Logan, I learned A LOT of good lessons from polishing/paint correcting vehicles that were not cared for very well before my possession. I'm by no means a professional, or anywhere in the middle, but I've been able to fix things I never thought was possible.

I was pretty impressed with what I was able to get out of the father in laws truck...wanted to get more but just don't have the time. Both of those vehicles are supposed to leave my driveway this week which will be great to not have them in the way anymore...but I kinda wanted to keep them around a bit longer to practice on them. The wife's Volvo has plenty of light scratches in it so it'll serve well for scratch removal training. Going to need to get another light fixture or two over on that side of the garage though...I "overlit" the other side of the garage and need to chase away the darkness on the car side now

If you have not been there already: https://www.autogeek.net/
Some how-to vids available.

There are other detailing forums out there, but as with all forums, not everything is completely....accurate.

When I got the '87 Benz in 2007 I went absolutely off the deep end with detailing and paint correction. I have a collection of orbital polishers, pads and products to the extent that I will never have to buy another microfiber cloth or towel in my lifetime.

Beautiful Nova!

They look mean as hell with a low stance and wide wheels (pro touring) but different taste is what makes the hobby what it is!

Orange pad and perfecting cream is my absolute go to as well.

Far too nice outside the last couple of days...enjoying it now but worried when mother nature gets her revenge

Blowing out the sprinklers so stretched the hose out...plus an extra

Made a cheater plug of a double ended male to plug in the baby compressor to "help"20251115_113112.jpg

20251115_113114.jpg

Tried out Stoner Tarminator on tires and rubber gaskets, pretty impressed so far. This was on the wing window after just a couple minutes

Screenshot_20251115_162122_Photos.jpg

Picked up a cheap used hard rolltop cover for the work truck to keep snow out of the bed so I can keep more stuff in the back thru winter

It was cheap because seller had cross bars on it that he had to cut the rails for. I'll make some plastic filler plates and seal it up and it'll be functional enough.

It might get real...tools have come out

20251116_110018.jpg

Oh wait...it's just a screwdriver.

Both side mirrors are floppy and saggy...so coming off one by one, soaking to loosen the glue then will hopefully be able to tighten the spring on the ball

What you soaking the mirrors in? Guess I never thought about how those mirror is put together, so I guess mirror glued in the chrome frame and behind that mirror is a screw you need to tighten to get the ball to tighten up some?

Was out of acetone so had it in mineral spirits. Hit box store and picked up a few things including acetone but tossed a bit of heat on it with a heat gun to see if it would pop off.....got too aggressive

20251116_141806.jpg

Stress crack in the glass from expansion. Not sure the chemical was going to help, felt a bit like the glue was more of a silicone type.

Either way it's off. Here is the interior, bent metal piece acting as a tension/friction spring held in place with screws in this case. Some are rivets instead of screws, in this case it's easy as screws were backed out a couple turns. Removable locktite and put it back together

20251116_142133.jpg

Will get the other side done and new mirrors ordered

It's not for all occasions, but some adhesives respond to household ammonia...if you can deal with the strong odor. I would rank it a little below acetone for aggressive dissolving. 3M Adhesive Remover is good and is pretty paint-safe if you get sloppy. Comes in both liquid and spray can.

Whenever you get asked the silly question of what would you do if you could time travel, I always say take back a bunch of money and buy cars!
@Boostingaz, just on the basis of inflation, $3,700 in 1972 dollars is $28,750.24 in 2025 dollars. If you had put that $3,700 in a 5% savings account in 1972, it would be $49,117.31 today, potentially enough to buy a decent '72 Nova. The financial idiot side of me sold four shares of IBM stock to pay cash for a $3,200 1968 GTO. Those four shares would have grown to $316,000 in IBM stock today. The car genius side of me had the joy and memories from owning that car for 9 years = priceless.

Couple random updates of no real significance but feel the need to post something

Project time has slowed down, afraid that's going to be the norm for awhile....that time of year

Nova went to the storage unit, so progress on that will definitely slow down. It's close so I won't be afraid to bring it back if it's going to be nice and I have time to work on it, but won't be sneaking in 20 or 30 minutes of polishing it here and there

Speedway Motors "wish list" is getting longer....but first purchase getting ordered this weekend is going to be a bit spendy and less "fun" but will help support the desire for this to be a family ride:

Carseats and small humans work better with shoulder belts and there are currently none in the backseat, so putting the ratcheting type 3 point in the back and will probably go ahead and put the standard 3 point in for the fronts to remove the separate shoulder belts. Read some good things on their side mirrors so may go ahead and do those as well to help reduce blind spots on the passenger side....the wife rolled her eyes on dropping $1k on the car so quickly but when I said it's for new seat belts she didn't complain.

Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels for anyone hitting the roads, rails, airways or waterways!

Thanks for the invite, but the cold is keeping me inside today...and likely the weekend as the weather is about to get worse. Of course.

Have a great holiday and safe travels!!

Can't blame ya, we are headed back north this afternoon and will make sure to have all our grocery shopping done Friday morning so we don't have to go out later in the day or Saturday in case the storm forecast is accurate.

Well it is that time of year....

20251129_124236.jpg

Seems to be about the total snowfall. Enough for kids to get to go sledding, not so much I have to snowblow multiple times

In between being summoned into the house.... trying to find projects to use the spendy biscuit cutter

You keep that nonsense up there. We had rain most of the morning. Started at 39°, then slowly dropped all day. Nothing but flurries so far, no accumulation.

Stay warm!

Yeah the farm got rain, brother in Manhattan had accumulation but was gone by 3pm. It was cleared from the sidewalk pretty quickly with the snowblower so not a terrible snow

Logan, we had a little less out here, I have no sidewalks but a 25' x 75' drive to tend to, 47" snow blower for the garden tractor works wonders, it it was not in storage on top of a pallet rack, in an out building with no forklift access until after the snow gets cleared at work. 7P's got me this year

As probably guessed from above....we left the cold snowy Omaha for a warmer climate....another clue on where:

Wife and I only, kids stayed home with the inlaws. We both wanted somewhere warm, passports were expired so we ended up in Florida. 2 nights in downtown Miami with the hustle and bustle, then 2 nights in Hollywood Beach just up from Margaritaville. Would gladly come back to Hollywood Beach area with the kids....think this is now my 3rd trip to Miami, I've seen the main sites....no burning desire to come back unless it's to get on a cruise.

Only super relevant GJ type pic....

yachts.png

That's around 700 million dollars in those 2 yachts there....

The back one (Dragonfly) is per the internet/AI one of the newest superyachts out there and just arrived in the US last month. 466' long, 60' wide or something like that....the list of crazy features and ammenties is insane...but for around $500 million bucks it should be. Reportedly owned by a guy with a networth of $250 billion(Google cofounder), so it's not going to be hurting when they make a refueling stop. Those are tied off right downtown, the building on the right is the old American Airlines Center where the Miami Heat play and we could walk up next to them along the sidewalk so that was pretty cool to see

Typical sunrise beach pic from Hollywood Beach
sunrise.png

First time in this area, would come back. Super nice beach, good mix of more tourist to more local just by how far up/down the boardwalk you went. Super clean, lots of police presence, very obvious they're economy is based on tourists and making us enjoy and want to come back. Would have no problems coming back here and bringing the kids, they'd have a blast. Wasn't expecting the number of electric bikes that we saw....many of them modified for extended range and with saddle bags on the back and a large package shelf over the backtire and being used like some may use a Vespa or similar scooter....only ebike is legal on the boardwalk where scooters aren't.

In garage related news.....the Primeweld Black Friday sale got me and a new Primeweld MTS200 multiprocess welder and gas bottle are ready to be delievered on Monday. Will sell my current cheapo wire feed and add to the project list modifying my small fixture table to sling the welder under it. I didn't by the TIG torch setup for it....yet....that'll be after I get some projects completed (ha!) but it is on the list as I'd like to play with that as I have about 5 minutes of TIG experience.

Now time to go try and figure out how much of this warm weather I can pack into my suitcase to take back

Minor update for an additional/new planned update to the Nova.

While occupying myself while my wife was lost in a book on the beach....I've been falling down rabbit holes on several subjects including the Nova and updating lists of things I needed to inspect/check. One of which was subframe bushings/mounts. Then while scrolling thru pictures I realized I had a picture which showed one of the bushings....looks original as shown below:

Image

So that confirmed the need to update these....then it was onto with what? Solid, rubber, polyurethane or something else

After a lot of reading, I've ordered new subframe bushing and hardware from Energy Suspension. I was tempted to go with solid mounts, but at the end of the day this is a family cruiser and I want it as easy and enjoyable as possible to drive/ride and even though the incidents of increased NVH with solid mounts seems to be minimal it's not 0. Ordered red color...cause why not as it highlights to me what I've done

So add another item to the list of parts here/on the way that I need to install

If you get a chance and want a good, cheap burger with a Florida vibe, check out "Flanigans". It's a cool spot, there's quite a few of them in south Florida. Enjoy the sunshine state, we believe in law and order down here, you shouldn't have any issues.

We saw one on the way into Hollywood beach but didn't make it there. We are sitting in the plane at FLL to head home so saved it in the list for places on the next trip...thanks!

