I picked up 2 individual phillips, I was suprised with how well they fit a phillips fastner. I think there taper is like the JIS design. (a little more blunt tip)

If the center drilled hole is bigger than the drill bit the tips on the edges could be grabbing and pulling in, the magnetic drill wont stall. Just a guess.

is it actually braking the drill in half or chipping the leading edges of the drill ?

I'm liking the drill press with xy table, very handy to have that option ! Looks pretty solid too. I have a vise with xy travel but its a bit sloppy.
