Jake,OK, so here was the big shocker. I'm actually a little mad about it, kinda.
It seems that my Grandfather was holding out on me.
As I was digging around the shop, I found an old(ish) Porta-Power box. I knew the box was empty, because my Grandfather had blown it out and scrapped it years ago (it was a cheap import). Just for giggles, and to see if any of it was left, I opened the box. No PP fittings, BUT ! ............ In the box was a wrench roll that I'd never seen before. All my life, we used Craftsman wrenches for just about everything, because my Grandfather refused to pay over-inflated prices for the "good" brands. I was ok with that because his Cmans were all the good vintage stuff anyway.
So why was I now looking at a Williams wrench roll that he kept hidden from everyone ?
And where did the rest of the set go ?????????????????
Now, here's where I get a little miffed. I've just spent the last 2-1/2 years (and a lot of money) cobbling together the SAME SET OF WRENCHES. I just picked up the last one I needed two weeks ago. And I was telling him about how hard it was to find some of them in good condition for a good price the whole time. They were sitting in his garage the whole time. He never said a word about his stash. Not once. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Family. [HARUMPH !]
Still, it will be good for a chuckle when thoughts of him cross my mind over the years.
I'll post more of his tools as I get them, if they're worth bothering.
Thanks for letting me share.
Jake,
My condolences on losing the man who raised you and taught you about tools and being handy. Any chance that he intended that Williams wrench set for you at some point in the past, knowing your interest in such?Regardless, treasure the good memories. I'm sure you will every time you see one of his tools.

Alright, it was back to real tool hunting this morning. One sale that advertised "Tons of Tools". Well, the ad wasn't wrong, but 95% of the tools we were tripping over were imported junk. There were a few old tilt-table Cman saws in various stages of disassembly, and one that was complete and in good shape. I think it was a boneyard to get the working one up and running. Either way, I left them alone. The basement and garage were spilling over with tools and trash, you had to be careful where you put your feet. I was really exited until I realized that everything was from HF or the local dollar store. BUT THEN, it happened. Just as I was getting ready to walk out empty handed, I noticed a newer Cman toolbox hiding under a table. Since it was the only toolbox not being pawed over, I decided to check it out just for the heck of it. Once again, it was almost all junk. Until I spotted the smooth handled wrench near the bottom. Here's what I found after dumping the box on the floor and guarding it like a wolf feeding on a kill while I sifted through it.

A sale popped up on CL and I was 3 hours late to the show. The guy running it was selling the estate for his friend who recently died at 100 years old. He said it was mayhem when he first opened. I was so surprised to see good stuff still there. First off I asked about the vise, $20 done deal, axes $2 each, proto 20" adjustable $5. I knew the prices were beyond good and grabbed a bunch of stuff. Total for todays buys was $120. I should recoup that on the axes and proto.

Here's today's finds but first I'm sorry for your loss Jake. Glad to see you found some items you never knew about.
Now on to my finds, I had answered an ad on CL about welding tools. It was a older lady and her daughters trying to sell off the late husbands tools from when he had a welding shop. There where quite a few nice pieces and lots of steel but this is what I came home with for a total of $265.
First a Jet,new in box, sander with some new sanding discs for $25, next was this Milwaukee Mag-drill which I don't know if it works yet, missing the chucks, for $200, then came the little craftsman lathe for $25, no pic yet, and finally a Rock Island no. 587 vise with 6" jaws for $20.
Overall a good day for a 2 hour round trip to Portsmouth,NH.
