Are you sure the manufacturer is SAAD and not SAAB?

Not much of interest in the local sales in the tool realm, but I did pick up these vintage Wiss No. 20 heavy duty industrial shears--10.5 inches long. This is after I tuned them up. I failed to take a before picture, but they had heavy surface rust spotting and were hard to operate. Shiny, sharp and smooth as silk now.

Beware, they are not plastic worm proof. Finding a nice one like that is becoming a rairaty

As in the rubber worms eat the plastic trays? Or eat the aluminum?

Good catch! The older inlaid Wiss are really good scissors! I have quite a few pairs, not many dupes.

Yes. I have seen them before. I don't think it's the name of a corporate entity. But I forget what it stands for. Believe it or not, this is the first one I have found. EDIT: Got tired of trying to remember and looked it up. San Antonio Air Depot.

dkroth: Thanks for the help.

I hit up 4 estate sales today and yesterday - struck out at two, but came away with some worthwhile purchases at the others. I was disappointed that the 4" Erie vise is an exposed-screw, but it's still pretty beefy - tips the scales at 27 lbs. The Crafty, though bigger at 4 1/2", only weighs in at 22 lbs. At a glance, I figured it for offshore production, but it's Japan - made, not Chinese.
The Crowntop Craftsman Sabre (yes, that's how they spell it - pretentiously) saw is in really good condition works great, variable speed and all, includes the ripfence/circle cutter WITH the usually-missing center pin! Also the original manuals. The only thing that would make it better is if the case was Power Bronze. Black is so boring. Dropped $65 on the trio.

Didn't get in the picture, but the sabre saw also had the easily-lost tool tray that sits in the right side of the case!

The fleamarket is open and I have a Sunday morning and $20 in my pocket. My haul included what I guess is most of Mastercraft Maximum metric/SAE stubby combinations set. This was a bit of laugh, I had just ordered a Williams 7pc metric set Saturday night. In the Mastercraft set at least there was a 11mm. The $10 spent was worth that. I have a set of tools in the truck box, the last time I was using them I noticed for the larger combinations I had Mastercraft Maximum. I thought even cheaper would be good thing in a truck box. I found 7/8" Gray Maple Leaf, a 15/16" Mastercraft satin, 1" Gray Maple Leaf and a 1 1/4" Westward raised panel. Pocket change. In Canada, $1 and $2 are coins.

BFB, I have a couple of those saws, one fixed speed and the second is variable. They are good saws! IIR the variable can be "steered" with the knob.

You're talking about scroll /
autoscroll. I have a couple of them, use that feature. This doesn't have it. The knob is just a grip.

Hey all, seldom post here as I seldom find much of interest. However this weekend I think I did.
Have I managed to find my oldest tool? Regardless its a very nice tongs and will be put to use when I finally get a forge set up.

A Heller & Bros tongs, this site https://www.davistownmuseum.org/bioHellerBros.html implies they stopped using that variation of the name in 1899?
Also picked up a small half round former, we don't have many sales in this country and the ones we do have don't tend to have much in the way of quality tools, even less so blacksmith, this was only the second ever time I found a relevant tool. Also picked up the item in the last photo, but I really don't know what it is? Any thoughts?

Gidge,
Is that set-up just for the photo, or do you have a space where you display items with their patent documents? I like the effect.

It's just for the photo. If I had enough space, a set up with patents displayed for antique/vintage items would be great, kind of like a museum of old tools.

Picked this up the other day :

Nice tongs, LostBoy. If forging tools are that scarce, you may have to make your own!
The other object...I do not know. I suppose it is not really the head of a golf putter cut down for some other purpose, but that’s what it looks like to me (NO expertise in golf or putter-cutting). Is it bronze? Steel?

Steel, and appears to be hardened.
Yes I am sure I will be making tongs, but always nice to have one from the beginning rather than using vice grips etc. I seldom get garage time these days, so any project out there takes 'time'. Will be moving house end of this year/ next year so that should greatly simplify life and give me some actual spare time. Which will be nice!

