I need help. Just moved in to a new construction home and told them to prewire a 2 bay 3 car garage for garage door openers. They did. Went to install this tonight http://m.sears.com/craftsman-1-hps-belt-drive-garage-door-opener/p-00955918000P. And I don't have enough clearance due to a beam to lift the unit up. See picture 1(228a)..

I then went to install number 2 and have no room to install header bracket and don't know where to put the door bracket. Can I install #2 off center???

My heart goes out to you and your family Jake, losses are hard and that close to a holiday makes it worse. My grandfather passed away two decades ago, the week between Xmas and New Years and I'll never forget it. I certainly won't say you ****, due to circumstances but I will say I'm glad they went to a good home as I know you will cherish them as much or more than he did himself.

OK, so here was the big shocker. I'm actually a little mad about it, kinda.

It seems that my Grandfather was holding out on me.
As I was digging around the shop, I found an old(ish) Porta-Power box. I knew the box was empty, because my Grandfather had blown it out and scrapped it years ago (it was a cheap import). Just for giggles, and to see if any of it was left, I opened the box. No PP fittings, BUT ! ............ In the box was a wrench roll that I'd never seen before. All my life, we used Craftsman wrenches for just about everything, because my Grandfather refused to pay over-inflated prices for the "good" brands. I was ok with that because his Cmans were all the good vintage stuff anyway.

So why was I now looking at a Williams wrench roll that he kept hidden from everyone ?
And where did the rest of the set go ?????????????????

Now, here's where I get a little miffed. I've just spent the last 2-1/2 years (and a lot of money) cobbling together the SAME SET OF WRENCHES. I just picked up the last one I needed two weeks ago. And I was telling him about how hard it was to find some of them in good condition for a good price the whole time. They were sitting in his garage the whole time. He never said a word about his stash. Not once. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Family. [HARUMPH !]

Still, it will be good for a chuckle when thoughts of him cross my mind over the years.

I'll post more of his tools as I get them, if they're worth bothering.
Thanks for letting me share.
Jake,

My condolences on losing the man who raised you and taught you about tools and being handy. Any chance that he intended that Williams wrench set for you at some point in the past, knowing your interest in such?

Regardless, treasure the good memories. I'm sure you will every time you see one of his tools.

Condolences Jake. G-Pa hiding tools - I think all old guys did this. Like wearing your Sunday best before you really need to.

Actually, I think he forgot he owned it. The box was buried under a pile that hadn't moved in decades.

As for who gets the tools, out of 4 grandsons and 2 granddaughters, I'm the only tool user. It was always a given that the tools were mine and he always made it clear to the others. I just wasn't going to take them until it was a certainty that he would never use them again. The workshop was the only place he could get away from my Grandmother for a few minutes at a time.

Over the last few years, I have been slowly "trading" out tools with him. A 15" 1940's Cman drill press for an 8" 1990's Delta, for instance.

Alright, it was back to real tool hunting this morning. One sale that advertised "Tons of Tools". Well, the ad wasn't wrong, but 95% of the tools we were tripping over were imported junk. There were a few old tilt-table Cman saws in various stages of disassembly, and one that was complete and in good shape. I think it was a boneyard to get the working one up and running. Either way, I left them alone. The basement and garage were spilling over with tools and trash, you had to be careful where you put your feet. I was really exited until I realized that everything was from HF or the local dollar store. BUT THEN, it happened. Just as I was getting ready to walk out empty handed, I noticed a newer Cman toolbox hiding under a table. Since it was the only toolbox not being pawed over, I decided to check it out just for the heck of it. Once again, it was almost all junk. Until I spotted the smooth handled wrench near the bottom. Here's what I found after dumping the box on the floor and guarding it like a wolf feeding on a kill while I sifted through it.

