PSA/ Rant/ singing the blues, and taking personal responsibility.

Ode to the professionalism of contractors and public utilities. A couple years ago, we decided to go green, and switch out the gas furnace for a heat pump and air handler with electric back up heat. Then, the electric provider sent a mega surge down my street. Less that two months after...

    Fiber reinforced polymer

New to me product was spec’d on a job. We cut holes in some brick masonry unit walls, and the engineer wanted to add back some shear strength. The walls were only reinforced with K wire. It was a combination of fiberglass and Kevlar overlay in epoxy. Not the prettiest stuff. The special...

    Sawmill

After a month long wait, my sawmill arrived today! A couple years ago I started considering buying a mill. I started to research the different brands, pouring over reviews, and narrowed in on the Woodland Mills HM126 Woodlander. I know there are other machines out there, but this make/model...

Need help sourcing a free standing structural mezzanine for existing building

Looking to add a self contained steel structural mezzanine to an existing steel building w/o altering the existing structure. Thinking it will require additional footings, but no attachment at walls. Approx. 25’ X 30’ with a 10’ ceiling height. Leaning towards a pan-deck/slab type floor. We...

    Am I doing it wrong?

Kicking up some dust in the shop this afternoon. Wearing a mask fogs up my glasses. How can they fog up my glasses if they aren’t letting air in and out around the edges? I bent the nose to fit tight, but my glasses still fog up and I got dusty boogers in my nose. Do these things work at...

    Everything Fiberglass Thread

I did a quick search, and didn’t come up with anything specifically regarding fiberglass work/repair. Is there a thread I missed? I haven’t done any glass work since I was in college, and that was a long time ago. I now have a project, and would love to hear from the GJ community on the...

    '78 F350 Dually Project

I picked this up a couple weeks ago. I gave next to nothing for it, and I was able to drive it home. The guy said it runs, drives and stops. He wasn't lying, although it doesn't do any of them very well. It's a project that needs just about everything you can imagine a 39 year old work truck...

Can I get a safety consult?

I'd like to remove this steel plate from the bed of my truck. The plate is very close to the fuel cap. Not really a place for a lot of sparks or hot shavings. It's welded on solid across the back of the plate. I'd like to just cover it with a welding blanket, but maybe I should pull the...

    Adverse Welding conditions

Snapped a pic of a welder on my site today. Pretty ugly working conditions. Got me thinking that there must be a lot of you on here that have to put up with adverse work environments too. Farmers, pipe fitters, gas line, oil industry....... What's the worst you've had to endure?

    Couple thoughts on grinders......

I spent a few hours this morning removing the anti corrosion coating off some schedule 40 fire sprinkler pipe for an upcoming project. I was using a 80 grit flap disc. I started out with what is probably my 'Best' grinder, a larger, heavier, more powerful Milwaukee. My hand got tired. I then...

Your next mission, should you choose to accept it

Help me ID my latest CL freebie. Some sort of cast iron, foot operated punch? The pedal causes the lower pin type punch to raise. Both tapers are adjustable. The top on has a funny end on it. Dale is cast in to the side, but no other numbers or info. A few google searches yielded nothing.
