratchet apart, cleaned it, and coated the mechanism with grease. It has worked well since. I can't figure out how to take apart the gearwrench...

Would you take this lathe if given to you?

We have a Grizzly DF-1237G lathe at the shop waiting to be disposed of. I asked the facilities manager and he said it would be perfectly fine to dispose of it into the back of my truck. I spoke with a machinist in the machine shop and he said it functions fine. I have absolutely no knowledge...

    Putting together an exhaust fan

I have this fan setup and want to use it for an exhaust fan in my garage. My garage is 14x20. I want to mount a filter housing for a home furnace in the ceiling with the fan pulling air through it out a vent in the exterior wall of the garage. I do a fair amount of welding in the garage and...

I need to make a torque arm.

I have a 2002 Z28, I am installing a 8.8 ford rear end in the car. The most difficult part of putting a different rear end in these cars is the torque arm. I want to build an adjustable torque arm to work with the 8.8. I do not want to buy an adjustable torque arm for $300 and then modify it...