SnapOn combo wrenches :
_______OEX24 3/4" (no date code)
_______OEX20 5/8" (no date code)
_______OEX22 11/16" (1983)
_______OEX160 1/2" short (no date code)
_______OEXM10 10mm short (no date code)
_______OEI11 11/32" midget (no date code)

SnapOn 3/8dr deep sockets :
_______SFS181 9/16" (1983)
_______SFS141 7/16" (1983)
_______SFS121 3/8" (1983)
_______SFS101 5/16" (1983)
_______SFS081 1/4" (1983)

PLVMB #5419 1/2dr 19/32" socket
PROTO (USA) #5470 1/2dr universal joint
Harbor Freight welding magnet
Peterson/DeWitt ViseGrip pliers #6LN
unknown chinese pry-bar
Craftsman 1/4dr breaker bar (=V=)
Craftsman 1/2dr breaker bar (=V=)

All for only $10 :bounce:

Jake, condolences on your and your families loss. I'm glad he made it clear who would get the tools when the time came, as since you are the family "tool guy", you should have right of first refusal for those tools.

That you appreciate what he had is a good thing...

Here's today's finds but first I'm sorry for your loss Jake. Glad to see you found some items you never knew about.
Now on to my finds, I had answered an ad on CL about welding tools. It was a older lady and her daughters trying to sell off the late husbands tools from when he had a welding shop. There where quite a few nice pieces and lots of steel but this is what I came home with for a total of $265.

First a Jet,new in box, sander with some new sanding discs for $25, next was this Milwaukee Mag-drill which I don't know if it works yet, missing the chucks, for $200, then came the little craftsman lathe for $25, no pic yet, and finally a Rock Island no. 587 vise with 6" jaws for $20.

Overall a good day for a 2 hour round trip to Portsmouth,NH.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I was too young and too stupid to care about both of my grandfathers' tools when they passed. I'm afraid a lot of it was simply thrown away. It's great to see you keeping his legacy alive by keeping and using his tools...even the ones he was hiding from you. :)

Stopped at a sale today and picked up a nice lot for $20:

Craftsman 3.5" vise
I-beam anvil
6' pry bar
Craftsman pliers x2
Crescent wrench
Torch tip
Klein wire strippers
Lot of wood drill bits
Stannley 25" tape measure
Peg board hooks
Drywall / decking screws

Picked up this 36" metal brake for $60. Black bull brand, but pretty sure it's same exact as the harbor freight one. Still very heavy and sturdy, should do what I need it to do.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1449274328.971726.jpg

Also picked up this train horn that I'm very excited about..... For any of you train gurus... This is a Nathan Airchime K5LA. K is the series of horns, 5 is the number of bells, La stands for the type of mount it's on. Take a look on top of any Union Pacific train and this will be on the top of one.
I paid $400.

I have a Nathan airchime P5, on my truck currently. Great tone, just not as loud as this one. It was on the 60's-ish trains

A sale popped up on CL and I was 3 hours late to the show. The guy running it was selling the estate for his friend who recently died at 100 years old. He said it was mayhem when he first opened. I was so surprised to see good stuff still there. First off I asked about the vise, $20 done deal, axes $2 each, proto 20" adjustable $5. I knew the prices were beyond good and grabbed a bunch of stuff. Total for todays buys was $120. I should recoup that on the axes and proto.

Those axes are beauties in pristine condition! You'll regret giving them up!

Pretty slow here:

ONE yardsale and I went and looked at a 10 drawer lists thsi afternoon. I left it there. Condition was immaculate, size was almost perfect; 40 X 22 X 57 - but only 10 drawers so with that height, the shallowest drawer was 3" and some were 8-10" Not for me...:( If it had been a steal of a deal, maybe, but not at $1300... (Bad pics can be SO deceptive, or was it wishful thinking? :dunno: )

So thin pickings at this yard sale. a SO seat creeper for $2 - needs some love; an aluminum pan, 4 Momentary switches, a laser cut (bamboo?) fan for my youngest daughter and her collection of fans, and not shown some ornament things for SWMBO. $1.75

So I took NJMarty's advice and headed over to an estate sale about 30 minutes away from me. Basically a tool extravaganza. I can't begin to imagine the cool stuff they must have had the day before. Here is my main score for the day. I didn't get a chance to take pics of the other stuff, But I'll do that tomorrow.
Craftsman wall mounted tool cabinet with the all the tools in it, $75 total. Most of the tools in it are Craftsman, it should be fun filling it up with the correct tools. I think it may have still been there due to it being kind of hidden behind another door that was open, either way, I'm glad I was able to get it.

