    HotDawg fan problem

This one is an oddball.... I installed a Modine HD60 one year ago... barely used it last winter. Sat idle (power and gas shut off) all summer. Fired it up again a month ago and it worked fine until Thanksgiving. The first hint something was wrong was the fan started making more noise than...

    Tool chest customization

My lovely wife gave me (well, tolerated me getting) the HF 44" US General chest for me birthday last year, knowing that I needed a new box for the newly built garage. Since I already have a hardwood top work bench for the garage, I decided to do something different by way of upgrading the...

    insuring newly build garage

insuring newly built garage Well my COVID garage build is getting close to completion, and my home owners insurance renews in June.... so it's time to get serious about insurance. My current policy insures all out-buildings at 10% the valuation of the home... and that's not going to cover the...

Drywall contact with concrete foundation wall

I'm hanging the rock on my garage walls tomorrow and am wondering if I need to space it off the concrete foundation (frost wall).... or can I just rest it on the concrete and screw it home to the studs? moisture wicking up through the concrete would be the concern... not sure whether it's...

convert utility sink into parts washer???

I have an old Mustee laundry/utility sink with a poly tub in a metal free standing cabinet with a cover panel. My wife hated it and we never used it so I removed it from our laundry room and have it stored in the barn loft. I'm thinking of putting a 5 gall bucket in the cab with and using and...

    Condensation

Hey gang, Though my 26x30 garage build isn't done yet, I've occupyed and used it since the OHDs were installed this past fall. The garage is seeing it's first Maine cold snap and I'm seeing quite a lot of condensation on the windows each morning. Source of moisture is primarilly snow melt off...

    Rotoray tool vs. Palm router

Just picked up a DeWalt cordless rotary tool for the next phase of my garage build.... which is of course sheet rocking the walls. Soooo..... I bought this as a bare tool off of FleeBay kind of on impulse, as the price seemed right and I'm already heavilly invested in their 20 v Max tool...

Do I need to extend my electrical boxes

Truss framed ceiling with 3/4 strapping and 5/8 fire rated drywall.... I mounted my blue poly light boxes as low as I could go on the bottom cord of the truss. They do not extend fully to the bottom of the hole in the drywall... leave about 1/4" to 3/8" of the drywall holes showing. Is this...

    sheet rock mud

After a careful look at my checkbook, I have decided that I have to mud and tape the rock myself. I've done it twice before and have the tools... I just hate doing it and **** at it. Last time I did this type work was for my basement woodshop ceiling and I used the low dust mud, to avoid...

    getting the ceiling buttoned up

Pushed hard to finish the HotDawg install done before the dead of winter.... partially insulated, strapped and rocked the one corner so I could install heater. Final LPG hookup was done the week before Christmas. Then got serious about insulating the ceiling so I could work in garage without...

    Started my Hot Dawg install

Strapped ceiling, insulated with fiberglass bat, hung 5/8” sheetrock then mounted a 3/4” plywood plate with sheet metal plate on the underside. Cat III stainless vent from Z-vent. Nice quality stuff. Gaskets fit snug and clamps up tight.

    Black iron gas pipe

I'm putting together a shopping list on Zoro to plump LPG to my new Hot Dawg and am surprised to see what a difference there is in the price of fittings. Since these are low pressure lines, is the inexpensive class 150 (likely imported from Asia) sufficient? I could easily quadruple my cost...

sediment trap on short LPG line

My LPG tanks are right off the side of the garage, where I'll mount a second stage regulator and come into and up the wall with black iron pipe to the heater location. I was looking at the Mr. Heater hook up kit, but the valve has a the male compression seat on one side that goes straight to...

rough wiring circuits in studded walls

Is there any standard or limit on the hole size drilled into studded walls for running circuits with Romex? I know you're not supposed to piggy back Romex under staples (unless you use the special stacker clips) and I assume this has to due with heat dissipation in cables when they **** near...

Hot Dawg install: electrical and thermostat

I pulled the trigger on a 60K BTU Hot Dawg and am planning out the install. I have some decisions to make regarding the electrical. I have lots of options as I have yet to close in the walls (open stud bays), so I want to make a decision based on my intended use, which is to only heat the...

    painting the sheet rock ceiling

preface: I did do a search for "ceiling paint" and got a ton of unrelated hits. I'll be hanging the rock and finishing my new garage ceiling myself... I've done sheet rock myself before and I'll just say that you can tell I don't do this for a living. At work we've converted wood framed...

to strap or not to strap, that is the question

I guess this is a hot topic sometimes, but in the north east it's pretty common practice to strap any and all ceilings that are going to get sheet rocked with 1x3 nom softwood at 16" o.c. My garage trusses are 24" o.c. and appear to be very level. I'm debating about whether I need to strap...

    progress report and adjusting trajectory

Hey gang, Well I finally finished trimming out the OHD openings inside and out. Doors are in and scheduled for installation this coming Monday. I also go the eve vents and trim in, and closed in the bottom of the pent roof, so the bats are going to have to have their parties somewhere else...

Are High Bay LEDs too bright for a 10' ceiling?

I'm looking at 14,700 lumen 2'x1' LED high bay shop lights. My finished ceiling height is 10' 8" Garage is 26' x 30' and I'm thinking of putting a pair in the back where there will be a work bench and one in-between the OHDs My concern is that (even though these lights come with diffusers)...
