Slipped off to a yard sale today (5/14/2015) and when asked if they had any old tools, seller said he had gathered some old tools up and planned to call Mike who was always advertising for old tools on the Trading Post radio program. When told him it was me, he brought them out and I picked out a few interesting old tools to buy.

Pic 5 Nice surprise when cleaning up tools, was the Ridgid End or Angle E14 pipe wrench had a B&O RR Co. marking on it. I originally only bought this wrench, but when that showed up, was curious and went back and bought other pipe wrench, but no B&O RR Co markings were found on it.

The "Wadsworth Electric Mfg" thing? I got it just b/c I've never seen it before. I posted in another thread to try to find out. According to another GJ member is
"...used for servicing circuit breakers. The serrated cup is used to hold the head of rivets used on breakers so the crimp side can be drilled out without spinning the rivet...."

Just curious as I've been looking for an elusive 9/32 drive set in a small box like that from 1935 vintage. I've never seen a real one so not 100% sure what it looks like in the wild.

I picked up this Craftsman set last year, it's made by Snap-On. All c-series, it's 9/32. No 9/32 ratchet though. The other set is 1/2", also c-series.

Take the motor off, table off, trunnions off, and then you should be able to dolly the base up a flight of stairs. What is the make/model?

The saw is a Craftsman Heritage Logo cabinet model. In all the hubbub, I forgot to look for the model number. So I can't even start a search for the manual yet. The blade is 10" or 12".

I removed the motor and the long wing to reduce the weight. It turns out the wings are cast aluminum, so no help there. I don't want to dissasemble it any further because I don't want to risk screwing up the alignment or damaging the arbor assembly. The base is cast steel, not sheet steel like the flimsy saws sold today. More weight.

It turns out that the 3 or 4 steps that I thought the walkout bulkhead had was actually 8 or 9. And then, some idiot put a rafter from the shed roof in front of the outer doors, so one of them won't open fully. It's going to be a tight squeeze.


I'll have to go back tomorrow with the Lump-in-Law to try to get it out again. Hopefully he'll be use[less]full. If not, I'll have to break out the tools again and take it home in (more) parts.



The motor was replaced at some point with a Doerr. It's a 3/4hp, 1725rpm, dual voltage motor. Wired for 110v. The cord is a cut off orange extension cord. There was a switch box added so it can be reached from the front. I'll end up rewiring the whole thing, some of it looks iffy.

More pictures if I ever get the rest of it home.

1hp would be better, but 3/4hp should get the job done until an original 1hp falls in my lap.

Stage - The door may indeed have to come off, I'm just trying to avoid it if I can. The strap hinges are painted over and the screws are full of paint. The house is going to be sold, so I'd rather not marr it if I can help it. The person running the sale is going to check with the owner for permission, just in case.


All - Change of plans for tomorrow. I'm taking my sister to help me lift the saw (her idea, not mine). She's more useful than her husband anyways. I'll leave him home to watch the baby while we're gone. We're taking a risk either way.

Wasn't doing something today so I got on CL and saw and ad for some crown logo Craftsman tools from an estate sale....sent an email not expecting a reply,, but score!, I was the first one to email. I got all below for$45
I was mainly interested in the tool box.now I gotta get home and clean them up before I decide what I'll do with them

for sure. a hand impact is your friend. cordless impact works too but hand impact usually will not strip if they are really gummed with paint or stuck in old wood

I do believe that little powerpal is/was the only oil-less compressor that was really worth a damn. Mine refused to die and I finally gave it away.

The old PowerPal's are great little oil-less compressors (if a tad loud). With a small tank added to it - Sweeeeet !!

I'm having terrible luck. The wife and I went to three garage sales today and not only did we not find a darn thing (I did get a shirt for a buck) all three of these places (in town) had garages devoid of any tools, ladders, or even camping gear. All three had exactly one lawn mower and a weed eater and thats about it.

Wow... a toolless home... I'm used to seeing tools and benches, even if they are not for sale...

I have a little hope for tomorrow. one of my favorite Annual Block sales is tomorrow. Last year it was almost nothing this year they are claiming 60 or more participating homes. it's about a dozen streets or so that do this. there are a couple of others that do this annually. I have 6 others planned besides the big block...

Yup.
I kept my tankless one and still use it to blow out the water pipes at my house and my camp up north for the winter so the pipes don't freeze. It fits in a storage tote with a 25' hose in the closet. I love it too much to get rid of it.

Garage sales today were not much times 6 (week my wife did find some Pyrex she collects) then I hit a yard sale with and old leather lined ammo can, old vise-grips nippers, a folding Stanley rule, and a medium duty vise! Sweet. Oh and the awesome guy holding the sale is a fellow GJ member, whose wife collects Pyrex. Small world indeed. Thanks Andy!

I had not heard of Basford either but there is a little info on the alloy artifacts page about them. The ammo can is a ww2 era missing the canvass handle and has remenants of leather lining that may have been not original.

Here is a small update from a previous sale. I picked up a handful of ratchets threat were almost beyond saving due to rust and neglect. Figuring I had nothin to lose, I let them sit in evaporust overnight.

It works wonders on chrome and I was pleasantly surprised with the results

2 craftsman BE ratchets, 1 BE breaker bar and an Indesteo ratchet, all given a new lease on life

Got three Napa USA double-end flare nut wrenches from 1/2 to 3/4 for $3.25 total. Figured that was a good deal.
