Can 8-2 Romex be used for machine cord?

i ran 8-2 with ground on a 40 amp circuit for my dust collector. The machine doesn't have a cord and you have to wire into its switch. Can I use the leftover Romex and wire it into the box and put a plug on it? If not what should I use for a cord? it's interesting the machine uses 12-2 wire from...

Where do you point your overhead heater louvers?

i just got a 100k Hot Dawg installed in my 30x40 with 10' ceiling pole barn. I will keep it 40 when not in there and 60 when in there. The 75k would probably have been enough but I need it around 68 when spraying waterborne wood finishes. It is in a corner and pointing at the diagonal corner...

    Furring strips for OSB ceiling?

My pole barn trusses are 10' OC and the builder ran 2x6 joists perpendicular to them 5' OC. As you can see in the pic below each grid is 5x10'. I'm using 7/16" OSB, blowing in at least R-38 insulation, and not putting anything in the attic. I'll hang lights and a few other things but not a lot...

Surface mount metal or flush mount plastic?

My pole barn will finished with OSB and I'm deciding between surface mounted metal boxes or flush mounted (old work) plastic. Is one preferred over the other for outbuildings/garages? The wire is all ran behind the walls and surface mounted sticking out doesn't bother me.

Lighting for new shop - what about CFL's?

I have a 30x40 pole barn with 10' ceilings and someone suggested ceramic fixtures with 85W (300w equivalent) high-CRI CFL's. This would sure make things easy. I'm going to paint the walls and ceiling. Has anyone done this and is it a good/bad idea? Here are the CFL's I could use...

OSB smooth side in or out for walls?

I'm using OSB for my walls and ceiling and wondering if I should do smooth side out or in? The rough side has lines on it. I didn't know if one side primes, paints, and looks better? It's for a woodworking shop so the texture gives it character.

What R value to blow in ceiling?

My pole barn is going to be used for a hobby woodworking shop. I'll keep the temperature around 40-45 when not in there and 55-60 when working in there. When I need to spray waterborne finishes I'll get it up to 68-70. I plan on heating it with a propane ceiling mount heater. My walls will be...

    R-19 insulation - 5.5 or 7" gap better?

The girts for my pole barn are mounted on the outside of my posts. My posts are 5.5" thick so from the inside edge of the pole to the steel is 7". I'm going to insulate using R-19 and use furring strips on the inside of the building. If I put the furring over the posts there will be 7" between...

    OSB vs steel for ceiling

I have a 30x40 pole that was just completed and was going to use OSB for the ceiling but seems a lot of people use steel. What are the advantages to each?

How to insulate and OSB pole barn?

Hi - first time poster here. I'm having a 30x40 pole barn with 8x40 porch put up for a woodworking shop. They should finish up tomorrow and the next steps are to get concrete and power ran to the building. I'm going to finish the inside myself and trying to figure out the best way to do that. I...
