Still not a lot of activity in my neck of the woods, but I did hit up an estate sale last Saturday - $27:
The rotary was on CL for 11 days @ 200. It was in the middle of nowhere. He offered it at 135 so I had to buy it.
I just want it for lining up my drilling. Im working on small stuff all the time. Its funny I have been looking for these for a while and now I have 2. Ive already gotten PMs asking about it.
I think the rotary is new. No scratches and no wood or metal filings anywhere. In fact my biggest complaint is how damned stiff the handles are to turn.
It is phenomenally well made and it is really, really cool to use.

Scored some old auto service tools I'm going to add to the display in the waiting room of my repair shop. Love finding this stuff . . . all for $47
since finding this site and lurking, I've gotten the bug, HARD. mainly plomb/proto because Los Angeles and I like the detail on the older stuff. But I have a very hard time passing anything up...
Here's from last weekend. couple estate sales on friday, marked armstrong ratchet for 7$ from the estate company that I don't like much, high prices+attitude. Second sale found some proto sockets, a couple small proto/plomb wrenches, proto spoon chisels??, cant remember what else, not much, 11$
saturday went to the beach so couldn't go to any sales.
sunday coming home from work saw a sign said f it and swerved onto the side street. cool guy, moms moving to idaho, couldnt take the stuff. he had a really nice metal parts organizer thing, big, went for 60$ including contents. nice big craftsman dpress, 50$. I have no room and my dad has one, otherwise it would be mine.
major things from sunday:
williams hbp-4 hammer
cman hammer
(hammer on right is the first hammer I bought, not from sunday, before that I didnt understand why people get hot for hammers. really like the part that connects the head to the middle part? lol sorry for my limited vocabulary)
decent size c-clamps, Brink&Cotton, Williams, Hargrave
cman circle-H extensions, sliding T-handle, speeder, breaker, 1/2" (to me looks like plomb and I've heard plomb did make things for cman at some point)
little proto los angeles adj wrench 6"
and the thing I was happiest to have found, a 1/2" plomb female ratchet and from a picture I saved from somewhere, it looks like a 1928 marking. pretty neat. only a year younger than my grandma
35$ for everything including the book! i have way way way too many books. we chatted for a bit and he gave me his number, I may call him and see about the drill press even though I cant do anything with it :X I have issues...
also a thorsen hex drive socket set, incomplete but has a little flex handle thing and a cool box. didnt know thorsen was in oakland, ca.
Unknown:
Brass Hammer
. I drained the crank case and the manual says to use #10 oil. I'm new to that one is there an equivalent name brand oil?

Proto.

Not proto, or at least not the OEM, Temco or something. Mcmaster sells them. The angled green texture is a dead giveaway.
l would use a non detergent oil in the scroll saw, since there is no oil filter.
Southern Indiana is not exactly the hotbed of tool scavenging. Getting a deal on Craigslist is usually pretty rare it seems. We are mostly limited to garage and non professional estate sales.
All the other sales that day were HF and flea market rejects.

The general consensus is even non detergent motor oil contains paraffin and shouldn't be used in this application. I did some searching and came up with this Mobil Light Spindle Velocite® Machine Oil
here are the specs
Mobil No. 6 Light Spindle Velocite® Machine Oi
Mobil Machine Oil
Food Grade (Yes/No): No

Type: Oil No. 6 Light Spindle Oil
Container Size: 1 Gal.
Container Type: Container
Trade Name: Velocite®

or this one
Mobil No. 10 Spindle Velocite® Machine Oil
Mobil Machine Oil
Food Grade (Yes/No): No
ISO Grade: 22
Type: Oil No. 10 Spindle Oil
Container Size: 1 Gal.
Container Type: Container
Trade Name: Velocite®
ISO VG: 22
Viscosity (cSt @ 40°C): 20.2
What do you guys think.
darn Good, Is the Hole saw set for metal I take it?Went to opening day of an estate sale yesterday that had tons of tools. The auctioneers must have mistaken chrome and rust for gold because the prices on the tagged items were insane. They wanted $700 for an anvil that was welded to its base.
Hahahahahahahaa
All in all I did pretty good. Supposedly the son in law came in before the sale and cleaned out all the Snap On tools. I still managed to come out with a few.
The body hammer is Snap On and the bumping hammer is a Fairmount. The one spoon is in real nice shape too.
Misc tools including Starrett hole saws with a Starrett arbor, tons of cut-off wheels, auto center punch, large Stanley ball pein, hand vise, jacobs chuck, chuck key that I needed for my lathe chuck, large General tap handle (needed this size), Bonney cam roller (?), Proto snap ring pliers, large Armstrong adjustable, a weird crimp tool, parallel clamp, a Milwaukee (almost) 90* attachment, a hunk of scrap steel and a block of aluminum to play with on my mill.
Misc Snap On.
Snap On air chisel with some tools (the seam splitter is Snap On).
Nothing spectacular, but I'm happy enough. Grand total for the day was $85.
I saw this info on-line as well. $20 for a gallon isn't too bad? I wonder how much is needed though.
Sorry to hear it's dismal. It sad to hear that and it's strange how some areas are worse than others. I live in So. Cal and regularly shocked how good we got it, all you need to to do is give yourself a very nice wish list and just wait and the items will pop up eventually with nice prices; I can't explain as we live in a young state but we did have a large aerospace industry. The only other state I wish I was in for nice finds is PA.
I also have to spend time in FL and extremely unimpressed with the offerings there on craigslist. It's actually painful compared to So Cal.
There's not a whole lot of info on your radial drill press but head over to http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=698&tab=4 and search through it.
Here's some more info but not much: http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=4557
Not from a garage sale, but scored a sweet freebie from work!
Been eyeing this toolbox just sitting there for almost ten years... The other day I notice somebody mangled the lock.. I ask the guy who's area it is, and they said "yeah, so and so couldn't find a key so he mangled it to open it and see what's inside"... My response "He didn't notice the call for replacement key" sticker?
Anyways... I asked what's happening with it, and they said why? You want it? You can have it.

7 Drawer Lista for free? I'LL TAKE IT!
Finally, my turn! Two planned stops today, first one didn't have tools out yet, said tomorrow but I did find a couple pair of Wiss scissors, cheap china scissors and an outlet strip for $2.25
![]()
Second stop mentioned LOTS of tools, there were a bunch but only a few worthy of grabbing. They were asking $53, I offered $40 and we met at $45 on a Craftsman box, two pair of Channel Locks, Armstrong wrench, Husky impact swivel and Craftsman crowfoot.
![]()
Included in that $45 was all these new refrigerant cans and two hoses.
![]()
Along with this Craftsman lathe, motor with 4 step pulley and knives!
![]()
Then on the way home I saw a sign and made a slight detour, good thing too, I snagged this barely used Craftsman edger for $30, didn't even haggle!
![]()
Total today was $77.25![]()