This should be fun...current status

Screenshot_20251205_145902_DuckDuckGo.jpg

6 minutes to go which I'm sure doesn't include taxi and connecting flight is scheduled to depart in exactly 20 minutes. Caught some headwinds and bad weather which slowed progress....I'm less stressed about it then when we had a super tight layover(and late departure) on the way out....so will see how it goes.

Not much I can do right now, there is another flight in 4.5 hours which would still put us home slightly faster then I could drive via a one way rental. Hopefully there are enough other folks on this flight all trying to make the same connection and they hold the plane....will know in 30 minutes or so!

New buzz box toy I mean tool showed up. Still waiting on the gas bottle

Might have to have a competition with @Boostingaz on who can get more use out of their new welder...pretty sure he will win

It might be a closer race than you think. I haven't even plugged mine in yet 🤣. Been too busy at the new job. I worked this morning even. I'm doing 52 hour weeks when I'm on Saturday rotating. 47.5 hrs is my standard week.

Dang...you guys short staffed or heavy on the construction side? I know your neck of the woods does a lot more tillage work thanks to your billion inches of rain a year....but its sometimes a struggle to get our parts guys to move right now as they've been sitting so long on the stool since the last customer they developed roots and become one with the stool

So new welder deserves a better home that is more conducive to easily use it

So plan is to make the cast and ground plate currently collecting misc stuff into a bit of a mobile welding cart with weld table above .....crudely mocked up below confirming it will fit like I hoped

20251206_163604.jpg

Lots of room to sling a plasma under there...the gas bottle I've got coming is an 80cf as I don't do a ton of welding so have to make a spot for it as well in this mess.

So drew something up to lessen the chances I cut something wrong

20251206_173532.jpg

Didn't have any fine tip sharpie markers but the Pica deep hole work the same

20251206_171556.jpg

Using the adjustable height table rolled to the middle of the garage as a cutting station

20251206_171428.jpg

And 2 cuts later by shear damn luck got me the 3 pieces I needed for the long sides and the drop works for the front edge without having to cut. Wish that luck would've been used to pick a winning lottery ticket but take what I can get

20251206_173319.jpg

Need to cut the back piece, then lay it up to get it ready to weld. The long side adjacent to the legs will just get welded to the legs, inboard side will get supported by something threaded into some holes in the bottom side of the weld table top.

All my metalworking tools are mobile, but the electrical here is not ideal. Need to address that issue soon, just have more important projects ATM. If I really need to do something I can it just means moving a lot of stuff, and dragging the extension cords out. I don't like that.

Thanks for joining in! Few electric improvements are moving up the list for me. Between car stuff and maybe more metal fab, I need more lights so I'm not working in shadows or with spotlights as much.

I'm also going to need a new 240v plug for the welder, it's got the adapter to work off 120v but I've got the electric panel in the garage so don't intend to cripple it like that. I'll have to run a new piece of 3/4" EMT to put the outlet in, but other then having too much stuff in the way it shouldn't be too bad.

Other option is to just drop the new outlet directly off the electric panel then order a 25' long 50 amp rated extension cord(or make my own) and just plug in the extension cord for it. I've got a 10 gauge/30 amp rated cord with the wrong ends that is long enough....but looks like for a bit more than the price of the new ends for it I can have a complete, 50 amp factory made set.

The more I think about it....the more I'm leaning towards just ordering the extension cord and being done with it

Not particularly it's just the sheer volume. We have 14 techs, 5 transport drivers and 8 admin staff just in our "shop". There are two other fully equipped shops on site as well. We are full service. We will work on pretty much anything that comes through the door (and/or we send a road tech to work out on site), so Deere, Kabota, Mahindra, etc, there are only a few brands we won't touch just due to our availability to receive parts quickly or lack of brand support. We also go all the way down through lawn and garden so all your compact, gators, SxS, zero turns, lawn tractors, snow blowers, push mower. Literally almost any brand, any machine. We also service the brands we sell, so Boss snow blade installs, installs/repairs/maintenance on really any blade, SnowEx salt spreaders up to the large Isuzu flat bed mounted models, front end loaders that get push boxes, etc. It's just volume.......

Ahhh that makes sense then....lots to learn and lots to keep you busy! Unfortunately it means you probably have a different mild to significantly crappy parts lookup system to learn for each brand too?

I have 220 in the garage it's just on the wrong side. Right now it powers my overkill air comp which I don't use all that much these days. That's gonna get moved out back, and the 220 line will be moved to the opposite wall. Sub panel, plumbing yada yada. It'l l happen eventually just working my way through the to-do list. The PO left a lot of messes to clean up.