Pics of it as found with the tools in it, and empty once I got it home.

Nah, they mad me pay for it on my way out. I'd like to get a similar badge like the one on the inside for the door. I wonder why they omitted that. They actually had three similar cabinets, but they had pegboards on the inside, and weren't mechanic -specific.

Got a pair of Younstown Kitchen "Utility Cabinets" from the 50's from Craigslist today. Probably overpaid, but they're going to be great. Both in about the same shape. Currently planning to refinish one (the one with a small area of through rust) and leave the other as is.

Jake I'm willing to bet your Grandfather picked those up some time after you began your quest to collect the set knowing you would find them some day! I believe great tools are heirlooms ,passed from hand to hand ,stained with the memories of the loved ones that used them. Enjoy this time Jake and may it bring all the happy memories back of your time together with your grandfather.

I hit one garage sale and one auction today. Spent a total of 102.00 . I missed out on a few good items but I just wasn't willing to pay TOPdollar . I missed out on a 3/4 S/K set ratchet breaker and T bar with socket up to 2-1/4. I stopped at 150. Then I missed on a Craftsman 5197 vise, It was clean ... very clean . I just didn't want to pay over 200 on it. Also missed out on a Parker coffee grinder :(
I did manage to pick up a
Wizard sprayer
chrome tank Coleman lantern
NIB Dremel w/ 60 bits
A lil clamp on bench vise
Old brace... Don't know the maker of this one yet.
2 plumb dbl bit axe's
old cast iron base with a spinning seat. Needs new wood and repainted!
2 Thorsen ratchets 1/2
4 Craftsman ratchets-3- 1/2... 1- 3/8
1 S/K ratchet 3/8
1 Industro ratchet 1/2
Complete set of 1/2 & 1/4" =V= craftsman sockets & a mess of 3/8's

I hit one sale yesterday after lunch, only got one DBE Craftsman wrench for $1 but it filled a spot I was missing so it was well worth the stop.

This thread is pretty quiet for a Saturday. Everyone must be still unloading their finds...

EDIT: Ha! Everyone posted while I was typing. Great finds, gents!

Well, I once again found a sale on the way to something else I had to go to anyway. This one was actually better than the pictures:

http://www.estatesales.net/MA/Burlington/01803/1061496

I walked into the garage and the first thing I found was a gigantic Billings Vitalloy DBE wrench and knew it was going to be a good pick. Any of my fellow Boston area pickers may want to hit this one tomorrow. There were still a bunch of tools, electrical parts, welding supplies, a Heritage-logo Craftsman table saw, a pre-Block Craftsman grinder, a pile of big Ridgid pipe wrenches, etc.

I filled an old crown top Craftsman tool box with hand tools and a 5 gallon bucket with a bunch of longer tools and came upstairs to check out. The guy running the sale took his time going through both box and bucket and came up with "$150". Probably not a bad price, given my pile, but I only had $63 in my wallet. So, I made him an offer of all my cash for the tool box and hand tools. He said "That's a steal," but he took it. Unfortunately, the big Billings wrench was in the bucket pile I left behind.

I went to my function, but kept thinking about the big Billings. I collect DBEs, and that one was a beauty. After the event was over, I hit an ATM and went back. I found the wrench again (whew), and a few other items I had missed the first time, detailed below, for another $70.

Hey outlaw, would you consider reselling that SO creeper seat? That would be perfect to work on my lawn mower, I don't have any money now but I might be able to scrounge up some $$ after the holiday. Pm me.

Jake, sorry to hear of your loss. Some nice tools to treasure for sure. That's something about those Williams wrenches.

Haven't been keeping up lately.
Great hunting guys, love that Craftsman wall box!
Some cool posts there on war time tools Outlaw and Lugnutz.
