Picked up this Craftsman 1/4 drive Master? set today it all SAE an all 1/4 drive. Looking for some info on it. I've never seen one this big with all these items. In the envelope are some plastic magnet holders. one of the bits need to be replaced, but I believe I have one. What is the vintage? No luck finding this set on the WEB.

Also picked up a Columbian 504 and a Reed 71 pipe vise. I'll post some pics of these in the vise thread

Wow !! Cool set, I'm jealous :D

It's a little hard to say for sure without inspecting each piece, but the double line V (=V=) was used from approx. 1959-1967 or so and then showed up again briefly in the 70's before disappearing for good.

Then there's the ratchet. It looks like a double line V teardrop ratchet with the long lever, but no quick release. If so, then it would have been produced between approx. 1964-1967.

If the ratchet has an oil hole, then earlier in that period.
If the ratchet is missing the oil hole, then later in the period.

I would have expected the Crowntop Logo on the case. Since it only has the Craftsman name embossed in block letters, I'm inclined to place it towards the later end of the dates.

So, my guess is that set is from sometime around 1967. :dunno:

EDIT - Found it.
Page 92 from the 1967 Sears Catalog. The ratchet in the 1968 catalog has the quick release.

A local auto body shop has been having a going out of business sale and Saturday was the last day. Everything was pretty much picked over, but I managed to get this MAC SPOT 150 welder for $140 dollars. The welder is in almost new condition and is only missing a few contact tips. The date stamp on the back of welder is 2002. The welder is still being made today under the Compuspot name, so I can still buy accessories parts for it. New price today is around 1200 dollars for this spot welder.

So how big is the Morgan? What jaw size?

Jaw opening is 9" and jaw is 4" which I think it's pretty small for that size body.

Ben Buck :
The California license plate are a dime a dozen.
You need a matching pair to maybe be worth anything.
They must be cleared through the DMV to make sure the numbers haven't been reissued.

Thanks Stewed, I was being told this by the store owner? :dunno:

Well there is some sort of "Hobitizing" going on with that first pic! Peter Jackson could learn something from that!

As soon as I saw the "40" I knew it was a 4" vise, probably has a "1" in front of it which is the number for a Morgan 4" swivel.

Was working a lot, so I did not get out to any sales last 2 months, but hit a few this last weekend. Got a few odds and ends, but the crown jewel is this Wilton 9400 for $40. Was at a local estate sale. I actually got there an hour after it opened. The garage was ransacked, but I found this vise in a back shed under a bunch of ****. Smooth hardened jaws are not original. This was the estate of a machinist, so I think he made them. Did a nice job, they line up perfect, and are harder than ****. A standard Craftsman punch wont even ding them. Honestly, it looks barely used. 6-30-64 date on the slide. I looked around for the original jaws, but no dice. Either way, a nice price.

You **** on that Wilton find!! Those jaws look very well made. I prefer smooth and they seem to hold just as good.

I've found several good vises at garage and estate sales. A lot of times they're bolted to a workbench and everyone assumes they're not for sale until you ask!

Isn't that the truth. I've bought a few nice vises still there on the second day. I have got a couple as cheap a few bucks. I usually just unbolt it and drag it to the checkout.

Because of snow and a planned outing, I missed the only sale in my area this weekend.
However ........

I had planned on going to a model train show on saturday, but shoveled snow instead. The trip to the show got moved to sunday. While there, I stopped in to a vendor that sells cheap import tools for modeling. I picked up a pair of fine brass brushes (similar to the nylon airbrush cleaning set sold by HF) and a small "made in Pakistan" craft anvil. (pics 1&2)

But that's not why I'm posting -

I had mentioned to joe.striper that I was going to the show, he said that it wasn't too far from him and that he had a surprise package for me that he didn't want to mail. He wouldn't tell me what it was. So we met up in a parking lot (outside Harbor Freight no-less). While he was visiting NJ Marty to drop off a vise we arranged to get to him, Marty gave him this package to give to me as a thank you.

Inside the bag was 3 c-clamps with winged handles (my favorite ).
pic 3 -
an 8" unknown #18
a 10" Cincinnati (Hargrave)
and a 2' quilting clamp

The two large clamps have already been wire wheeled and are sitting in the EvapoRust tub getting cleaned up. Soon they will get paint and will join my growing army. :D

Thank you Marty for your thoughtful gift, and to Joe for hauling them back from NJ.

Just an update. It's been over a month, but I finally got around to cleaning up the clamps. You can see them here -

Must be a Wilton winter kind of day. Just got back from a pick with a friend.
Grabbed a half quart container of various sockets, SK,MAC,Proto,Snap On and Cornwell along with a 5" Wilton swivel and a 4" Wilton swivel , the 4" is labelled Chicago and the 5" is Schiller Park. Both have swivels, lockdowns are intact, etc.

Might have paid a little much for the sockets but the vises were only a "few" bucks more than the Craftsman cabinet I picked up this weekend.

Went to a midweek sale and picked up a few items for $5.
What do you all think the India made Gedore wrench set would sell for. I only grabbed them because they were really clean and cheap.

Estate sale out in Commerce Twp, the rare 3/8dr Craftsman RHFT flex head ratchet!

Just curious why these are considered rare? I have both the Craftsman 3/8 and 1/2 flex head ratchet that I bought new and really love them...

I never liked taking others tools, but I was at the junkyard and found these inside a dashboard of an older gmc truck and if I turned them into the junkyard they would just sell them anyway. I thought they were junk at first because they were covered in rust, oil, and cigarette ash. I got home and cleaned up the rust on a the wire wheel. Turned out to be all USA, top is Snap On, Middle is Pro-America, and bottom is Wilco. I've gotten a few tools from working on vehicles in the past, but nothing like this. I was pretty happy. SO technically I didn't find them at a garagesale, but didn't know where to else to post.

P.S. the Craftsman 1/2 grinder I bought three weeks ago works fantastic. Used the extra wire wheels I was given to brush off all the rust. Unfortunately it brushed off the snap-on markings and some of pro-america markings.

I must have done something good Karma wise in the past week.

Not much garage sale action here with the cold and the snow. One estate sale with some tools, about 5 minutes from an appointment this AM.

Lots of cheap tools, mostly rusty. But I did find this.

150306%20Haul.jpg

Missing from the picture is the 10 1/2' surf rod to go with the reel and 60 lbs of lead. $15 out the door.

The hatchet with the handle is an American Axe & Tool Americanax. With the handle it weighs 3.25 lbs. It will make a nice kindling axe. The unhandled axe is a winchester.

Unfortunately, the MAC VRF Ratchet came with 7 sockets, but 3 are 3/4". Wish I had one of these about 25 years ago.

Davefr, those old Coleman fuel cans are sought after by Coleman collectors. They bring $ on ebay.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I'll quit tossing them out when they're empty. I think I have some a lot older then that.

I blend Odorless Mineral Spirits with Coleman Fuel (Naptha) and use it for ultrasonic cleaning rinse. It costs about $1/gallon at G-sales vs the L&R stuff that sells for about >$50/gallon which is the same formula.

Here's $10 I spent today.

IMG_8973.JPG

Swivels are Cornwell, the extension and single socket above it is Snap-On, and everything else is Craftsman except for the PowRKraft DBE.

Picked up this 6ftx3ft butcher block for $125. May of over paid a little but it's what I wanted. Planning to either cut it down or use a router and make it over hang my 68" Epiq.
