Small portable compressor questions - specifically the tank

Let me start by saying "I'm not, by-and-large, a worrier", but lately I've seen a few youtube videos of compressor tanks rupturing catastrophically. It has me thinking about many things: 1.) My 4HP, 13gal Campbell Hausfeld was new in '96. Do I empty the tank's petcock every so often...

    Vise with cast-in jaws...replacement?

I have a large, old vise in very good condition, except for the jaws: they're worn fairly smooth. Unfortunately, they're the kind that were cast into the vise during the casting. If they were the replaceable / screw-in type, I'd replace them...but they aren't. Is the a way to replace them...

    Samson Jr. 5509

New Vise Day (sort of): Samson Jr. 5509 My wife called me from a garage sale to tell me that they had a small-to-medium size vise for $2. I asked her if it was a fixed base or a swivel base. She said "fixed". I don't really need another vise, but for two bucks, why not, right? Turns out this...

    Metal-cutting chop saw - question

I'm just thinking out loud...feel free to poke holes in this idea: I have a Makita 14" abrasive cut-off saw. It spins at 3800RPM. And like all such tools, it makes a freakin' mess. That's just the nature of the tool... I would love to have a similar 14" saw but with a carbide-toothed blade...

Vintage Drawers - anybody recognize these?

Hi all, Happy Thanksgiving! I think the odds are slim, but I'm hoping someone might know who made these storage drawers. From my earliest childhood memories, (age 3 maybe? [I'm 62 now]), dad had these drawers on his work bench. They were in a pine wooden frame much like you see in the photos...

New Vise Day: Athol 624. Excited, but need some help

I got a VGC Athol 624 for a hundred bucks, and I'm very happy! It's in really good shape, but the owner dealt with some light surface rust by slathering this in oil. It's in desperate need of a thorough cleaning and maybe a coat of paint. It can take a ride in the degreaser at work...

Any info (date, value) on this Union Tool Combo Square?

My friend's dad was a woodworker (as am I), but my friend is not. My friend has a TON of his dad's tools in a storage unit and he has handed me quite a lot of stuff that he has no use for and wants to clean out. He gave me this square, and...truth be known...I have enough squares to sink a...

    Stevens Walden 1/4" socket boxes

I have my dad's SW 1/4" socket set, and over the last few years I've acquired 2 empty SW boxes. Tonight for the first time I noticed something I've never seen before: The stamping on the lid of dad's set is reversed from the other two! Dad's set is at the top, the other boxes are below it...

Vise restoration - hopefully easy question!

Hi All, I have two older vises that I'm going to restore. They work fine, but they're pretty beat up and can benefit from a ride in the degreaser at work followed by some bead blasting & some fresh paint. Disassembly is straightforward, with one exception: the ring that holds the screw...