Other day, spotted a listing on marketplace for a metal cabinet. Liked the graphics of the old cars on one of the two doors, but also could see a lot of rust. Picked it up and did some cleaning, without going too far.

On other door, says Automotive Tune Up Parts and bottom of same door, says Borg Warner.

I responded to a Craigslist ad for "Tons of Tools" the other day and grabbed a few items. He had a lot of stuff that he said was his grandfather's and the prices were right so I grabbed a few things.

Here is my haul from the weekend. 3rd weekend of someone cleaning out "dad's house", and he really disappointed me Sunday. Last weekend I got to see his Prentiss F-22 swivel jaw vise, first swiveler I'd ever seen in the wild, but I had to show him how it worked (thanks to you guys I knew). I was hoping to get a picture this weekend, but he'd moved it out. He was planning on keeping it

Anyway, on to the finds, starting top right.
Golden Rod oil can, just like dad used to have (brother and I decided we probably lost his 40 years ago)
48" Disston Phila one man crosscut w User made 2nd handle,
Coarse round stone hiding stamped ignition wrenches,
Boxes & tin of taps n bits, lock stuff, hex drive sockets,
Schlage hook wrenches (needed them the night before),
Marshall Wells and Cleancut chisels, L Bailey patent plane blade,
Misc fasteners, not brass, mostly wood screws, but some stainless machine screws and weird size machine
Vintage brass fasteners in the boxes behind the saw, mostly wood screws, in sizes from #2 x 3/8" up to #10 x 2-1/2"
18" Crescent wrench w 460mm marking black oxide?,
Clamp jaws to make corner adapters,
Grab box of sockets w/ Proto, Williams, Walden, Craftsman, Meteor and Japan stuff. Managed to fill a few missing holes from the box I got 2 weeks ago.

Well, maybe. Seems a little low to be strictly necessary and offset to the right.

16 Jan 20-9b.jpg

I hauled mine out this weekend and lined them up for a photo.

My fingernail slots line up fairly well.

Top - Bottom
Klein, Shrade, and 2 Camillus

Lugz....it's a tube bender made by KD. I've never seen one that's why I grabbed it. And yes you are correct the crown top metal box was from a pad sander. I didn't need it but I looked like a cool box and I also had something to put all the **** in that I bought. I threw it in as part of the deal.

Found a guy on Saturday that must buy out old Home Despot inventory. Offered him $15 for this lot and he agreed. I put the remote drains on each of my compressors today and they work great. I'll probably drain them more often now that I don't have to get on my knees to do it. The wife wanted the little corner shelf for holding a spare roll in the powder room, got that put up for her today as well.

Two unusual finds this past weekend. Both from Facebook Marketplace.

First, someone was offering new Chicago Pneumatic Sanders and Polishers for $10 each, which seemed a steal, but also offering to give two free if you bought six!

So for $40 I now have two CP7200S sanders and four CP7201P polishers.

Second was a small (8 inch) clock with a blurry picture, looked like it was Navy themed because of the Anchor, couldn't make out anything else.

Turns out it is a battery replica of a Russian ship clock, I like it for $5, and gave me an excuse to drive to the part of town where the Schlotzsky's is located for lunch.

This was in my fourth haul of the year (Lugz 2020_04, post #381) and soaking since then, which game me some time to do some research.

I'm not really an antique stove guy, but apparently Rathbone, Sard, & Co and their Acorn Stoves and Ranges were famous. They were located in Albany as early as the mid 1800's and by the turn of the century they had offices in Chicago and San Francisco and they were the largest maker of stoves and ranges on the planet. In 1887 they were melting 9 tons of iron a day, they made 750,000 units, raked in $1,500,000 and had 950 employees. An early puff piece in a trade rag made it sound like their stoves were on the Great Lakes or a railroad or going around the Horn at all times toward the Territories.

I'm not even sure what it is exactly. Some kind of handle for a grate or flue or ash basin or something. Square opening.

They're not rare, but it's neat to have found one. It will make a nice wall hanger. I may do something with some of the advertising I downloaded from eBay.

Still have to sort through drill bits, taps, literature and some measurement items.
