    Clear (acrylic) Sump Basin Cover?

Speaking about sump pumps, am I alone thinking that a clear sump basin cover is a good idea? I need a new cover and there are lots of conventional composite covers around (e.g.: PlumbStar USA) but I'm considering buying or fabricating an acrylic cover. I don't have past experience with them...

Leaky valve in 5-gal portable aluminum air tank - replacement?

Happy Sunday GJ guys and gals, I own this JEGS 5 gal. Horizontal Portable Aluminum Air Tank for a long time, and 9 times in 10, I'll find it totally depleted. The on-off valve (red knob) is very touchy and doesn't always shut properly. The pressure relief also sometimes has hard times to...

NOCO Air AL5 tire inflator any good?

Any GJ'er has first hand experience with the NOCO Air AL5 tire inflator? The Amazon reviews aren't super encouraging. I have air compressor, but portable inflators are a lot more convenient for the family to use. If not NOCO, could you suggest any brand? I'm in Bosch ecosystem, so no luck...

Difficulties to read oil level on new (clean) oil...

Hey GJ guys and gals, Am I the only person facing difficulties to read oil level on new (clean) oil? :) In this case, it's my 2018 Toyoda Highlander V6, the shinny dipstick doesn't help either. I change oil every 5k miles and usually let it drain overnight, so the new oil is super clear. I'm...

Torque Pro app not compatible with newer Android sw? WTF!

Happy Sunday GJ'ers! So I'm a powertrain/driveability geek and I'm interested in (occasionally) monitoring current gear and torque converter lockup state among other things on my daily drivers, so after reading raving opinions of the Torque Pro app ($4.95) here for many years I ordered a...

Can power outlets be installed near kitchen sink?

Hey guys, Being an older house, my kitchen is starved of power outlets. I'd love to be able to add a duplex power outlet to this 2-gang light/garbage disposal switches box. Would that be code compliant? I count that I should be able to source power from this box. Wrong? Otherwise there's a...

Who uses removable caulk? What for?

Hey guys and gals, I'm curious to hear about less obvious uses of removable caulks, other then using it for temporarily sealing windows. Would it be good for sealing around a shower faucet scutcheon? Sealing between toilet perimeter and floor? Do you have a favorite brand? DAP Seal 'n Peel...

Shop-vac filter for light wet pickup: cartridge vs foam filters?

Hello GJ guys and gals, What type of filters are you using in your shop-vacs for light wet pickup like car's seats/carpets cleaning and such? Cartridge or foam filters? While there are cartridge filters compatible with dry and light wet pickup (e.g.: PN 90398), Shop-Vac indicates preference...

Gallon paint can storage: upright? upside down? sideways?

Hello guys and gals, Is there a preference for long term storage of gallon paint cans? Upright? Upside down? Sideways? I have about a dozen of gallon cans, most new, some used, placed on shelves in the basement. Some of them are for painting my two-car garage, but clearing the garage is not...

Yard engines operating in cold weather - long term harm from overcooling?

Just curious... do you guys do any mods to small engines when operating in cold weather (32°F/0°C and below)? Like partially taping air colling ports? (which can be an issue if overdone) I know on higher tech engines operating hard when cold or overcooled can result in piston/cylinder scuffing...

Rust prevention for fresh cut metal?

I built a dolly to store my Tahoe's 3rd row seats with spare material I had laying around and used 1/2" threaded rods cut to length. Given this will be stored in my basement which sometimes is a bit more humid than ideal (new dehumidifier should improve that), I'd like to brush something on the...

Please review my lighting plan for my (working) 2-car garage

Hello illumination masters, After a 10-year wait, I’m finally getting ready for my garage makeover. I’m a weekender that works on cars, motorcycles, engines, etc. It’s an attached 2-car garage: 21’ x 26’ x 8’. It currently has really poor lighting and my 55-yo eyes don't help either. It’s all...

Air hose - not Flezilla - hybrid the way to go?

I'm a long time big fan of Flexzilla hoses for air and water, but I'm getting sick and tired of them dragging and snagging on just about everything. I'm just a weekend warrior and I'm looking for a more 'slippery' air hose. I'm considering hybrid polyurethane hoses, or maybe something like the...

Bending moment resistance: Unistrut vs flat 2x4?

Hey guys, I'm organizing my shed and plan reinforcing the existing shelf a bit (95" spam). It's currently supported by three flat 2x4s and it sags very easily. I don't plan storing heavy items there, but I'd like to make it stronger. Does anyone have easy access to bending moment data...

Is my Occupancy Sensor Switch going bad? Or ghosts are visiting?

I updated the kitchen light switch with a Cooper Occupancy Sensor Switch model OS306U-W-K around eights years ago and I just love it! It's so convenient and it has been working great. That's until about a month ago... when it started turning on automatically without any motion around. It turns...

Lug nut thread lubrication - what do you use?

I don't like my lug nut threads dry/rusted and that grab/go/grab/go feel whether you're torqueing or losing lug nuts. I typically use a drop of motor oil, or even anti-seize compound... haven't lost a wheel in forty years. So.. what do the GJ's say? Have a good day!
