2016 Garage Sale Thread

This week is off to a better start. I usually check Craiglist before I head to lunch, and there was an ad that was simply titled "Tools", with a blurry picture of some heavy duty looking items. I made out a buffer on a nice stand, so I high tailed it over there. I was zeroed in on the stand and mostly ignored the buffer as it looked a bit rough and was three phase. After going round and round for a couple of minutes trying to only buy the stand, I ended up with the buffer (Baldor 409B, 1.5 HP 3ph), stand, and a frankenstand topped by a piece of RR track for $40.

A couple of hours later Nine texts me that there's another CraigsList ad with a guy getting rid of some high end things so I run back to the same part of town I was in for the other deal, and crab a nice Craftsman box with mostly Craftsman / USA made tools for $20.

Tonight the burning question was whether or not the buffer works. I've been hesitant to plug anything else into my VFD, especially things of an unknown origin...but I rolled the dice and it runs like a DREAM. I didn't have super high hopes about it but after taking a closer look at it, a fresh coat of paint is about all it needs cosmetically. I'll have to source hardware for it as well...hoping that won't be too bad.

Merc, is that your 2" belt grinder in the background?, what kind? I like that.

I got these tools at an estate sale for about $6. I paid fifty cents for the old Craftsman ratchet. The hacksaw blades are American. The wrenches except and extension are Craftsman as with the Drill bits.

That ratchet is the RHFT, so a great save. Does it also have the quick release button? (It should unless someone used a non-craftsman rebuild kit) it's a duel pawl ratchet, so 90 effective teeth.

You guys are killing it already in January. I'm visiting in Florida right now and sure beats being in the snow back home. Grabbed a few things at a flea market but no pics to share yet. Going out again tomorrow and hope to find some goodies!

Yes it has the quick release, a black button in the middle. I thought it odd because I'm used to seeing the pear head Craftsman Ratchets.

The RHFT's are my favorite ratchets you **** for getting it for 50 cents! Is it a 3/8" drive?

Picked up these 2 Mayline VariTask power adjustable worktables today for $50. I believe this model has the 250 pound electric lift screw actuator in it. They raise in height from 29" to 43" in height. The 32" x 60" tops weigh 70 pounds by themselves so that knocks a bit off of that 250 pound limit. Will probably keep one and sell one. Or build a bar with a section that raises up LOL.

Really old Indestro socket set. I had to look hard to find the logo inside the box. It's missing the square drive shank for the ratchet (among other things, I am sure). Paid $8.95

Nothing amazing like most of you have been posting but I picked up a Craftsman 1/2" drive and 3/8" drive ratchets. Both work and are in pretty good condition (don't think the 3/8" drive has the original insides though). Price paid.. $0! I actually found them in a scrap barrel!

Anybody happen to know who manufactured these? I don't see any manufacturer codes anywhere on them...

I think that series was made in China, but it could be Taiwan. Not sure.

Nice find! I saw a 1940's movie with a mechanic using that square drive shank with a ratchet you mentioned. Are the hard to find nowadays?

I hit an estate sale this morning and got a few keepers. I am very happy with the Iron City hammer. I saw it in one of the pictures posted and knew right away I wanted it and the price was right at $3. I talked the guy down to $40 on the Athol. All in all a good day.

I keep stumbling upon them even though the blacksmiths are LONG gone from this part of NJ. 2 of the auto body hammers are Williams and the dolly is Proto.

Other day when advertising on local radio show, got call from someone who had an "old sliding vise". Turned out when got there, to be an old woodworking vise, which was pretty rusty and not moving like it should.

Took it home and after wire wheeling it, found it to be a #3 E. H. Sheldon Woodworking Vise with a Patent Date of Aug 28, 1900 and found the Patent Number online of 656,793.

Jaws are 7 inches, with depth of jaw from bottom to top being 3 inches. Max opening of jaw is 8-1/2 inches. When fully closed, length is 16 inches long. Weight is around 25 pounds. Dog is on vise, but only way I could lock mine upright was by using a threaded bolt in the upper hole which was also threaded, to lock it in place.

When the handle is in the UP position, like you see in pic 1 , you can easily open up the jaws.

When the handle is in the DOWN position, like you see in pic 2 , the cam handle locks the upper/lower groove sections against each other to lock everything in place.

So, handle moves just a 1/4 of a turn only, to activate the quick or rapid release vise.

Came across something today that I really thought was pretty cool while I was going through some old toolboxes at work (was told to go through them and keep what we'll use and scrap all the rest). It's a Harley-Davidson 9 piece socket set! Missing the ratchet but all the other pieces are there.

Anybody else ever seen these before and if so, where can I get the ratchet to complete the set?

I seen one listed on craigslist for less then $20 complete. I am not sure but i think they came with all the Harley Davidson motorcycles sold so they are probably not that rare.

One sale this morning. The 2nd was a repeat from a few months ago, so I skipped it. The one I went to was mostly a basement sale, but OHHH, what a basement ! The owner of the house either owned an old hardware store, or bought one out. The shelving and cabinets looked like they came out of the early 20th century. The place was packed, with 24" isles between the piles. I was #26 in line, so the basement was crowded by the time I got down there. The garage was supposed to be opened, but the door was off it's track and they couldn't get in. I'm hoping it will be fixed by next weekend when they run the sale again.

Because I got in late, I have no idea what I missed, but all the tool/hardware guys had bulging bags when I came down the stairs. Despite all the mayhem, it was surprisingly civil. I kept waiting for a fight to break out, but tempers were under control and it was fairly jovial. Guys that I normally see elbowing little old ladies out of the way were actually sharing their flashlights and pointing out things to others down the line. Very odd.

Anyway, here's what I walked out with for $45.
(more than I wanted to pay, but the seller was swamped and I knew he was in no mood to dicker. I'll get him on the next sale. )

Those look like the same set up I have in a 5'x6' plotter table (has a sensor grid under glass that you can follow blue prints or any flat art with a cross hair sender to transfer the image to a computer. The top weighed 250 - 300 lbs so I made a motorcycle lift out of it. I have to lift the bike up with a hoist and set it down on the custom cradle I made for the top but once the 400lb bike is on there you can wheel it around and raise it to the 43" or what ever is comfortable.

I've thought of digging a hole in my asphalt floor and burying it at floor level to make a nifty bike lift too but I already have lifts that go that height.

I cleaned and repaired one of those and a Massey as well for a fellow tool collector. He wouldn't sell them to me but it was fun to work them over. I found the air tool oil works best over the long haul.

It's a 2x72 made by Pheer. Got a smoking deal on it a little while back. I originally just wanted the VFD but got lucky on the package deal. I only have the flat platen attachment but at some point I'll get some others. Really awesome, useful machine.

Had another score from the same guy earlier in the week, this time on a Powr Kraft box full to the brim and a belt sander. Misc. Snap On, Proto, Craftsman, and William wrenches, a near complete Craftsman 1/2" =V= ratchet and socket set, and a bunch of other misc for $25.

Looks like very slim pickins' this weekend, no planned stops at all. Stopped by one sale on the way to work and got a few pegboard hooks, a metal 3 in 1 oil can, five Craftsman =V= sockets, and some older Klein lineman's pliers for $1.50.

It is for making dowels used in woodworking. Hammer thru to groove the piece and then sharpen to point if need be.
