I like the progress, moving along at least.

My wife got the stupid idea of a new build in her mind, so it seems my house and garage will be partitioned off and rented out as flats, and I build myself a new place in the backyard.

I like the idea of renting a place out on your propperty.

1) It is some easy income for a special project. One should not factor it in to your normal budget.

2) I like the extra security of another breath on the propperty.

3) Usually also changes the routine of people coming and going.

4) Someceasy extra hands if you need to move something.

5) A lot easier to maintain as it is right there than maintaining a place that is on the other side of town.

I have a few cousins in my hometown and we can all live together.

Family............I bo not like to do business with family. I am a softy and usually comes off second best.

Can you chuck them out if they stop paying...for some good reason.

Just back ftom a 46km cycle ride. Sunday morning 7:30 here by us and my builders buisy mixing concrete to go into the cavities.
They finished plastering everything yesterday. Just hope they do not get the walls too dirty pouring the concrete into the cavities. It is a pretty wet mix to be able to get all the way down.

Getting them to mix on shutterply on the floor su we do not get a motar build up.

Why did you plaster before filling the cavities? What happens if the walls kick out and mess up all that nice plaster?

Its ******* down here in the lowveld, had my eye on site inspection behind me to get a idea of the plans when we want to start the new build.

I asked the same question, but was informed that they know their job.

Easy to see now if the wall kicks out.

I was also worried about the mess against the walls. I remembered what it looked like when theydid the first 1.5m

Wow, interesting way to build... Love the brick work I geT what you say about not seeing well as you get older, but it would have been cool to maybe keep one brick as an accent wall. It looks like they dont strike their joints, is it just for a looks or is it just something you all dont do?

I wish I could have used one lintol right through. But alas no such luck.

You at a very exciting stage now. Almost time for the ribblock to go up. Why only one such a small window? For more wall space?

The plan is a 2 post hoist inside and to be able to work comfortably when a car is on the hoist.

Might even leave the lotus on the hoist with another car parked under it.

Nice day, but windy. Did 57km this morning. Nice ride saw 3 groups of monkeys on the rout over Maitlands.

Tried to find some slab boxes yesterday, but all the suppliers closed. I need them because I want to fit some downlights in the garage door openings. So started scratching around in the garage to improvise.

Got some 80mm pvc downpipe. The little downlight fixtures fitted perfectly. Then Ihad to close off the backs and drill holes for the 20mm pvc electrical pipes.

Ribs going up.

8 guys are sweating to lift one of them. There are 16 of them.

Step 1. Get them frpm the storage area.

Step2. Up to scaffolding height.

Step 3. Up to wall height.

Step 4. Now the other side up to wall height.

Step 5. Do it all 15 more times.

Man these pictures tell a story about the difference in labour costs around the world.

A build like this in NZ you wouldn't see any more than two guys most of the rime and you would get laughed at if you suggested erecting the Ribs in the manor you have (to be fair Health & Safety would not allow it).

All of the ribs on top.

This is just temp storage. They must now be spaced so the blocks fit in between.

That is Fridays job. They are taking a break on the 1st and 2nd. That is if we can get more propps to support the ribs. On their own now they can hardly support their own weight.

Builders back at it. Already 28deg C.

Building the interior walls so Ican get the boxes for the light switches in. Pipes need to go into the slab upstairs.

Quickly went to help Fred lift the back section onto his Loto T70 Spyder.

Everything fitted into place. This was the first time all the bits was put into place on the chassis.

This is very impressive considdering this is a scratch build.

Taken him close on 8 years to get to this stage. Started by digitising a 1:32 (iI think) model car. Everything made in that garage.

Interesting build in your area. I am familiar with techniques here in USA, but other areas have different codes to follow. Will follow these one through completion

Good luck on your project. I like to see you getting your mileage on your bike. That would be a bicycle right? I know I saw a motorcycle and bicycle in your other garage. Gotta stay healthy to enjoy your new shop.

Thanks, yes it is a bicycle. Did 40km on my mountain bike this morning, but had to get off the track as it was hitting 35.5 deg C That is 96 deg F.

Builders off today. The boss boy had to attend a funeral. I am actually glad they are taking a break and not in the sun in these temperatures.

I provide them with a 5 liter bottle with frozen water, that last them about the day if they keep filling it with tap water the whole time. Our tap water is very clean and drinkable here in Port Elizabeth.

Although the builders were not here, the "electrician" had to chase the pipes and the 2 x 4s for the 2 light switches into the walls. These could not run in the cavity as they are both single walls. 110mm thick.

One will have 3 switches in. This one is in the toilet itself. One for the toilet, one for the entrance and one for the outside lights.

The other, the one in the picture will also have 3 switches. One for each of the garage bays.

Nice overcast day and the wind a stiff breez. Builders here and very glad the weather is playing game.

Today they are packing the ribs at their specified spacing and placing 3 propps under every rib. This is to support the floor till the concrete is dry.

When I saw the blocks originally, I thought block walls as that's how they are used here in the US. Once they hoisted the ribs up, I understood that part but blocks some what confused me.

Builders left relatively early. Because it started to rain, but not before they had the blocks all up.

Correct. I see some 20mm stuff was delivered with the Rib and Block.

There are some special blocks that needs to be placed where I want the lights.

These are not in place yet.

I am back at work from tomorrow so updates will be limitted to what I see once I get home.

Exciting times, progress is happening at least. My main issue with ribblock is that the cavity in the block stays empty, and that might create some issues with heat and whatever. But that's just me.
