    Mystery Vise

I've been trying to identify this vise for about a month now without much luck. I originally posted this in the main vise thread and on facebook. Some people were able to point me towards Meadville Vise Co. and a patent for a very similar design by Barrett, but that's much as I've been able to...

    Air compressor regulator and filter

Hey folks we recently got a new air compressor for the shop and I'm looking for a good regulator and filter for it. This will be for general shop use so I'm not looking to add an oiler. It's a Quincy QT-54 rated for 15.2 ASFM at 175 psi and has a 1/2" outlet.

    EDIT: Sold

Scrapping this since it was dropped and the base and table were destroyed. I have nearly everything else including spindle, the table raising gearbox, motor, etc. The machine dates to the early 1950's. I have more parts not shown, will ship on your dime.

    What's this acetylene bottle connection?

I'm considering buying this pretty cheap but I'm not sure what is going on with the tank connection for the acetylene bottle. It look like part of the assembly might be missing? What am I seeing here.

    shipping vices overseas

Has anyone shipped a vise from the EU or UK to the US, or vice versa? I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a 4 1/2 from the UK to the US. Best carrier/method? What's a convenient way to package it that won't be too much trouble for the seller?

Replacement power switch for drill press

So I'm nearly done restoring a powermatic 1200 drill press, but I'm having real trouble finding a power switch for the single phase motor I got. It originally came with a momentary switch and 3phase magnetic starter. I'd really like to replace it with a similar push-button sustained switch (1P...

Quincy compressor - factory extended warranty package vs Northern Tool extended warranty?

We are looking at getting a 60 gallon Quincy air compressor for the shop. I've never been one for buying extended warranties, but this seems like it might be worth it? What's the GJ's consensus on the Northern Tool warranty process, or Quincy's warranty for that matter?

Fire safety part 2 - when it happens

A while back we had a really good discussion about tips and best practices for avoiding fires in the garage/shop. Well, today I was the first bystander on scene to a fire at an enclosed home garage in a neighborhood near my workplace. The homeowner was out safely when I got there but was both...

    Mounting a large grinding wheel

I recently got a 10" pedestal grinder that came with a 10"x1" stone mounted on it. I removed the stone for safety when function testing the machine, but when I tested the stone and decided to reinstall it I discovered that the spindle diameter of the grinder is only 7/8" while the stone has a 1"...

    Old Porter Cable belt grinder

I'm trying to find out any information about some old belt grinders for sale. It's a matching pair of Porter Cable 4" and 10" belt grinders. The smaller of these machines seems like it would be perfect for my garage, but the seller has very little information listed. Has anyone used one of these?

Anyone in Austin available to help me grab a craigslist deal this weekend?

The seller moves out of state on Monday and I'm not able to make it down there from DFW until next week. Just hoping someone could pick up a cool old tool after I pay the seller and hold onto it for a week or so.

    Powermatic 1200 restoration

Well, not 2 months since I finally finished restoring my 1964 powermatic 1150 drill press, and here I go again. A couple days ago I found a Powermatic 1200 on a single-head production table just sitting out front of a fab shop out in the countryside. Turns out the work shed it was in collapsed...

Drill press - 15" Powermatic vs 20" Rockwell

I need GJ's opinion on a drill press buy. I've found a 50's-60's 20" Rockwell 70-400 (possibly equivalent to a Walker-Turner 1100?) in great shape for $500. But... I literally just finished restoring an early 60's Powermatic 1150, new paint job, wiring, bearings, etc. And I can't justify buying...

    Finally got a lathe

Well after 3 months of searching, I finally brought home a lathe yesterday. I've been looking for an affordable one to put in my garage and learn to use and make basic parts on, but everything around here tends to be huge, or beat up but still really pricy. I saw the ad for this on facebook...

    Mystery american lathe MFG

So I've had a bit of a hankering for a metal lathe lately but don't want to spend a fortune. That's led to a lot of looking around of CL, facebook etc and today I found this mystery machine out in rural oklahoma. It's much too big for me, which is unfortunate since the asking price is real...

    Degreasing inaccessible places

I'm currently cleaning up an old vise that has the lead screw basically frozen in place due to 100+ years of old grease and gunk where the lead screw passes through the dynamic jaw. Unfortunately, the retaining collar has been welded onto the lead screw so I can't remove the screw from the...

    Antique GE torpedo welder

I'm putting this cool old welder up for sale due to lack of space and suitable power source. The model is WD-32 by General Electric. It's a 3-phase welder powered by a large electric motor spinning a DC generator. This machine was made in 1943. It's very heavy, but it's on wheels. For the asking...
